Why is he playing for England? Nothing to do with his parents . He is playing for England because he couldn't play for New Zealand

Why is Carl fearns playing in france, when he knows he can only be selected playing for England.
It can't surely be about the money can it?????

Who's the biggest merc the guy moving to England to play for England (And some cash)
or the guy playing in France for the cash......

Let me seee.......

If he'd had a viable, regular, AB career beckoning he wouldn't have jumped on the plane. He was born in NZ, raised there, played his rugby there, represented them at U20 and has lived his whole life there. He may have an affinity for Eng through his parents, but with that background he'd be a very odd fish if his preference hadn't been for black over white.

With the rules as they are and the way players move now I get a lot less exercised by it all. But of course I'd much prefer to see home grown talent representing us.

At least he has some proper links through his parents. I see him as more opportunistic than outright mercenary.

No doubt. I feel the same way.

But Tallshort's assertion that it's literally only money that could interest him is bunkum.
As I described, I know from experience (more than the one I mentioned) that people can have tremendous affinity to the nationality/country of their parents.
It's not universal, but it can even supercede their nationalism to the country they were raised in. I'm not suggesting that's the case here at all, by the way, just that in my experience, it's not actually all that uncommon.

This. It's not impossible that he supported England but wanted to play for NZ having gone through their systems and not particularly wanting to move country and a higher chance of success. I'd have been like that with two counties here, which we identify very closely with in Ireland, had I been a far far more talented gaelic footballer!

Nationality is such a malleable concept anyway, their are people out there identifying as different species, a lad playing for his parents country and being a positive addition if used correctly is nothing to blink at.

he plays for england because they are in desperate need of a captain

Captaincy is not the problem, the problem is crap work at the breakdown and refs seemingly having a perception that we are so punishing at times incorrectly, not to mention a 10 that would get dragged from one end of the pitch to the other when attempting a tackle unless backup steps in.

Why all this chat about Shields? No one knows, but he may have always seen himself as English. A lot past migrants from India, born in England will see themselves as Indian. A lot people I know who are half welsh, never stepped foot in Wales, see themselves as Welsh.

A lot of hoohaa about nothing here, and it surprises me that the World Rugby said it was a sad time.... the French have Fijians in their team with no link to France. I can't remember any person of note mentioning Parkes' call up for Wales high up in organisation.

Unless anyone knows Shields' personally, we can't really comment on his circumstances, and it's all guess work.

Glad he's playing for England though.

Nathan hughes is here for payday and lifestyle. Could have played for fiji and wasnt born here so should he not play? No english parents has he? Where is the hate from him?
Don't forget Solomona. And while we are at it,
Brad Barrett and our former captain.

It's starting to sound like some on here are suggesting that only those bourne to the sound of God Save the Queen and raised in England on scones, cucumber sandwiches, Pimms and warm ale, should be playing for England. It's not 1900s anymore chaps. Welcome to the new global community.

As for the team I'm pretty happy. I'm glad to see Shields start so we can see what he can do in his chosen position. Really
Hope Solomona gets a decent chance and the same goes for Cips. Really think they both could bring impact if given some time to do so. Feel sorry for Isekwe but maybe it was just too soon for him. I'm sure he'll be back.

This has got to be a crunch game for us. We need to stop the rot and winning this series 2-1 would go a long way to achieving that. We've certainly got the players (although our lack of lock cover is still a worry) we just need to manage the game better, play in the right areas of the pitch, stop the stupid penalty count, and have Mako sit on Faf de Klerk at every opportunity, and we'll be fine.

Yeah ones playing for privately owned club the is representing a national side. Nothing wrong with earning a living but lets not pretend Shields is there because he feels English. He is there because he wasnt good enough to play for NZ and saw a way to make more money and raise his profile through a rather desperate England.

What a splendid idea old bean, although change the soundtrack to Land of Hope and Glory.

All provided they can pronounce 'scone' correctly.
