[RWC2023] France v Namibia Date: Thursday, 21 September Kick-off: 20:00 BST

Confirmed maxillo-zygomatic fracture (clueless what that means - over to you @Quel Carreleur).

Will remain with the squad but unclear how long he'll be out for.
Better news than the jaw - now it depends on the nuance of the fracture, but I expect to see him on the pitch again for the QF.

Some said that if it is only a simple fracture, Dupont could replay after 10 days so fingers crossed.
Yes, you can play sooner (than 3 weeks), but would be against (UK) medical advice. We've seen players play through with these fractures, not just finishing the match, but turning out again the following week.
But rugby insurance is stricter in France (see a couple of players who've been unable to get insurance to play, in France, but have in the UK) - which is well beyond myu capacity to comment on.
Medical advice would be 21 days; France have 24 days before the QF, and don't need him before then, so I wouldn't risk it. I'd argue that you don't need him against Eng/Arg/Wal/Aus/Fij either, so give him a better chance for the final - but that's very much personal opinion (3 weeks okay, 5 weeks much better)

Much better news than a mandible fracture. Nuances, as mentioned above - nondisplaced zygomatic arch fx, typically treated conservatively in the States. For elite athletes for faster recovery, or for badly displaced fx - internal metal plating. If lateral orbital rim or floor, or maxillary sinus involved, much bigger deal and longer recovery. A scrum half could prob get away with a plastic face shield after a few weeks (would be a lot tougher for props, locks, 8), but don't know if allowed in rugby. Guessing he will also need to pass concussion Impact test too.

My favorite player, hugely personally disappointed and sad for WC.

JFC don't do that, I thought Brad had been called up for a second.

This has echoes of Zidane in 1998 but he was sent off in the group stage v SA and banned for 2 matches returning for the QFs.

Likely see him donning a mask ala Batman to protect it?

Quarterfinal is in three weeks. If there is any doubt at all shouldn't they just have surgery now have him be back in time?

Reading some update in France, it does not look positive at all. Even with a light fracture, if bones have not moved, with no need of surgery, he could in theory come back within 3 weeks but it would still be fragile (I have read 6 weeks at least for a young adult to have a bone as strong as before the fracture) and any shock to the same place could have significant health consequences (and the possibility for him to be hit at the same place is not negligible, he would play with the break on). If there is surgery, he would not recover in 3-4 weeks and so the world cup would end for him. We will know more this weekend, he is seeing a specialist in Toulouse today for complementary exams and advices.

So it looks like we will have to do without Dupont unfortunately, better to know it now and prepare for the alternatives

I think its important he doesn't take reckless risks but as everyone has noted 21 days seams likely France's QF is in 23 days.

So its going to be touch and go.

The tournament will be so much poorer without him in key games though. He'll be like Dan Carter perpetually chasing his Final.

I am sure George North can tell him how long he will out for. IIRC Lydiate also had to have surgery on a smashed cheekbone and had to have a plate inserted.

Edit: needs to see a surgeon to determine severity. 4-6 weeks out is only an indicator. He's only 26. At least a couple of RWCs he could still play in.

You tend to heal quickly when you have a very important match in three weeks. Athletes are willing to tolerate a lot of risk in times like these.
The decision should be taken out of Dupont's hands and be made on the basis of the best medical advice.
She broke her own jaw or your sister's? One's unfortunate, the other's a claim on her PI insurance…..
I read it the latter way, the former would make much more sense.

True, but not in his own country. Probably not as the largely undisputed best player in the world. And probably not with such a good team around him. Possibly not as captain.

The rugby gods can be fickle - just look at the shape of the ball - but this should be his moment. He's at the peak of his powers and if he's 30:70 I suspect that's a risk that will be taken.

Stuart Hogg had to withdraw from a Lions tour with similar as well
