Aviva Premiership - Round 1

Kinda hard to have an atmosphere when there are only 2,700 people in attendance!
Still... look on the bright side - that's actually more than double their average for last season.

You're right, and that was kind of my point. Interesting that the attendance figure you cites is less than half the capacity of the Old Deer Park...well played RFU!

It's also half the average attendance of last time they were in the Premiership!

RFU? Pretty sure that their move to Oxford was necessitated by PRL rules (which are reasonable IMO).

Old Deer Park is a beautiful ground though... I understand what PRL are aiming for but I never understood why not let them redevelop ODP over a couple of years?

If LW had aspirations to gain promotion they could have* - the trouble is it wasn't on their radar and they weren't ready for it.

I think the PRL should introduce a new rule that forces clubs to erect giant neon logos above the stand opposite the TV camera platform.

*I know planning permission may very well not have been easy to get - but the point is that the rule shouldn't have come as a surprise to them.

PRL, you're quite correct. I'm getting my governing bodies confused!

The Old Deer Park is a great ground, I played a few times there in the age grades and have been back for some sevens, and usually has a good atmosphere. I can see why the PRL wanted Welsh to move but given the circumstances around their promotion and the potential of the ground I think they should have made an exception and helped Welsh develop it. The current situation helps no one and is going to stunt Welsh as a club.

Does anyone know how long their agreement to use the Kassam has to run?

So a season after this one and they may need a new home. Will be interesting to see what they choose to do.

Nah... I think they signed it at the beginning of last season - so they have three more including this season.

I can't actually find any evidence of this contract - so it appears I may, in fact, be talking out of my arse.

Wouldn't be the first time! :p

Whenever they do have to leave, I hope they put some serious thought into redeveloping the Old Deer Park and moving back.

I reckon they might find getting planning difficult TBH, bearing in mind it's all of two miles away from two 80,000 and soon to be 20,000 capacity stadiums.
I also think that Richmond Council probably quite likes it's quaint little park* as it is.

*I'm assumming it's a typical SW London park and not a ****hole!?

Well we lost to tigers by a big scoreline...but i think that does us alot of dis-service as the game was much closer than that scoreline would suggest.
We also seemed to have a difficult afternoon with the referee over scrummaging.

Some stand outs...Socino, Hammersley, Sinoti, Furno suggest we could do ok this season...not the relegation favorites everyone has us down as.

I think most people had LW as relegation favorites, even prior to yesterday.

You'd be surprised Rats...a number of them had us down as favorites to be relegated.

Anyway it was encouraging to watch especially after a pre season that had me deflated.

Is Stegmann really as bad as he appeared to be yesterday? Didn't he accrue quite a few caps for quins?

Seriously though some of those signings were never going to pay off. They took Wasps' 4th choice loosehead and 4th choice tighthead from last season (when our depth was pretty poor to be honest) and made them 1st choice front-rowers. That's hardly a sign of intent.

Doesn't seem to be a place to discuss other countries and their rugby performances so I'll post in here until someone corrects me wrong. :(. There was nothing in the International and General to put this too.

New Zealand vs South Africa at the weekend. Never mind the big match up with Aus vs Arg this is the match that I'm interested in. Could be alot of repercussions if the match turns ugly for South Africa. It's got the hallmarks of an outright hammering written all of it. New Zealand in a good place, playing well but just keeping the basics simple and effective. The Saffas in a mess, tactically, physically for the first time and mentally. Meyer picking the old guard all at once which has brutally damaged their development. It could get really bad very quickly for them. To the point where I'm not watching the match per say but I will be tuned into Meyer after the post talk because I don't think they can win.

It will be a matter of how much.

There is a whole thread in the rugby championship featured part of the forum :)
