Masi is the first Italian to win the award

</td></tr></tbody></table> Italy full-back Andrea Masi has been voted RBS Player of the Championship for this year's Six Nations, becoming the first Italian to win the award.
Masi secured more than 30% of the 17,000 votes cast by rugby supporters.
He edged out his compatriot, scrum-half Fabio Semenzato, with Ireland flanker Sean O'Brien third ahead of England duo Toby Flood and Chris Ashton.
Masi scored a try in the Azzurri's historic 22-21 win against France, when he also won the man-of-the-match award.
He also scored in their 21-8 defeat by Scotland at Murrayfield, having moved to full-back for Italy's last two matches after starting their first three on the wing.
"To to be named the player of the Championship is a fantastic way to end what has been one of the most competitive championships I can remember. Italian rugby continues to strengthen and we are very happy with our progress as a team," Masi said.
His achievement is all the more impressive given that Italy finished bottom of the Six Nations table for the ninth time in 12 years.
"It has been a championship of highs and lows for the Italian team," Masi added. "Our win against France will go down in rugby history but to finish sixth frustrated us all."
As well as the epic win against France, the Italians lost narrowly at home to Ireland and Wales but were well beaten at Twickenham and Murrayfield.
Masi follows last year's winner Tommy Bowe, whose Ireland team-mate Brian O'Driscoll won the award in three of the previous four years, with Wales wing Shane Williams claiming it in 2008.
Meanwhile Italy centre Gonzalo Canale has been suspended for two weeks for a dangerous tackle on Simon Danielli in Saturday's 21-8 Six Nations defeat by Scotland.
The Clermont Auvergne back is able to resume playing on 4 April and has the right of appeal.

How long till the schoolkids turn up and moan it wasn't Youngs, Ashton, O'Brien or O'Driscoll?

Good choice IMO

Got to agree, Parisse was pretty amazing also.

Fairplay!
He was consistently good
Would've been between him Parisse and Lamont for me - everyone else was hot/cold

Good to see an Italian winning it though, first time ever!
Though it's surprising that Parisse's not had it before

Personally I don't like the system as players like Parrise and Gray are not even on the list. Masi had a good tournament as did Parrise.

Any voting system will always be ******** anyway - Irish will always vote for Irish players, Welsh for Welsh, Scots for Scots, English don't bother etc.

Online votes are even more a joke.

This is my first message in the forum. I'm Italian and I'm very happy for our Masi! I like this forum..

Welcome! :)

Interesting to see he beat Sean "James Haskell" O'Brien - Either a lot of Italians were voting on this, or people actually voted with some sense :p

Good for him altho if it was going to be an Italian I would have thought of Parisse, Bergamasco or Canale.

Ye but the idea of the short list being only players to have won MOTM in the first four week is a joke for example O'Gara was on the shortlist even though he only started 2 games and Gray, Parrise, BOD etc. didn't even get on the shortlist even though they all played well. It seems like alot of people voted for Italians as Semenzato came second with 12% of votes and Flood and O'Brien came joint third with just over 10% of votes each.

I voted Semenzato.
Because it's been his first 6 N, and though he's not a true youngster (he's 24), after all the failures with the scrum halves (Tebaldi, Toniolatti, Canavosio, Picone, Gori - these last two very unlucky with injuries! :( ), maybe Italy have finally found a solid playmaker, focused on the game, giving pace and rythm to the attacks, which is a lot for our side!
I don't know what kind of player can play his first 6N with this intensity, keeping cool mind and hot hands!

Hopefully, once Gori will be back, and Picone will have fixed his problems (he always has been my favourite), we're gonna have some good choices at 9, with a true youngster (Gori) to raise in the forthcoming years!

Go Mozzarella*!!! :D

There's only a problem: Gori, Semenzato and Picone are all staying in Treviso (and now Tobias Botes is playing in the starting XV). Not the best opportunity to build up some experience in ML and HC! :(

*his nickname! :D

Can't argue with Masi as he was excellent.
Strange how he started at 15 only because McLean was injured and now Italy have surely got to cement him there

I have not voted..I'm in accord with my you..Semenzato has been a good change for us. This year I have seen another Italy, little better to see..

Good, at a player that actually played well enough to deserve the award

I wouldve voted for Richie Gray, but he was not shortlisted.
Masi had a great championship though, congratulations to him and to all the italians.
