A Political Thread pt. 2

He better have done, otherwise he's going to look like a right *** if he does get fined. He was the former DPP, so should know.
I wonder if he does resign if he'll fight it at the magistrates. One of those theoreticals though of several moves down the line.

If I were Johnson and the Conservatives I'd be loving this. If nothing happens then it's not much different to before. However, if he does get a FPN and resign well it throws Labour into a new leadership contest and means a new leader has to win the trust of the voters. We already know Johnson has zero morality so the difference between him and Starmer won't affect him that much. For me Labour have painted themselves into a corner with their morality.

Johnson is a spawny twat. Party gate? Putin invades Ukraine, bad local election results? Leader of the opposition is having a lockdown ruby.

Really think Labour have overplayed their hand a bit here, there were plenty of other things to go at Bojo about like the impending recession for instance

Doesn't this work for them it allows them continue to attack on partygate whilst in short term neutralise criticism of Starmer so he can also attack on the recession.

For instance Starmer can now go to the Queen speech for tommorow and attack them on their plans and Johnson can't really bring up beer gate at all. Of course he'll just say a diffrent bits of tosh.

But that's the point Johnson won't resign he'll cling to power to the bitter end. You just have completely sour him in Tory MP or the publics eyes.

We've been here before, albeit with a different thing. Johnson has not once corrected the record at the Commons, meaning he has lied and the lie has been kept on the books, uncorrected. This obviously means he never "misspoke" and fully intends to stick to the lie. Starmer had a moment where he said something incorrect and got hauled up on it. As soon as it was pointed out, Starmer corrected the record. Do the Tory voters care? Not a bit. As far as they are concerned, Starmer is as big a liar as Johnson because of the and the fact Johnson has NEVER corrected the record whilst Starmer did simply doesn't factor into their thinking at all.

I think it will be the same here. If Starmer is fined and resigns, will Tory voters care that one leader stood by their word and actually did practice what they preach (resigning when found to have been in the wrong)? Of course not, they will point the finger with much enthusiasm claiming he's a complete hypocrite and no better, completely ignoring the very different results to being fined or the very different scale of the breaches.

I do agree that Starmer should resign if fined, his position becomes indefensible and I do not care to support someone who will be like Johnson to beat Johnson. Johnson is the absolute scraping the bottom of the barrel of lying, deceitful and lacking integrity politician in this country overseeing a wholly corrupt party and government. Those who still support him don't have any care for this, it's all down to "my side winning" at this stage. Better to attempt to win over those for whom integrity does still matter than to chase after the lost causes who will continue to vote Tory even if their policy was to fire nukes at ourselves.

It's funny looking at the comments there, it seems even some Mail readers are able to see the crass hypocrisy and blatant partisanship of the right wing press. It's laughable at this stage. Hell, the Express ran with the headline "Starmer humiliated" after the local elections and the Mail didn't even shown it on the front page (usual royal BS everywhere). At least when things go against Labour you will still see it on the front page of something like the Guardian if it's a significant story. The extent to which the right wing press are trying to control the narrative and outright lie / pretend things aren't happening is ridiculous. It's no wonder so many of their readers are so woefully misinformed and think everyone else is lying...

I did see a really good comment on a forum the other day saying that Zelensky is proof that comedians can be politicians whereas clowns cannot.
Doesn't half ring true at the minute!

Having been so voiciferous that Johnson and Sunak should resign, Starmer totally backed himself into a corner. This isn't really about morals, it's a political judgement call, realistically he had no other choice.

If he's cleared he can play the moral card for all he's worth. Whether that gets him anywhere is another matter.

If he gets a FPN and resigns then it's chaos for Labour again, especially if Rayner goes too. But if he does go, that also puts Johnson between a rock and a very hard place, increased by having been in power and with the possibility of more sanctions to come. Perversely Starmer's departure for a single COVID breach might also be the catalyst that gets shot of Johnson.

I think it can be both its possibly more of the former than the latter but we've seen what happens with Johnson when someone has no morals on this stuff. Starmer would just be staying on regardless.

Starmer had no choice really. It's clear that the Tories (via doubtless shady methods and dark arts) have invested a lot of time and money in attempting find new evidence which they have handed over to Durham police with the sole intention of deflecting attention away from Johnson and to make Starmer appear no different.

Starmer knows the media would have been pressing him to say what he would do in the event that he received a FPN - he has simply pre-empted this media pressure by voluntarily outlining his position.
