A Political Thread pt. 2

I have a friend who regularly says the papers don't set the new they follow it these days, beergate is apparently having no effect on public perception.

I also maintain the public are not as stupid as some people make out and can tell the difference from a potential minor breach of the rules when coming out of lockdown that was already investigated and the flagrant disregard that went on at no10. As always noted the cake birthday party isn't the one that gets people riled up.

I want to know who the 3% are that changed their minds and now think Johnson did generally follow the rules after he became a criminal and received his FPN.

I saw the mail headline today and honestly amazed they are still going with beergate when you have a prime minister claiming credit for allowing a 77 year old woman to spend all day on the bus for free so she doesn't have to use electricity.

When 30% of country say they are still voting Tory regardless it isn't surprising a small amount will use the "it was only cake line"

Also on top of being completely botched and mainly just a political stunt, anyone else surprised by this?

Given that I mentioned it 2 weeks ago (though, without a link) - no, not remotely surprised.

It's a feature, not a bug; along with the absolute demoralising mess of paperwork required, meaning people like my mum and aunt both quit the process because it was just too much; and along with granting visas to an entire family EXCEPT for one child, so the rest "decide" not to come - but we still get to claim we offered 80% of applicants a visa...

Yeah whole thing is a sham.

On top apparently, Patel's Rwanda scheme is apparently no where near ready, already months behind and still waiting for legal challenges. May target is never going to happen.

Meanwhile the only actual thing the government to alleviate bills in the short term is also a complete shambles. Originally council tax rebates were meant to be end of April yesterday our borough said the payment would randomly turn up between now and the end of June. Whilst we still pay our council tax direct debits.

The most frustrating thing is how are people supposed to budget if the money can come any time in the next two months? What is someone was actually reliant on it in April?

I would say **** up and brewery but that us the one thing they could do.

This even for Farage is unbelievably stupid. The European Court of Human Rights has nothing to do with the EU...

But I am glad that all the cheers for the Rwanda policy have gone silent as they claimed crossings had stopped because of it...

Listening to Heard holy moly she is a bad actor.
the only reason that Jonny Depp looks good in this trial is that he's just a really good actor /s

IMHO it sucks that she's borderline but Depp really went through a lot with this and he clearly wasn't in the best mental place either. I get that it's good for his career this is going on in front of cameras but it's odd to see someone's mental health broadcast to the world.

Just stay away boys, cause you ain't a psychiatrist. And if you are, then it's ethically wrong.

don't want to get into a debate abortion (please please please don't) but I find the idea of a trigger law regarding a judicial decision to be absurd. I get trigger laws regarding funding levels or certain falsifiable facts but it's not like the common law is some binary existence.

Depp got completely wrecked in the first trial so i dont think either are saints but honestly my level of giving a **** about either of them is the same with most celebrity gossip.

Neither has made a good film in ******* years so it's not like I have to cater my viewing habits and pick sides.

I mean with the stuff that has come to light to this trial a lot contradicts the narrative of that UK trial.
For example
The Charity Payments
Who actually abused who and how hard etc
Just a few.

It's clearly a toxic relationship, but you can also have imperfect victims. Whether that is enough to win this case IDK most likely not.
At least now the other side of the story is shone.

and I don't know if I would class a domestic violence case in the same thing as typical celebrity gossip most times these things never get to trial as it's settled.
But then again if your levels of giving a **** is that low I don't know is there really that much point in opening that discussion?

the guardian had a good article about how this is more like a divorce case that never happened than anything else? I forgot the libel laws in Virginia as soon as I took the bar there so I'm not gonna make a prediction on things but I think the case does have interesting legal implications. I'd say I usually agree with curd on my little caring for celebrity gossip but this case is an interesting intersection of the extremes of mental health and the law.

There other issues I have and that social media narrative supposedly I have to pick a side but most people are just watching curtailed clips. I also don't agree with televised trials and am pretty much glad there is no real effort to have them in the UK.

Basically unless you've watched the entire thing it would be pretty hard to have an informed opinion about it. Even then lawyers more likely than layman as the jury haven't been given exact instructions from the judge yet about the actual legal arguments they are supposed to decide upon.

For me I couldn't care less. Nothing more than two rich, famous people fighting over their reputations and making a public trial out if their divorce while greedy lawyers laugh behind their backs.

It's a civil matter between two actors and it's very hard for me to feel empathy for either. See it as a news item but seriously it is not that important to me when put into context of other world events.

The consequences of a toxic relationship being played out tv in America as Entertainment for some, but hardly level of OJ trial.

Depends which way you look at it I guess.
For me it's large scale version of what can happen throughout the "classes".

Someone makes something public in a very one sided way, suddenly one side rep is tarnished (Granted in hollywood rep seems to only be tarnished depending on who you are, someone like Depp will always have at the very least a loud minority of stans) and the other was getting put on charity boards and working with the UN human rights. The laundry was already aired just one persons.

It also imo begs the question is there such thing a perfect victim in a toxic relationship? and does there need to be in a civil lawsuit?

I found it interesting listening to the 2 doctor expert witnesses opinions and the different narratives used towards them. Interested to see Curry recalled after hearing the more qualified Hughes basically say her findings is wrong.
I understand the not liking this stuff as entertainment but I certainly find it interesting the tactics used in the court room as someone who closest thing to watching a court room before is suits. (Granted it's also made good background listening for work)

"See it as a news item but seriously it is not that important to me when put into context of other world events." - See it annoys me when people say this because at what point it the line exactly? Right wingers use it in a similar manner to defend the dumb **** people on their side of the political spectrum say. Hell in the grand scheme of things most things are pretty pointless to the average person.
