[RWC2019][Pool D] Round 2 - Australia vs. Wales (29/09/2019)

I don't understand the hate sometimes because we have produced some of the best rugby players in the world .

I didn't realise rugby was a brand , surely it's a game of 15 Vs 15 ? Sure it's tactics and gameplan that win you matches and Wales don't do too badly at that (grandslam2019) oops Welsh arrogance, but back on point does it really matter a game is about winning , Danny cipriani looks good does all the showbiz stuff but ultimately doesn't make it to the England team , who cares it's about winning and that mentality .
Man you've summed up what I'm saying. Wales fans don't give a damn about the style or manner of winning as they are winning. For everyone else we get a shite game as a neutral and feel even worse of we aren't.

Brand/Style/Tactics it's the same difference but I never get excited about a potential scintillating game of rugby when Wales are playing.

But why should Wales fans care? If they get wins in.

Doesn't mean I have to enjoy it though.

I'm quite obviously drunk?

Probably The only team to take a dropkicoye

Yeah keep dreaming princess. If Wales version of rugby become the norm it will absolutely fade into nothing.

Yep... those dropkicoye's will kill ya!

No doubt, Wales have a way to go in terms of a fluid attack. I don't think many welsh fans would argue there. A lot of the good attacking play at the moment usually comes from a counter from the back three, after a kick. I think if anything, in the warm ups and against Georgia we started playing off a 12 inside switch and smash like we used to do with Jamie Roberts.

Wales won a lot of the games in the 6N in a similar vein to this one today, all except Ireland which was much more straightforward. They do what they do well. That's what Gatland is good at, utilising Wales' strengths. They have the best defence coach in the world and it continues to be the red wall that wins games.

Thought the backrow played well against an excellent aus backrow today. Wainwright and Navidi were outstanding. Wales are a team of momentum and this was an important win.

I dnt quite understand your post though because Wales v Australia games almost give me a heart attack so of it's boring how can that be? Just because we have a great defence (that's boring) just because Gareth Davies scores an intercept try you don't accept that as class? The vision ,awareness and confidence to take that ball is just not good enough for you?

I'll ask you a question ? How do you feel about Ireland's (brand) of rugby?.

Is playing the power game 5 yards out not boring , going through the forwards , just like Australia try against Wales right? It wasn't champagne rugby but just because England play that way now it doesnt mean the whole rugby world has to adhere to that way, England didn't win the WC playing champagne rugby, the Welsh played more champagne rugby in the 60s/70s more than any other team along with France so we've done that bit.

Somebody told me winning is everything, I'm sure you wouldn't revoke that world cup win because you won on a (boring) drop goal would you?

In my view, a lot of the Wales knocking isn't so much because the haters genuinely dislike the way Wales play, it's more of a retaliation towards the way the Welsh criticised other teams, mainly England, when they supposedly played the same way.

In summary, Welsh rugby has become everything it used to hate. But if it goes on to win WC, nobody will care about that.

I can't remember critising England during those times but you know something I don't obviously?

Perhaps it's because they had a great kicker in Jonny wilks but that wasn't critising their method of play , they won games and that was it.

Style of play also comes down to the personnel available. I'm not a fan of how Wales have typically played under Gatland, but there's an argument to say he's making the best of the players he has available.

Over the years, Wales have produced plenty of exciting/mercurial players and I'm not talking about the distant past. Players like, Steven Jones, James Hook, Shane Williams for example.

If I were picking the Wales team, I don't know if I'd go a million miles from what Gatland usually goes for. I'd be naturally inclined to a more adventurous style of play, but aside from maybe investing a bit more in Patchell, but there aren't too many players you can say have been criminally overlooked. Perhaps James Davies and Thomas Young could have had a bit more time too, but considering how good Tipuric has been, I can understand why they haven't.

It's the same with Ireland under Schmidt really, but it's different to England where Eddie has said words to the effect of English players not having the skill set to play a more exciting rugby while choosing to ignore some of our more skilled players.

Is that Australian for drop goal?
I think it is... no wonder they don't like them!

I don't like the band 'Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum' mainly coz I can't pronounce their name... their music is fab ;)!

The only decision I saw as truly controversial was the forearm and that's only because I've seen exactly the same in most games that are completely ignored.

Wales play percentages very well and they have developed a winning mentality. In the end rugby is a sport first and an entertainment second. Players are not picked or awarded contracts based on how entertaining they are.

My only criticism of the Wales tactics is they treated it as a knockout game and for me became too focused on defending their lead in the second half and allowed Australia to play their own game. It worked today, but won't always.

To be fair, the Welsh still like throwing shade at the English. Which came first (in a rugby context) will depend on who you ask.
And the 90s and early 00s was absolutely full of phrases like "moral victory" when Wales played prettier rugby whilst scoring fewer points, and often fewer tries.

FTR, I don't mind the Welsh tactics, I like variety - though I do wish it was less effective, especially against England

For all the Welsh not liking being accused of boring rugby as a go to complaint when they win, welcome to England in the early 2000's.

Like the same reason for why there is hated if Welsh rugby, there has been a lot of arrogance in Welsh rugby for a good few years involving being very poor winners and losers, particularly for games involving England and the majority of sniping at the English team comes from Welsh fans.

Fact remains though, Wales have a winning formula and personally I don't mind it. The only things I dislike about the Welsh team are awj constant whining and how they are extremely cynical on their own try line yet very rarely get carded for it.

Dont you mean abcdefg dceffghie? See if you can find the band in that anogram..

The 'brand' of rugby thing is just an excuse to have a pop... I mean we could try playing some of that 'heads-up' rugby the jocks are so proud of!

YESSS WELSHARROGANCE!..LETS CELEBRATE THIS DAY !

On a serious note I never critised England for being boring back then , yes I got fed up of them winning of course, they had the power game with the forward pack and an excellent disciplined set peice but they also had the most exciting back in j.robinson and they yet to replace him imo , that was the golden generation I just dont think this England team stacks up against that 2003 team but that's just my opinion . Again I state I never said or critised England as boring back then but just bloody clinical.

My response want aimed at anyone in particular but more general attitudes, usually found by those outside the forum.

Fact is neutrals rarely support the favourites and Wales are now among them.
