anthems used in six nations

When I was a kid thought that 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' was the RFU's anthem:

Swing loooooooooooooooooow, sweet chaaaaariooooot!
Coming for to carry me hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooome!
Swing loooooooooooooooooow, sweet chaaaaariooooot!
Coming for to carry me hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooome!

when Sean Connery says it, he says "God shave the queen". It's not even rude, he can't help it.

Well I like GSTQ. in contrast to South Africa's national anthem, the players at least will stay warmed up when singing GSTQ.

It's short, to the point and is something I associate with England. If you ask any young person under the age of 16, what they know of England, they will say that it has a queen, and a palace, and princes and princesses and castles.

I really don't see why it should change apart from the general feeling that it represents Great Britain more than England. I honestly have a hard time seeing the difference as Team Great Britain is usually 98% English...

So what's the diffs??

It's not our anthem... it's the anthem of the UK.

England does not actually have a national anthem - whereas all the other countries do.
I guess NI technically don't, but in a sporting context (which is the only time each country really plays their own anyway) they do.

I think a lot of English people feel as if we aren't allowed to express our own identity within the UK - whereas Wales, Scotland and NI are.

Why not Deutschland über alles if you really wanted something that would connect with the monarchy
( Im so edgy I get paper cuts when I ****)
Seriously though all of those songs are better the warble warble QUEEN warble. It sounds like tens of thousands of people complaining.

GSTQ is a rather strange anthem.

I was always puzzled by the line about giving The Queen plums! :D

In a sporting context the outside world only sees GSTQ being sung for Great Britain is during the Olympics.

Cricket, Rugby, Soccer, Hockey, all these sports sing GSTQ for England.

It might be just my ignorance here, but I really can't see why it has to be changed. The Queen is after all living in England...

But it isn't our anthem! The Queen has homes everywhere.
Imagine that Africa as a continent had it's own anthem, and at sporting occasions every country had it's own anthem, except SA... you guys just get the African anthem.
That it was deemed that SA doesn't have it's own identity separate from that of Africa, so they just make do with the generic African one... how would that make Saffers feel?

It would be different if GSTQ was held particularly dear to English people's hearts... but it isn't for a lot of people.
There are several songs which many, many people feel are better embodiments of England.

Fair Enough

But then what is the English anthem then??

has there ever been a stage where another song was used by England as the national anthem?? Or was it first used by England and then adopted by Great Britain?

Sorry if this is a kak question, but I'm curious about the history of this topic and why it's all of a sudden a topic of discussion.

GSTQ is more English than British tho....the only folks outside England who are as passionate are staunch unionists here. Blasts out of Ian Paisley's alarm clock every morning (joke...tho quite possible)

England does need an anthem tho....Jerusalem the obvious contender. GSTQ should be solely a ceremonial song for Royal events.

...

That is pretty English actually...

If I had the energy I'd link to the last thread on this. Instead -

Yes I would like a change
No your external perceptions don't do a good job of recognising how a lot of us feel (said with a smile)
Jerusalem would be the obvious choice

Actually, despite some affection for GSTQ, I wouldn't be upset if they changed the National Anthem to the medley they used in the Olympic opening ceremony.

Or the Imperial March.

I'd prefer Land of Hope and Glory. Jerusalem is still to religiousy for my liking. Talking about Jesus coming over here <strike>taking our jobs being</strike> being Godly and all that. The line about getting a chariot matches well with swing low though.

Would prefer:

I like GSTQ, it's unique and a bit of a throw back to times when nations didn't really exist and you pledged allegiance the ruler of your region. The Queen's our leader, it's the Welsh and Scots who've got it all wrong and went with this modern nationhood lark.
