Pads and helmets actually does more damage than playing without it

Check out the death rates in gridiron before pads. While I agree their are some players who are now using their helmets as a htting tool, the game saw regular deaths before pads and helmets were brought in.

Tebow has apparently been released by the Patriots....his options are probably pretyy slim, maybe someone desperate for a body at QB e.g. Buffalo will give him a shot. Some have suggested the CFL but no team will give him a shot until next season at earliest since the season is half done up here already.

We need 1 more person to join the fantasy league, or it's not going to draft. Need an even number, and we only have 5.

Daniel Adongo has been cut by the Colts, wonder what his next move will be?

I watched a game of American Football over the weekend. It was a college game between.. I can't remember now after a lot of wine on Sunday. I remember the one team at least was from Texas somewhere. It seems an interesting enough game but some things I didn't understand;

just to clarify; one gets to play the ball a set number of times? And if you don't manage to score off of it, only then do you relinquish possession unless the opposition team gain possession in active play? which carries on until the ball carrier goes down? or the ball is dropped?

One other thing that seemed strange to me is that players seemed to go to ground very easily and hardly looked to back themselves with the ball in-hand. Is this because not losing possession is just soooo important and not worth the risk or just 'the way it is'? Don't you get the ball back if you fumble in any case?

Easy tutorial and basic rules when you start watching:

1. A team gets for opportunities (4 downs or plays) to gain 10 yards. Usually, when a team in on 4th down (after 3 attemps) the team opts to kick (punt) which gains territory, rather than turning the ball over at that exact spot

2. When the ball hits the groud, or the ball carrier hits the ground with both knees, the play is over. Same goes for when the ball is in touch

3. Getting to the end-zone, results in a touchdown. Unlike the word might suggest, you don't have to necessarily touch the ball down, like in rugby, where we call it "try". I love how these names are the exact opposite of what they actually mean. A TD is 6 points. After that a team gets the chance to go for a PAT (Point after Conversion) or, if they prefer, try a 2-point conversion. The team gets the ball at the 2 yard line and has 1 play to get another touchdown, worth 2 points. On 4th down, a team can try a field-goal (3 points) but teams only try this from 55 or 60 yards out tops.

4. The team is only allowed to throw the ball forward once per play. Usually by the Quarterback. It is allowed to throw the ball backwards as many times as you'd like, but it doesn't happen a lot.

5. If a player drops the ball after catching, it's a fumble, and the opposing team can pick it up and gain possession. It's very dangerous and players prefer to end the play by either going to ground or walk into touch rather than gaining that extra 2 yards with risking a fumble.

Pretty sure that it's one knee, or elbow (but they must have been touched by an opponent for the play to end).

Thanks, guys. That helps a lot to understand why the players opt for an ultra-conservative approach and error-limiting plays.

Just two question then;

-if team A fumbles but team B does not recover the ball first do team A still retain possession (assuming that the still have a 'down' or two left)?
- if team A manage 10 yards with their 4 possessions, do they get another chance to gain another 10 yards in another 4 opportunities or does possession switch?

If team A fumbles, both teams have the chance to grab the loose ball, which is why you suddenly see a huge pile up in the field and one guy getting up and dancing off, claiming their team has retrieved it.

If 10yds is made during a set of downs, then they are reset to 1st down again, and continue in possession. (note: the penalty for infringements is usually loss of yardage, so you can end up with 1st and 10......penalty.....2nd and 20 (2nd down, 20yds to go))

There's also such a thing as 'incomplete pass', where it's not judged as a fumble, unless the receiving player has the ball under control before dropping(fumbling) it.

Any followers of College Football here see the fake punt trick play that Villanova pulled on Boston?

Watch...

Fake punts get done from time to time but not as elaborate as that, fooled everybody

Yes, but only from a forward pass, or a lateral pass in front of the line of scrimmage. A lateral pass behind the line of scrimmage can be grounded and the ball can still be played and advanced by the offensive team. That is the basis of the bounce-pass trick play.

Funny play but if the kid cant take a chest bump without binning it then theres no hope

My draft is tonight, quite excited. The way I see it is that there are only about 10 or 12 half backs in the league worth going for one your first picks. It's a 12 man league so my order is probably going to be something like HB, WR, WR. HB, WR/QB, QB/TE, etc.

Ah, that's a shame, expected though I imagine! From what I saw of him in the ITM cup the guy is a physical specimen but not that good at Rugby. If I were him I would come back to NZ, apply myself, learn from the best and try and push for a regular Super Rugby spot. The guy has potential that is for sure (like his agression)!

We need 1 more player for fantasy league please, or the league wont be able to run due to odd numbers.

For those Kiwis interested. NFL Gameday is still free in NZ. Was wondering if it would extend to the regular season and happy to say it has. Watching Denver Baltimore now.
