Squad Selections

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE ([email protected] @ Jan 13 2009, 10:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div>
So who do you think will be the youngest and oldest player in the lions starting 15?[/b]

They could both be Welsh if Martyn Williams and Lee Halfpenny get into the team. Neither are atall certain of ther places though, Martyn Williams looks odds on, but there are a couple ahead of Halpenny at the mo (due to experience mainly).

Sky's effort this week includes the Dragons' Richard Fussell. Why do they bother publishing it?

Did you not read my last post.We lost by more in the 2nd test. So Woodwards original selection was proved to be the right one. Jesus its like trying to educate pork!!!!![/b]

Mainly down to the fact the second test was bone dry whilst the first was played in very heavy rain. In the first test the Lions defended for the whole match, atleast they got a couple of tries in the second B)

Agreed, they should just leave it to the start of the six nations. God help us if England do well in it with Stuart Barnes calling the shots.

I think these are the certain starters at the moment. Six Nations will fill in the blanks.

6 months ago I would have said that Byrne was a certain starter....but unfortunatly some ******* has to not pick Kearney?

He's focking awesome. Seriously looking forward to Byrne vs Kearney in the 6N.

I agree, but I can see Irish people getting ****** off at this coaching team (unless they win of course ;) ) I can see all the close selection decisions going the Welsh way.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines.

At least Rob will be around for at least another 2 lions tours.

tbh kearney's done no more than delon armitage to look good... ie. do the basics well plus a few flashy things.

on the other hand, byrne looks incredible and should be a shoe in unless something goes seriously wrong.

What's there to do besides the basics incredibly well (only missed one catch that I remember and that's because one of his teammates ran into him) and many flashy things?

Byrne 15, Kearney 14, yes?!!

Oh and you sods should get used to these 3 words....

Henson at twelve.
:p :p

My guess at the test team is:
Sheridan
Flannery
Murray
Hynes
O`Connell
Croft
wallace
Powell
Blair
Cipriani
Williams
henson
BOD
Kearney
Byrne

I appreciate Cipriani has been on poor form but hes showing signs of recovery and once he gets his swagger back he is by far the most talented 10 available. Powell is one who will either come back a star or a complete disaster, knowing him.The key in my view is to pick a savvy team who can disrupt the Boks and catch them cold with something different. Thats where Geech`s experience can be the difference?

As far as I'm concerned... pre- 6N, these positions are concrete, barring major incident:

1.
2.
3. Murray
4.
5. O'Connell
6.
7.
8.
9. Blair
10.
11. Williams
12.
13.
14.
15. Byrne

really and truly, no one else has really put their name down and said 'you wouldn't dream of not picking me'.

For the other prop berth, it has to be between Sheridan and Jenkins, but AS certainly hasn't done much lately so Jenkins is in pole, but it's far from decided.

Any one of 6-8 hookers could play, none are outstanding.

The other lock would be difficult too because there's Wyn-Jones, O'Callaghan and Hines all playing very well atm.

Back row has Powell, Williams and Wallace at the forefront, but there are plenty of other players from all four nations who could do the job nicely; it's not an area the British Isles is short in.

10 is a big problem, because you can go for solid and boring Jones or flashy and chokey O'Gara. There's no one in Scotland, and Hook/ Cipriani are both massive liabilities.

The centres, on ability, would be Henson and BOD. But Henson hasn't done anything for a year, and needs to prove himself this 6N. I keep saying this, BOD looks slow and past it atm, so 13 is wide open... Henson should play 12 if he's fit.

THe other wing could be one of about 10 players... none of whom are shoe-ins for their own international teams... there's Halfpenny, Kearney, Fitzgerald, Earls, Evans, Lamont(s), Sackey and several other English wingers who are all definitely excellent players, all exciting, but all flawed, even if that flaw is only inexperience.

For all these positions, we'll have to see from the 6N who should fill them.

I agree with the majority of that GG, but O'Gara flashy?! :p

Regarding the problem position of 13, if it occurs as the partnership in the 6 Nations I can see the coaching team going with Henson at 12 with Jamie Roberts outside him. Gatland showed last year v England that if he's in doubt he'll go with groups of people who are familiar with each other - 13 Ospreys. So if no outstanding candidate presents himself during the tournament we could well see that. I'm not saying Gatland would have the final decision on selection, but he will certainly hold a very large influence.
Would people have a problem with that partnership?

I think Roberts is playing better thanHenson at the moment anyway so I wouldn't really mind that.
This would all be far easier if Henson wasn't such a cock.

I wouldn't have a problem with Henson/ Roberts. Speaking of Welsh centres, I've seen flashes of Andrew Bishop and been impressed, any chance of him getting a starting berth this spring?

A few months ago, I'd say he was barely regional level, but he's really impressed me over the last couple of months. He's strong defensively, been making breaks with ease, but his distibution can be **** poor. How many of the breaks he's made can anyone remember being converted into tries?

He's basically a less gifted (in every departmant) than Henson. He's just far less of a c*ck, which brings things a bit closer lol.

I can also easily see Roberts playing himself into either 12 or 13 shirt for the Lions, he's an absolute powerhouse with some very silky skills to go with (his offloading out of the tackle is top notch and anyone remember his winning try (or atleast his break t0 set up the try) v Bath last season where he skinned half a team from his own try line in the pooring rain?)
