Australia vs England (3rd Test) - 16/07/22

Really don't understand JVP being benched. He played a blinder last weekend and well and truly earned another decent go. I don't buy all the BS about pressure. Surely we want to see how the young talent performs when there's something on the line? Frankly last week was a must win and he did just fine, so just don't get that decision.
Also agree that the Marchant thing is strange?

Other then that things seem fine. Both teams hit by injuries and playing with scratch teams, so it's a wonderfully balanced final game. Not sure why, but feel like we have this one. Based on nothing really, just gut feeling.

Had a look on twitter to see if a Journo has asked the question but can't see anyone - closest is Maggie Alphonse saying he should be in the 23, so if he is injured it's not common knowledge enough that she's come across it
All very bizarre. Hard to believe it's a straight selection issue. In the nicest possible way I hope it is some kind of minor injury. But the complete radio silence is very odd.

JVP is blatant JGP appropriation, right to the point he didn't start for his club when called up. I'm also going to add some JVdF appropriation in there because he's South African.

Read somewhere (might have been Torygraph?) that EJ's benching JVP is because of the referee and his interpretations of the breakdown leading to quicker ball therefore the fast paced game suits Care more.

If true then I'd have to wonder why Jones does not pick "Mr. Zip zip" or whatever he called Randall as he's the highest tempo of the bunch... but likelihood is that it's because EJ does not want to lose and goes with experience regardless.

I reckon it has something to do with trying to get a something out of Marcus Smith on this tour by giving some familiarity with his club mate.

Win, and Edddie can say its been a successful tour. Some young players got some caps and had to dig into our depth due to injuries.

Loose and it feels like back to square one, minus a few steps.

I read the same quote on RugbyPass I think. It was linked to this ref having a very strict interpretation on tacklers rolling away (which sounds more of a worry than an opportunity for us TBH). He seems to think that favours Care's style of play.

I'm more bothered about Marchant's bizarre exclusion though. Porter is more physical but inferior in all other respects and Marchant has been playing very well for England. He deserves a lot better, but this is what we're dealing with I guess …

I totally agree, especially Marchant. Even if you aren't going to start him (which you are, because there isn't a better 13 currently involved with the training squad) to not have him in the 23 is so very... Eddie.

Maybe in 2024 with a non-lunatic head coach and a qualified attack coach we'll see:

9. JVP
10. Smith
11. Freeman
12. Porter
13. Marchant
14. Arundell
15. Steward

That's a nice thought. Maybe a bit lightweight.

Porter isn't the answer at 12 and I doubt he ever will be. I'd much prefer Kelly or Ojomoh.

Long term, there are high hopes for Ollie Hartley at Wasps.

Ok what games has Ollie Hartley played in out of interest?

Brief research shows 2 prem cup games and some championship games.

Doesn't really scream long term high hopes just yet.

Hence why I said 'long term'.

I've never seen him play with my own eyes, but by all accounts he's a 6'4" 12 who Is looking very good at age grade level and is expected to feature for Wasps next season.

Wasps' forum is very positive about him, with a (perhaps overly hopeful) view of him helping to fill Gopperth's boots one day. One to keep an eye on for sure.

Apparently this game will take Steward over the 30 'match equivalent' threshold. That's the agreed amount of playing time, but is guidance not enforceable rule.

Also reading that only 2 of England's Lions took the full 10 week break after the SA tour.

Already over it I think.

If he plays more than 60 minutes that takes him over 2500 minutes of rugby this season.

What's the 30 match equivalent threshold? Does it mean they need extra time off?
