[2014 Super Rugby] New Zealand conference

The tell tale sign of a great team is their bench. Last season you would look at the Chiefs bench and think they would get in or around the starting 15 of any Super team. Looks like that will be the same this year. Just such a well rounded squad.

Other news was Luke Braid named as captain, which I was pleased to hear. The man is relentless for 80 minutes and sets the tone.

Also articles from Benji hinting that he doesn't fancy first five, saying "I sort of want to have a bit of space and take the line on, and recapture what I think my strength is, which is running,". Sounds like he's gunning for full back, which fits in with what I think most people would assume is the best backline combo.

Obviously with most of the signings being announced already there aren't as many surprises.

Ripia has gone to the Highlanders, and they've also picked up Malakai Fekitoa.

The Crusaders have signed Nemani Nadolo from Japan, a big winger, to replace Tom Marshall. Likewise they've given a contract to young halfback Mitchell Drummond, which is a good long term signing.

Lol, a big winger. 6'5'' and 130kgs is quite big isn't it.

Can't believe no one has yet picked up West.

I'm from the Manawatu, hence why I point this out:

Look how many of our boys are in the Canes..... ZIP (excluding the wider training squads)

Now look at the list of guys signed by other franchises:
Cruden, Tikoirotuma, Crosswell, and Fitzgerald (Chiefs)
A Smith, Fia, and Emery (Highlanders)
and then arguably the Whitelocks who all hail from the Manawatu as well.

To me this just epitomises the Hurricanes downfall - simply do not retain their own players (and this is just the Manawatu lads)!!

On the other hand you have the Crusaders who actively sign up all their young talent with a very well thought out and targeted strategy aimed at keeping their young fullahs from leaving the area. It was interesting listening to the radio the other day when they were discussing how the Crusaders (and Canterbury) do it. Apparently they have pages and pages of examples of players who stayed on with Canterbury and the Crusaders, turning down multiple offers from other teams when they were young, and despite often not getting much or any game time in their early years, all went on to be All Blacks. They basically show these kids evidence of a pathway they have within the Crusaders environment that will get them an AB jersey! Bird is a very good recent example, already an AB and bugger all Super Rugby experience. I reckon if he'd taken off to any other team he wouldn't be going on the AB tour!

I'm pretty sure around a third of NZ Super Rugby players hail from the Hurricanes region now.

EDIT: 52 players in the core squads above first made the step up to Super Rugby whilst attached to Hurricanes provinces. I haven't counted how many players there are in total, but the number should lie between 150 and 160. So yeah, roughly one third. The first choice All Blacks team is basically a Canterbury forward pack and a Hurricanes back line, with a few extras mixed in.

Yeah, there is no doubt the Hurricanes are terribly managed in terms of retaining local talent. I was at the stadium to see Robbie Fruean's first match of Super Rugby - as a fullback replacement in the last few minutes - he immediately looked promising and I turned to my mate and said 'I bet we'll lose him'. Sure enough signed with the Saders shortly after.

This squad does include more Hawkes Bay players than usual though...

They do have a massive bias towards Wellington players over the other provinces, which isn't always backed by ITM cup form. E.g. what in gods name has Adam Hill done to get a wider training group spot? Wouldn't have had a sniff if he was at a different province.

I agree he's hardly an exciting outside back, although what outside back would you pick over him that aren't commited to 7's?

Number of Super Rugby players by province:

1 CAN (31)
2 WEL (26)
3 AUC (20)
4= OTA (11)
4= TAR (11)
6 CMA (9)
7 BOP (8)
8= TAS (7)
8= NHA (7)
10= WAI (6)
10= HWB (6)
10= MAN (6)
13 SOU (5)
14 NOR (0)

No not Joe Hill, Adam Hill the flanker.

Oh crap - I just assumed it was Joe Hill. Adam Hill is very average I agree. Not sure who in the Canes region I'd replace him with though that doesn't have a contract.

Callum Gibbins and Blade Thomson are there - while I guess Mike Coman may be a bit unlucky.

They need another open side flanker, given that the only two they have are Lam and Savea. I'm not saying that Hill is the ideal candidate (he's also from Otago, originally), but there aren't a huge number of open sides available around the country.

Pity we couldn't hold onto Lowe for another season.

While I agree the Canes needed an openside in their wtg, I don't think they needed 2! Gibbins is a specialist openside too, and is a far better player than Hill (who got little game time for Wellington this season, and only occasionally made the bench for Otago last year).

Oh right, wasn't aware Gibbins was an openside too! Definitely seems a bit strange then. The thing is, it's not like Hammett is even a Wellington man, so why would he favour them?

Personally I don't think the selection of Adan Hill is a case of "Wellington bias" - I just think he is just a poor selection.....

Pretty disappointed in the Highlanders squad. I can't figure out how Joseph and co. think we are going to last a season with only 4 outside backs....

The Highlanders did get a stealer in Willie Ripia ;)

Good squad. Pleased with the signings made. However I am converned with the lack of front row and fly-half depth and general talent. A couple of front row injuries and things will be looking pretty grim while I'm still eternaly confused over why we let Anscome go.

I guess my main worry is, when compared to say the Chiefs squad, there is an fairly equal first choice fifteen but nowhere near enough quality in depth. The Chiefs look like they could almost put out two 'first choice' standard teams and there is a done of competiton for places, not so much here. I think the play-offs are a fairly realistic goal, with a bit of luck, but nothing more.

Ripia to start 10 or Sopoaga? I'd start Sopoaga at the start of the season and give him a try.
