MMA/UFC thread

The bookies thing would suggest a lot of panicky and uninformed bets are being placed too, you can't learn **** from a weigh in in any fight sport imo.

Disagree with the last one i think you can learn a lot in SOME fights.

Hell look at the Rousey fights pre Holm weigh in she was cool as a igloo, come Holm she was loud and looked scared.

Is Aldo vs Conor going to be a stand and bang fight or will Aldo try to use Bjj? Cant see Conor taking it to the mat myself.

Conor seems to have heavier hands but Aldo is a savage kicker. They both have a good stand up arsenal for sure.

Kind of wanting Conor to win

Even that is so so hard to call.
Before the Mendes fight everyone and their dog expected Mendes to take it to the floor as soon as possible, yet he stood up and struck. The one time it was on the floor he was so focused on the ground and pound he didn't really try for a sub, and one of the times he did he VERY nearly got it locked in.
McGregor got in his head, and I still maintain that Mendes could have won that fight if he didn't try and beat Connor at his own game.

The thing with Aldo is that, while his BJJ is excellent, so is his Muay Thai. If Connor wants to stand and trade blows then Aldo will be happy to do so. He's added an excellent jab to his repetoire recently, and from training videos it's looking like his straight right is really coming on too (in the past everyone said he couldn't jab - then he came out and won a fight basically off the strength of his jab) and now they're saying he's got no straight.

I do expect Aldo to really target McG's legs. It's a speciality of Aldo, and McGregor's stance (and his general hopping-around-like-a-rabbit-on-speed) means that it could be a very profitable line of attack.
But then that's so obvious, so the McGregor camp will have worked hard to nullify that.

All the hype about this fight has been saying "IT'S THE BIGGEST UFC FIGHT IN XXX YEARS" and I'm really buying in to it now. Such a close thing.
Fanboys will say that it'll be a walkover for one of the other, and it very well could...but who?!

Agree with this.
You can definitely tell a lot from weigh ins. 99.99% of the time there's nothing in it, but sometimes you can tell.
The swing of people going from Rousey to Holm after the weigh in was huge, and not just "casuals" but people in the know.
I reckon McGregor looked rattled and Aldo looked cool as a cucumber, and was openly laughing at McGregor when he was feinting the kick.

Could be nothing, but I know I feel more confident about Aldo after that.

Does anyone a=wanna pm me a streaming site if they have one? Gonna set the alarm for McGregor I think, head straight to sleep again after.

I definitely feel Aldo would have the advantage if it hit the mat. Aldo is known as having the best takedown defense in the ufc for a reason though because he feels more comfortable on his feet. He has never lost a striking battle and it might just be a bit more macho and satisfying to beat Conor at his own game.

I just hope (and think) that he doesn't think of anything like that and just focuses on the win.
As I mentioned before, I think that was what cost Mendes. Didn't want to take McGregor to the floor because he wanted to knock him out. Paid the price in the end.
Aldo is a much better striker than Mendes, but I just hope he sticks to his plans rather than follow his emotions.

I think it would much more entertaining if it does become a striking battle. They are two of the most impressive stand up fighters.

Conor has tremendous foot work and he's really wirey and strong quite hard to take down. Aldo isn't known to be exceptional at takedowns so im thinking he will be forced to stand up with Conor.

Be interesting to see how Aldo does deal with McGregor's movement. He's just constantly darting around the place - in theory he should be able to shut it down with his leg kick game, but whether or not he can land enough to make an impact is a very different matter.

Just seen a video of a "backstage confrontation" (social media talk for: They saw each other after getting off the scales) between McGregor and Aldo after the weigh ins.
McGregor's head has gone. He's offering out Aldo and his whole staff, saying "I'll take you, I'll take you" - looks like he's on crack or something, bouncing around shouting and singing.
Aldo just standing there like "wtf mate, take it down a notch"

Man, I really can't wait for this fight.
I'm in work tomorrow at 6am (fight is due about 5am) so I can't just pull an all nighter, actually got to try and get a few hours kip in a bit and then get up about half 3.

Going to try get some sleep now and wake up @ 4 am (Hopefully).

and watch it on my phone in bed then fall back to sleep.

Just on weigh ins. I'm not 100% in on ufc but McGregor looked weaker than usual and have heard in 36 hours before that he literally had to drain himself down to just get the 145lbs. I'd say he was really dehydrated. I'm sure they had the plan right and his nourishment etc is grand. But is McGregor on brink of having to go up a weight. I know he says he's going up but is it because he knows his body is developed to that stage.

Successfully managed to scrape myself out of bed at 4am :D

I definitely think McGregor will move up very soon - maybe even as soon as after the inevitable rematch of tonight's fight.
He's got a couple of inches on most of the guys he's fighting, and while that helps him on reach it does make his cuts harsher, and with no IV rehydration allowed anymore it'll be even harder on him.

Crazy in the Souza/Romero fight.
Romero almost KOs Souza with a spinning back fist, but then can't get close enough to finish it on the floor because of how ridiculous Souza's BJJ is. Souza almost gets the arm bar, which is more impressive at the end of the fight when Souza can barely stand, he legs are like jelly.

Also, as an aside, I don't think I've ever seen a fighter go to their correct corner at the end of a round
Always go one way before being led elsewhere.

Crazy, didn't see that going the distance at all.
Souza won 2 and 3, but Romero dominated the first. Interesting to see how this goes.
Romero with the split! Crazy, Souza's camp are livid

Really hoping the next fight is over quick, otherwise I'm going to be late for work :/

Holy **** was not expecting that

Watched it in my car outside work and had to rush in after so didn't see any replays - did Aldo slip into it or anything, or just crap guard?

He was leaning in throwing a wild right hand and got beaten to the punch with a crisp left cross, he actually still landed his punch lol even though he was already unconscious.

Just seen the replay.
Dat **** was legit.

Wonder whatll happen now - I hope they don't rush a rematch, and give Edgar a shot instead.
Connor could fight again tomorrow, his warmup was tougher than that

Recorded it and watched it just now... was not expecting that at all!

As concise as it gets.

The Notorious"Precision beats power and timing beats speed and that's what you saw there."

Now that I have seen that in HD (not just a ****ty stream lol), it was actually much more impressive. Conor is right when you hit a guy with 4oz gloves on with that kind of precision then its no surprise the lights go out.
A lot of fan's probably think Aldo can't take a punch now, but it looked like a punch with a lot of snap on it and it landed right on the button.

I think if Conor is really struggling to make weight then he might as well go up a division, he could fight Edgar, Aldo 2, Mendes 2, but there are much more interesting challenges at lightweight. Dana White said he can fight for the 155 ***le in his next fight if he wants it!

That was Condit's fight, for my money.

He ate some shots, for sure, and everyone knows that Lawler punches like a mule kicks, but I just really think Condit should have gotten the decision.
Both corners had Condit as the winner, and reading through fight forums and social media it seems like the only people that had Lawler as the winner were the judges.

Guess that all that counts, really.
I'd definitely like to see a rematch between the two.
