Your Lions Squad Following the 6N

Interesting squads from some of the Celts on here. Perhaps it is worth pointing out England are the highest ranked Lions nation with the best record vrs SH juggernauts in recent times. All with inferior players eh?

Chip on the shoulder?

Dull, can't say I've seen it with Tips, Wood takes a lot of ball... to fall back on my old friend, statistics, Tipuric took 5 of his own ball this 6N, Wood took 12 of his own and 1 of the opposition's - and really, that's off one less game as the moment Croft was back he became primary back-row jumper. And, uhm, apparently Tipuric has taken none of his own ball for the Ospreys in the HEC, where Wood's taken 28 of his own and 2 oppo's... ok, that might be inaccurate...

edit: Well espn appears to agree with the Telegraph...

England may be the best but rankings aren't a real marker as Wales were nowhere before 6N after a really poor AI's and well England got alot of points for beating an All Blacks team that hadn't an ounce of physical strength from a long season and a virus.

Fair enough Peat. I just can't decide who to leave out for Wood, or should Gatland just make space for him, that's what I'd do personally. What's one more player?

Well, since there's 37 travelling, and 35 in TommyV's squad, I think I can work out where we make the space...

If there wasn't the space, I'd have left out Robshaw for him.

And if Croft puts in a really good 80 against whoever Leicester have in their quarter, I still might leave out Robshaw...

No, I'm not fishing. Well. Not much. 90pc serious.

I am not saying England are the best Lions nation, but Lions teams without a single English player are a bit ridiculous. Thanks for explaining why we beat NZ too :)

Stats are only half the picture.
Tipuric is excellent, a nuisance all over. He and Warburton will have a great rivarly for years. Warburton was actually blindside for Tipuric in the U20's, I think.

Turnbull was blindside, Warburton played at 8.

Easy decision. Robshaw.

The media hype him up to be so much a better player and get much more credit than Tom Wood simply because Robshaw is captain, and because the media have hyped him up many just automatically select him above Wood for that reason. Wood in my opinion is better, more dynamic, wins lineout and doesn't compare badly to Robshaw at much at all to be honest. Wood was one of the star players in that New Zealand win and man of the match IIRC.

Robshaw is a good player, but with very high competition in the back row, he shouldn't be the dead certain tourist people talk of him as. After getting thoroughly outplayed against Wales, he needs to outplay Saracens' Kelly Brown to fight for a place in the dirt trackers squad in my opinion. Wood would be a good option as well perhaps.

Dan Franks was the openside my research seems to suggest.
Turnbull apparently played a bit at SR, with Tipuric occasionally at blindside.
2008 this is.

Who the f**k is Dan Franks? Remember Turnbull playing at second row as well now you mention it. I can name the entire backline, apart from the left wing I think (Halfpenny played on the right).

Yeah TommyV I think that's a great squad - except I'd have Hines over Evans, and maybe Ross out because he's pretty useless and average in the scrum.

Well at international, when was the last time he actually dominated a scrum? He doesn't do much elsewhere either.

Not dominating doesn't mean you're average. And we did absolutely smash the Welsh in a few scrums. (Duck no need to post your gif we've all seen it.) Also won a penalty against Italy with a nice bit of jackling. He does a lot of grunt work in fairness to him. Also seems to be used often enough for the really really slow ball.

I agree I'm just saying the ranking aren't great indication. I'm not saying England are poor either or accusing you of saying they the best.
Interesting in that article link that it was Englands worst ever 6 nations in terms of try scoring yet they got to last hurdle looking for Grand Slam

Well ok fair enough maybe not average, but not really Lions standard.

Didn't realise that, my bad. Cheers for pointing that out.

I'd take Wood too then in the back-row who was unlucky to mix out on the original 6 I had, and probably an extra centre option, maybe both Scott and Marshall at 12 along with Roberts.

That or another second-rower, perhaps O'Connell if he's fit.
