[2014 Mid-Year Tests] England

57 mins into the game, and I believe this is the first time that May gets the ball without being tied to the touchline. (It only happens because New Zealand had just kicked the ball back to England, allowing May to come a little in-field whilst there was a bit of a broken field.) Makes a great run:

Importantly thhough, look at the touch line - there is a man on the touchline. Tuilagi.

As for what the winger's role is in an attacking position, I suspect that it's in order to stretch the opposition backline as far as it will go, in order to give room to the primary strike runners: the 12, 13 and 15.

It's two things actually, the first is to stretch the defence, the second is to counter the New Zealand Drift defence - they like to puch you to the touch. The 13 & 15 can take the outside break (which is made easier by no cluster from the winger) and he can do so safe in the knowledge the winger will either take it off the line for him or keep him in field if it becomes a ruck .... on all these clips watch way May and Yarde do when the move breaks down close to the touchline..

Yep, we are in agreement. I just wanted to put up some thoughts as to why I think some might be expecting too much, when they want May and Yarde to be pulling off attacking moves. They are not there to do that.

In a lot of ways, this is part of the reason behind the downfall of Ashton. Under MJ, Ashton got a lot of credit for his ability to pop up anywhere and support anyone on their break. Stop him from being able to roam, and he quickly found himself out of his depth in what's mainly a defensive role - it's never going to be the ideal for a league convert. Since he's been dropped, I don't doubt that he's improved in a defensive capacity. But it still means that I don't think Ashton's primary skills in attack will ever fit in with England whilst under Lancaster.

I wonder whether we would be best just picking Monye on one wing. He's the best fit for Lancaster's vision of a winger.

I was in a quarry in Germany during the game and it taken me this long to find enough highlights reels to get a sense of how we did. Obviously my previously comments about how we were going to get royally done over and, paradoxically, that might have been a good thing in the long term have been proved horrendously wrong. I'm still not convinced about some of the selections that were made but to see a second/third string England side get within a whisker of a win or draw at Eden Park against a full strength All Black is a very positive thing.

I though our back row was the base from which the entire game was built. I think we should start the same three again this coming week and bench Wood. the 100% line out record shows that he isn't vital for us to have a solid set piece and the combination of Haskell, Robshaw and Morgan was immense. I think Hask make something like 13 tackles and four turnovers?

Obviously Burns proved pretty much all of wrong. Excellent kicking, solid defense and good distribution. Whatever Lancaster has done to raise has confidence has been incredible and it was really great to see a player answer his critics is the way me did. I'm not convinced that the game would have been any worse had Cips started, he looked good as well and while Burns was good I don't think there was anything he did that suggests his inclusions was the main factor in our performance.

Kyle Eastmond was also good and should start this weekend ahead of 36. I'm a big fan of Twelvetrees but even I have to admit that Eastmond both deserves some time in an England shirt and that his performance in the first test showed no signs of him being anything but a positive contributor to the team.

Finally I would keen Rob Webber in over Hartley to start. I was gutted not to see Ward involved but Webber was excellent and with Hartley coming back from injury we should reward Webber and let him keen the 2 jersey.

As for negatives. I'm still very disappointed in the selection of forwards on the bench, with the exception of Dave Attwood and maybe Matt Mullan. Gray, Thomas and Johnson are players that shouldn't be involved against the best team in the world unless we have no other choices. Ben Youngs was also a mess, but we really did have no other choice.

For this weekend I'd like to see:

1. Joe Marler, 2. Rob Webber, 3. Dave Wilson, 4. Joe Launchbury, 5.Courtney Lawes, 6. James Haskell, 7. Chris Robshaw, 8. Ben Morgan, 9. Danny Care, 10. Owen Farrell, 11. Jonny May, 12. Kyle Eastmond, 13. Manu Tuilagi, 14. Marland Yarde, 15. Mike Brown. 16. Matt Mullan/Alex Waller, 17. Kyle Sinckler, 18. Dylan Hartley, 19. Dave Attwood, 20. Tom Wood, 21. Lee Dickson, 22. Freddie Burns, 23. Ben Foden / Luther Burrell.

I think we'll actualy see Wood start, maybe with Hartley and Manu moved out onto the wing. But a man can dream eh?

Patchey - if you want to watch the full game, search for it on YouTube before it's taken down.

Yeah watching the full game now.

Mike Brown did have a bit of a shocker didn't he? Haven't finished the whole game yet (don't spoil the ending! :p) but I hope Pennell comes on with more than ten minutes. If your starting 15 is having a mare might as well give the new boy a bit more of a shot right.

Burns and Robshaw even more impressive than the highlights showed.

thought Brown turned it around in the second half - that might be because NZ changed their kicking tactics.

Yeah maybe, I just think he had one of those nights. Considering he's been virtually flawless for club and country all season I think we can give him a break though.

Really encouraging intent from England. Although Ben Youngs really is not good enough.

yeah, having argued his defence it's impossible to do any longer - he cost us the yellow and ultimatley the try with losing that simple ball that Retallick picked up.

Yeah, that is exactly what I thought. That and he distiribution wasn't great and he seemed shy when it came to bossing players around the fringe. Danny Care should be banned from grubber kicking in training this week! :O

I would have thought 15 would be better for him in terms of England opportunities. There is less competition for the 13 shirt, but the competition is expected to be around for years and years. Tuilagi could be our starting 13 for the long-term - perhaps even until 2023. Daly is not that much younger than Tuilagi too, so there's little chance of Daly succeeding Tuilagi. Foden is past his peak, Brown is peaking and may sustain it for one or two years, but I'd have thought Daly to be the natural successor to Brown after 2015. I know there's Watson and Nowell, but Daly is better imo.

But then, you do get more playmaking opportunities from 13, which may suit Daly more. And if Tuilagi is moved to the wing at some point, then that will leave an open position for Daly.

Loving that Itoje video. Can't wait to see him play for Sarries next year.

That article makes it sound like Paterson was already in NZ on holiday or something? He hasn't been flown out direct from England.

The Crusaders game is going to be an odd one.

Where do u reckon Itoje's long term position is? Does he lack the height to be a second row for England?

Could see him being either a 6 or lock - potentially both. Genuinely no idea where he'll end up.
I could potentially see him targeting the England 6 shirt:

4. Launchbury
5. Lawes
6. Itoje

6'5" is plenty tall enough for a lock - the 2-3" he might give up to other jumpers is easily made up for by his athleticism which is pretty next level.

He's a ****ing specimen. For a guy that is so long-levered he is very powerful and he's also ludicrously flexible.
I don't know how heavy he is going to end up being - but he carries his weight so easily, I reckon he could get to 120-125kg and still be faster that most other locks.

Well we have Hamilton, Hargreaves, Kruis, Botha, Smith in the locks and at 6 we have Brown, Wray, Kruis. I think he will be a 6 and i think he will be great for us.

He was in Auckland visiting family apparently I hope so because if Kitchener, Kruis, Stooke are viewed as behind Paterson, my head would explode.
