England v Wales

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Mr.cyclopede @ Feb 6 2010, 07:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div>
England not really superior IMO, but Walles really gave them the self-confidence and the means to get it by themselves. I think that with England, you shouldn't give them the time to reach this confidence, when the clutch is engaged, the machine goes on, maybe slowly, but never goes backwards.

Maybe a lesson for players to start playing at the beginning of the match.[/b]
I agree, we might not be flairy and exciting like France, Wales and Ireland can be, but we just trudge onwards,
I can't imagine other countries giving us the chances Wales did today
I think the Wales and France matches should be good games though, especially if Fluteys back.
Nothing against Flood, but he's a better 10 than 12, and doesn't take risks like Flutey does

On a sidenote: I thought the Referee was very good today, didn't favour either side, and reffed the breakdown very well

Wow, where do you begin with such a game?
Firstly, i want to congratulate England on the win. They deserved to win it. They may not have played well all the time, but they put together enough good time to get the win. They didnt concede too many penalties and when they did it wasnt in crucial areas. Plus, they didnt suffer from their yellow card curse.
England took their opportunities when given. And like i prophecised, Wilkinson rightly chosen against Wales because we are so illdisciplined and he nailed us all over the field as far as points are concerned.
Wales, however, we very poor. Not taking anything away from england, because they were the better team. But Wales almost seemed scared about being in Twickenham - it was pathetic.
Danny Care played really well for england and earning his place and even though Borthwick comes under a load of slack i thought he was an admirable captain today.
Alyn Wyn Jones was an absolute knob. No excuse for what he did, no reason why he should have done it when there were two players ready to tackle the player he tripped up.

Although, the one thing i hate being right about over and over again is Tom James.
The guy is without a doubt the most overrated player in Wales, maybe even Britain. He cant do anything right and i dont think there are any welsh boys that can argue with me for much longer.
He needs to be dropped - aside from Englands dominance and AWJ he was a key reason as to why we lost the game.

Gatland was a bit too open in his interview - blamed the whole thing on one player, when his team only performed in flashes.

What a pity for Wales - Hooke's try would have gone down in legend if they'd won.

I'll focus on England - Thought Hartley looked tidy when involved, Borthwick had a fantastic game (like he did against New Zealand, mind you) and Shaw was pretty dependable as ever. Back row functioned brilliantly, Easter seems to calm everyone down and picked his moments brilliantly. Care had a brilliant game and I just wonder why he wasnt allowed to express himself in the Autumn. Wilkinson did fine but hopefully he'll open up a bit more next week. Tait took his moment well, Flood was pretty anonymous, Cueto had a really good game and was solid as ever. Pretty good selections all round by Johnno. Come on England!

Voice is hoarse, quite quite drunk and I've spent the last half hour trying to get my phone onto TRF.

What a win. What a win. Cynical posts be damned sir! If all we can do after a win is whinge about the loss that never happened or the loss that may (or may not) happen in the future then we do not deserve to win.

Guys in the England supporters jerseys, jesus christ, just crack open a cold one sit back and savour the moment! I know I am! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA! :D

We're slowly turning a corner, it was a close run thing but we managed to front up and come back. Hooks try was genius though I'll have to admit that.

No, Gatland wasnt too open and he rightly said what he said.
Alyn Wyn Jones deserved to be publically dressed down for what he did. It was pathetic and you cant say one way or another as to what would have happened if he stayed on the field, but it every action has an impact and the 10 minutes that followed were certainly a negative impact for Wales.

I've been getting steadily drunker since the Ireland game kicked off :p
Seriously considering spending the last of my student loan on a new England jersey :p

Two tries conceded in the time he was off the pitch really shows that

It's easy to blame Wyn Jones, and yes he was incredibly stupid, but had Wales held out when England were camped on their line before the break, they'd have obviously gone in with a better mindset for the second half, instead they went in probably playing the blame game which would have done nobody any good and then out they come in the second half with the wrong attitude and bang England get their second try.

Cooper had a shocker though, there were a couple of times where Wales had great positions only for Cooper to take the wrong option, contrast that with the performance of Care.

Quality try from Hook though to briefly make a game of it.

Still though 17 points with Wales down to 14, got to give credit to England for capitalising on that but what will happen when sides stay at full strength?

I'm really looking forward to the Ireland game now
Though there's a good chance of Ireland whooping us, i can't wait to see if we can improve on todays performance
and considering there was only 1 point in it last year, should be a goodun :p

small matter of the French before that but either way it should be a savage game as both sides championship hopes will depend on winning this game. Lose in Paris and win in Twickenham and the show is back on the road, win in Paris, then it's off to Twickenham to keep the grand slam hopes going. Nothing changes for England though as they'll still be on track for the grand slam, no offence to Italy. Either way cracking game in store.

Exactly. They were ruthless against 14, but melted like butter as soon as Wales got back to 15. Lack of experience, poor leadership.

Well, that was a game of two very unclinical sides giving each other every chance to score tries. England seemed far better than in the Autumn - thanks mainly to a much better balanced back row, an excellent game from the halfbacks, and some glimpses of dynamism in the backs. Wales on the other hand look to be going nowhere fast. They have some great players, all of whom are going slightly over the hill/ injured/ off form. Which meant today they had no one who looked like changing the game - one which they didn't deserve to win, but should have won.

As far as player ratings:

Tim Payne - 4. Was the better part of a very poor scrummaging unit, but missed a basic tackle for Hook's try, and made errors in the loose.
Dylan Hartley - 4. Good throwing in, but went backwards in posession, and part of a rubbish scrum.
David Wilson - 3. A very poor day at the office for a tighthead.
Simon Shaw - 5. Effective as usual, but gave away a lot of silly penalties as usual.
Steve Borthwick - 8. Cracking game. Ruined Wales' lineout in the 1st half, and popped up usefully in the loose. May not be world class but is by far the best lineout 2nd row in England.
James Haskell - 8. Played it hard, fast and physical, and seems to have eradicated the idiocy from his game.
Lewis Moody - 6. Useful contribution, but outplayed by Williams as he was by Holah and will always be by proper fetchers.
Nick Easter - 9. My man of the match. Great handling, dynamic carries - what the pack have missed of late.
Danny Care - 8. Best performance for England so far. Sniping, quick, and caused Wales lots of problems. Should grow into a very good 9.
Jonny Wilkinson - 7. Perfect off the tee, and much better out of hand. Managed the game well.
Ugo Monye - 7. Looked a threat when he had the ball, and much better in defence.
Toby Flood - 7. Complemented Wilkinson nicely.
Matthew Tait - 7. At times looked a little lightweight, but offers more spark than anyone wearing 13 for England has done since he last played here. Superb offload for the 3rd try,
Mark Cueto - 8. Fantastic defensive game, much needed considering Armitage's performance.
Delon Armitage - 4. Badly out of form, dropped about 5 high balls, kicked poorly and missed a bad tackle. Redeems himself slightly with his interception.

I won't rate the Wales team, but Paul James, Adam Jones, Martyn Williams and Ryan Jones can all be pleased with their performances. Alun-Wyn Jones should shoot himself for that stupid trip; Powell gave away too many penalties; Cooper was abysmal; the centres very quiet and Tom James & Byrne were also poor.

For the Italy game:

1. I'd pick Mullan at loosehead, though Payne will keep his place. Dan Cole and Steve Thompson really stabilized the scrum when they came on, and should start.
2. Flutey should be coming back, which means that Flood will go back to the bench. Id' still rather Flood than Wilkinson, but those goals he kicks are invaluble.
3. Armitage will be lucky to keep his place. I think he will, but it means he really needs a stormer to prove to people why he was so highly rated last year.
4. Please lets have Lawes on the bench.

Yeah,
Changes i'd make:
Lawes on the bench always (would like to see him start, but i wouldn't drop Shaw, and after Borthwicks good performance today, he wont be dropped as lock, or as captain)
Flutey in for flood, Flood on the bench though (though I think Hape will be on the bench/see game time against italy)
I'd like to see a Mullan/Cole prop combo, but as you said, Johnson won't ditch Payne
Foden in at fullback
Ashton on the bench (can he cover anywhere other than wing though? If he can't that hurts his chances of a benchspot, though maybe him, Hape and Foden will all start for the Italy match)

The changes I'd have would be to have Lawes and Ashton on the bench and move Flutey back to replace Flood. The Monye, Cueto and Armitage functioned well so no changes there.

I think Ashton has played the odd game at Center for Saints? Is that true?

The team that I'd like to see in Rome is

1. Mullan
2. Hartley
3. Wilson
4. Borthwick
5. Lawes
6. Haskell
7. Moody
8. Easter
9. Care
10. Wilkinson
11. Monye
12. Flutey (Hape if injured)
13. Tait
14. Cueto
15. Foden

16. Mears
17. Cole
18. Shaw
19. Armitage
20. Youngs
21. Flood
22. Ashton

Ashton definitely on the bench - great player waiting for his chance. Lawes? No - needs to prove himself alot more before Johnson does him the honour.

I think its better to have a guy who can play several positions and who is in form on the bench than someone who while having experience may not be in form. I mean, who else do we have currently? Theres Steffon Armitage but he's in the same boat as Lawes in my opinion.

Lawes has stood up really well so far this season and its partly thanks to him that Saints have really competed.

How long exactly does one have to prove oneself? You're falling into the same conservative trap as most England selectors fall into. Australia have ploughed on ahead with the likes of Genia and Pocock regardless of whether they've "proven themselves" because Deans knew they were quality.

Granted, Deans doesn't have a clue what to do if it rains but he still made the right choice tapping Genia & Pocock.

Granted Lawes may not have massive amounts of experience, but how's he supposed to get experience if he's not played because he has no exp.? It's a vicous circle
Italy is a good chance to get Ashton, Hape, Lawes and Foden some decent game time

As a sidenote, I've been waiting roughly five years for a photo of an England player pwning..well..anyone and then about twelve turn up at once!

I know the instances over the past half decade are out there it just seems sports photographers are mainly Australian or Scottish and thus don't want to photograph that kind of thing :(

Lawes is a lock. Get him to jump in the lineout and take crash ball in a straight line. That's what he can do. He is too slow and awkward for backrow. Johnson is Mr Lock, so I presume he's an expert on the qualities needed for that position.

And I'm being conservative? Giving Ashton a lash now, especially if Foden is in there, would be perfect. How many backs have you had that stayed the course over the last ten years? Wilkinson and Catt. End of story. Ten years from now you'll be talking about Ashton with pride.
