Anyone watching this? Tonight looks like the best group of the lot.

Some promising kids playing: Marchant, Aspland-Robinson, Ibitoye, Robson, Earle etc.

Lots of guys who could be England regulars over the next 5-10years on display.

As expected though - wasps are mainly senior players, most teams are primarily academy lads .

Whitely looked pretty good last year, I recall... Looking forward to seeing Earle though, serious, serious gas.

Didn't realise Mitchell was playing for Saints!

If they, and we, get out of the groups then it would be brother vs brother, as his big bro is captaining our side

grumble grumble saints poaching *******s grumble grumble

(Apparently the Mallinder family are great friends with the Mitchells, and they tried to get the older Mitchell, as he grew up with the young Mallinder lad at Saints, but he turned them down so they took his little brother instead).

It is interesting to see how teams approach the tournament, you either get a good mix across the entire playing squad, a mostly academy, or a side full of ringers brought in especially from the 7s circuits (London Welsh in previous years, and Falcons this year).

Some quality defence from Saracens.

I wonder if Wade will have a crack at England/Team GB 7s for the Olympics, as his XVs international career seems to be at a standstill? I've always thought he would do well in 7s - while he might not have the top end speed of some speedsters, his agility/acceleration is second to none, and given the extra room on a 7s pitch he could be (and has shown, so far, tonight to be) lethal.
He's one of the few premiership players who could make an impact at top level 7s, imo.

Fair point - I'm not sure they'd stop him if he said it's something he really wants to do, but they wouldn't be happy about it at all.

Not sure how the IRB Sevens matches up to the Premiership this season, because of the RWC delaying proceedings, but to be considered for Team GB you'd imagine he'd need to play a couple of 7s weekends, and miss up to a month of Wasps time.

He'd need to play a significant portion of the sevens season - what we're watching now is so far below top level sevens.

Unless he decides that wasps inst the place for him then I can't see him doing it.

Do you think SBW and the other All Blacks will?
Not saying you're wrong, just going to be an interesting situation when the XVs stars decide they want a crack at the Olympics - will the 7s coaches just draft them straight in at the expense of guys they work with week in week out?

Yes, they are first and foremost playign 7's, fitting Super XV around that. Essentially Sevens gets first dibbs on SBW et al..

Same with Speight and Cooper, they will play almost exclusively 7's - which must be abit annoying for regular 7's players.

Don't really think the contracted 7s players have much to be annoyed about as long as guys are selected on merit. I'd be far more annoyed if they didn't play for most of the season.

Wasps should win whole completion the only club to have senior players in it.

Leicester have no chance tomorrow all but one are current academy players Joe Farnworth is the only player to have played in the LV cup Farnworth is our Hooker who was an ex back rower and IMO a bigger prospect @ 2 than Thacker. (Unless Thacker can show more in the scrum this season he has bulked up though).

Without looking at the actual team list, I know there was a lot of grumbling about Falcons putting out a lot of pro-7s players (someone said their team is more Scotland 7s than Newcastle Falcons) so that could count for a lot.

Hope that teams in the future follow Wasps and put out some more of their first team players. Would certainly be interesting to watch

That's not really what it's about though... hence why everyone plays their academy kids.
