The Next Lions Squad

But the other half could be coming into their prime.

Its fun to look at the list of current Lions who are young enough to tour again as there are quite a few of em in their early twenties. I'd expect a lot more new talent to come through, and some of the younger players to miss out on this tour (Evans brothers) to step up again.

Well Max Evan's is gonna be nearly 30 at the start of the next tour so I'd hardley count him as one of the younguns...

BOD is 30 now. I don't see that as a problem.

Oh, that's not what I was getting at its just that many people consider him in the group of players who're young guns around for 2 (or even 3 for some forwards) more tours to come, Like Fitzgerald, Halfpenny or Croft when in fact he's a bit older than most people think.

Not saying he's too old just not as young as people sometimes suggest.

Four years ago Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald were yet to make their Leinster debuts while Jamie Heaslip only had one or two appearances (off the bench if I remember correctly). Who would have thought back in 2005 that these guys would be Lions test starters? Likewise who would have predicted that Leigh Halfpenny or Keith Earls would be selected to travel, or at the other end of the scale Simon Shaw and John Hayes? If I were to pick a squad of 37 players now who I think will make it in 2013, chances are I'd get my selection completely wrong.

That said, I'll give it a go. Forgive my parochialism but since I'm far more familiar with Irish rugby that that of Wales, Scotland or England, I'll restrict my options to some Irish guys who could make it.

In the back three Rob Kearney, Keith Earls, Tommy Bowe and Luke Fitzgerald are young enough to tour again. Felix Jones and Andrew Conway are talented enough to make an impression in 4 years time.

In the centre chances are that O'Driscoll and D'arcy will be gone. Darren Cave and Fergus McFadden are very talented but perhaps not talented enough to tour. In my opinion the best centre options from Ireland are two players who have just finished in school this year, Brendan Macken from Leinster and Michael Allen from Ulster. 2013 may be too early for both to tour though. Nevin Spence looks a very good player.

At outhalf, I hold out very high hopes for a guy called Ian McKinley but doubt he'll get the call. He's a very smart player who can also play in the centre. Ulster have a couple of very promising 10s in Luke Marshall and James McKinney. Andrew Burke from Munster looks a decent player too. I've a lot of time for Jonathan Sexton but he lacks consistency.

Tomas O'Leary could make it in 2013 but I feel he only made it into the 2009 squad due to the lack of class at 9 in the British Isles. I'm unsure if there's another Irish option good enough to get past Danny Care, Mike Phillips, Dwayne Peel (sp?) and Chris Cusiter among others. Paul O'Donohoe and Peter Du Toit may be the pick of the bunch.

Of the props, it's hard to look past the manchild Cian Healy. Nobody else stands out. Maybe John Hayes since he'll never retire.

Rory Best could make it at hooker. Sean Cronin too if he becomes a more consistent lineout thrower.

In the second row, Paul O'Connell may again tour. There are some good 2nd rows coming through but nobody else really stands out. Brian Hayes from Munster may have an outside chance.

In the backrow, Heaslip and Ferris will again tour. David Pollock and Sean O'Brien also have a chance. Peter O'Mahony could be a special talent.

Basically I'm naming every available Irish player ensuring I'll be right with some. Throw enough **** and some of it'll stick!

I doubt it. He's about 32 now, isn't he?

Alun Wyn Jones is likely, and possibly even a captain.

My wild guess? Jason Tuvey (The young Dragons full-back) is going to be the test 15.

No hes 29 at the moment and will probably be there in 4 years time.

A full-back you say? Well he'll have to push Lee Byrne(29 also) out of the Welsh set up first and get past Rob "Jesus" Kearney which are both big asks.

From what I've seen of him, he's a better Fullback, and if he takes his chances, he could certainly overtake Lee Byrne in years to come. Biggar's a better FH than him, but I see nowt that are better young FBs. Evans and Owen taken into account, as well.

I think Tovey has huge potential, whether it be at outside half or fullback remains to be seen. I hope he doesn't just get chucked in at fullback because the Dragons don't have anyone else to play there, think that's what happened last season! The few opportunities he had at fly half, he looked a much better player than both Connor and Allridge. From what I've seen, he's got genuine vision, the kind that can't be taught, he does the right things at the right time and oozes both confidence and class. It's amazing to think he's still 19! (or has he turned 20 now?) He would have been capped in North America for Wales if it weren't for the Dragons HC play-off.

Some of this applies to Gareth Owen at the O's as well. I think he has all the tools to become a top class centre or outside half, pace, power, vision and confidence (hell of a hand-off too!). But because the Ospreys have no cover at fullback, yet have both Hook and Biggar at 10 and a few options at centre too, he get's shoved to fullback. Maybe we'll see him tried at outside centre this season?

Wales have basically got 3 potential top class outside halves coming through at the same time, Biggar, Gareth Owen and Tovey. With Wales U20, Biggar was singled out as the best at that time, therefore Tovey was shoved to fullback and Owen into the centre in order to get them all onto the pitch at the same time. But that situation needs to be re looked at. Biggar is obviously an out and out 10, but the other two have more varied skills. My preference would be to develop both Biggar and Tovey as outside halves and bring Owen through as a centre, outisde centre if poss, to partner Roberts.

Warberton will be on the next tour, would be surprised if he wasn't a starter.

Saying guys will definetely be on the next tour is daft, i mean Shane Williams was the IRB player of the year last year yet was lucky to get into the squad less than a year later.
