[2015 Six Nations] Ireland vs England (Round 3)

In tight carrying spaces Banahan would be our best winger. He has shown time and again that he always uses his size effectively, and he has a perfect kicking game.

I think Goode is probably the best short-term solution, however a bit of me wishes Lancaster had shown some faith in Watson as a potential future world class full back
I think the simple fact is against Scotland they are expecting Mike Brown to be fully recovered if not against France certainly. Going into the world cup I'm sure the plan is Brown at full-back, in the mean-time you've got issues at wing. I think they'd rather have Watson playing where he'll play if makes the grade come September so better to keep him there where he can learn international rugby where he'll play rather than shifting him about for the short-term.

Overall I'd say this is best medium-term option as Watson is unlikely to threaten Browns position at full-back until after the world cup.

Hey, if everyone agrees with me about left wing and right wing being different then there's no argument - Nowell is a right wing and May a left wing. And there are hardly any decent English-qualified left wings in the Premiership (Strettle is the most experienced, Benjamin I think has the most potential, and Varndell the best try-scoring record), so May is probably the best of a bad bunch.

I probably should have said had the most potential.

Well the discussion was more about whether it's easy to transition or not.

Do you really think it's beyond Nowell to move from 14 - 11? He seems more than comfortable at 13, so is clearly used to playing both sides of the field and has a decent understanding of how the 13/11/15 axis works.

I don't think it's an easy transition but I do think Nowell is one of the few guys who could do it well at this level. He's going to be playing against Bowe as well, so it'll be a real baptism of fire.

Banahan is good under a high ball, probably one of the best in the prem at that on the wing. He's also pretty strong. Wouldn't want him for creativity but if you are worried about kicks over the top, he is well suited to that.

However lets see how Nowell does, he was a bit shaky under high ball last year but nothing too serious.

But Watson should be seen as Brown's understudy for the World Cup ... unless Goode is ... ?

Just re-watching the France v England highlights from last year's match and Goode's splendid attempt at trying to tackle Huget in the lead up to France's 2nd try and then totally gassed by Fikou for France's winning try. I despair that Lancaster will pick him for the Ireland game. Never rated the guy at international level: just too slow.

Nowell may make the transition effectively at some point in his career, my point is that I wouldn't ask him to do this at club level first, as he has done at 13, and not away against Ireland in a potential Six Nations decider.

Also, Nowell seems to be much more comfortable stepping off his right, so why wouldn't you pick him on the right? I think Watson would make a better fist of playing left wing, but I would rather not move either of them and play a left-winger there.

I think we still might see Brown on the left wing, Lancaster has made stupider selections before.

Oh, and I missed out Banahan because he is obviously a Sonny Bill Williams-esque inside centre.

That's a fair point, and not one i would disagree with - i just don't really see our other options. May is not playing well. Yarde is, well, Yarde. So we either transition a right wing/fullback or continue with an under performing 11.

Maybe, can't say i've ever seen him struggling to step left to right, and he's a superb cover tackler comeing from right to left as well.

he's out, failed the GRTP.

Hehehe!

It's not his fault the ground caved in beneath his immense power.
