Transfers rumours

Chiefs U18 prop jack Stanley linked with Tigers, Sale and Wuins with Tigers favourites.

Do you know what he's been up to recently? He was announced as having signed (possibly DR) for my local club, but 15 games in, I've not seen sight nor sign of him. I seem to remember hearing about him taking time out of the game.

He was an absolute freak as a youngster, a real man among boys. There's a TRP article about him that says he's 20 stone 6lbs, so I guess he's continued developing. Certainly one with potential.

The boy is coming home. JJ is returning home. Also seems Jaco is staying santa came early

Apprently he had a injury and Chiefs released him.and now want him back but so do Tigers, Quins and Sale.

I hope we haven't ruined another young flyhalf.

I'm really starting to fall out of love with my club.

I really se his future as a 12 or 15.
Competition will be crazy though.
Keatley expected to move so Bill Johnston and Tyler will be also battling for 10.

At 12 Rory Scannell is flying it and Chris Farrell still a possibility. Jaco Taute also may be there.

That's the weight he was listed as when he was in the u18 squad, so 17, I think.

Tigs, what happened to that u20 prop from the Tigers' academy? He was in a couple of years ago, think his name was Rudkin? Did Judo.

Seems to be one of those guys who dropped off the face of the planet. (not that he stood out particularly)

Glad to have JJ back. He can still be the player he promised to be, and we produce guys with his potential rarely. Do still hope we bring Farrell in. Serious depth building out of absolutely nowhere. Keatley has been a great servant for us through the years, and even though he's had a rough time, this club owes him a debt of gratitude, but for his own sake I hope he moves on to maybe an up and coming club that can use his experience. He's not been bad this year. Better 12 than a 10.
We have a wealth of talent in the backs now in pretty much every position except 9, with Bleyendaal, Johnston and maybe JJ competing at 10, with Scannell and most likely JJ competing at 12, Taute, Saili, Arnold maybe at 13 for now, maybe Farrell when Saili moves on, and a back three of Zebo, Sweets and Earls with Conway and O'Mahony and young guys like Wootton coming up as cover.

Not sure really don't think he plays anymore.

We have betts in the senior academy along with Hills at LH, and we have the current England U18 LH in the junior academy.

Yeah, it's weird... some guys get to the pinnacle level in age grade, and then completely stop playing.

Mental.

I never really thought he was big enough for prop at AP or Champ level.

But I think a lot choose Uni over rugby if they fail to make an AP team guess mix of better long term options and a lot of there friends will be in there final year of Uni and feel left out.

Not many go seem to want to go into the championship or Nat one as a development path really, (which looking at the wages etc I can understand).

I know... he wasn't very good (at that level, anyway).

It's just odd, that some of the guys he was playing with go on to be "superstars", and he does literally nothing else in the game.

I used to work with a lad who was a Scotland under 19 and 20 player but just chose to go into the business world instead. Mental

I'm struggling to understand what's "mental" about turning down 10-15 years of possible uncertainty (albeit with the chance of rich rewards) to pursue a secure career. Seb Jewell played England Under 20s and found himself out of work three weeks before Christmas. Well done to the player you mention for having the sense to realise that the number of players coming through simply doesn't stack up with the number of opportunities to play professional rugby.

I can only speak for myself; I wasn't suggesting the decision (if they are actually decisions - rather than forced) to not pursue a career in the sport is "mental" just the idea that the supposed elite at one point or another aren't good enough to sustain even a mediocre premiership career in some cases.

especially considering your average rugby player doesn't exactly make a lot of money... going into business could give you 50 years of upper middle class income while rugby gives you 10

I used to do athletics with a high jumper who won some international vests and still sits just outside the top 10 all time Brits. He could have gone higher still, but jacked it in prematurely as it just didn't float his boat and he much preferred playing average league football with his mates. Just because you have a talent doesn't mean you want to use it as either a career or a hobby.

Fully understood, my point was directed at living sacrifice, who used the word "mental". I totally agree with your point. Players develop at different rates and in some cases while big enough for age group rugby, aren't big enough for the professional game. Not meaning to single him out for special abuse, but Joel Conlon stood out to me as someone who would fall foul of this syndrome and it is proving thus. As I said, simple numbers suggest that England age group honours are far from a guarantee of a long successful professional career in the game - there just aren't enough jobs to go around.

Not everyone wants a career in rugby mind: the intense conditioning; the dietary requirements; the regular travel; the risk of repeat injuries, permanent brain damage or physical disability; the post-career uncertainty and possible depression; the pressures of fame; the home life pressures if you need to move regularly to find a contract... as much as I enjoy rugby, I can very easily see why it might not be for some people.
