[2014 Mid-Year Tests] England

And also, you'd only be 1 injury away from having the development player in your match day squad completely prematurely and potentially risking your chances to win the game.

Considering the age of ford and farrell, why take a development player?
Take the next best option which is easily Cipriani.
Also Ford has like 15mins of test rugby under his belt so he's basically a devlopment player.

You vastly under estimate Danny's control as well. He's a far more rounded ten than he was at Wasps, Rebels and even is last season. His kicking game has been excellent, and for all the talk of Ford's control/kicking, Cipriani has outplayed him both times they've met this year. (That's not meant as a slight against Ford).

fair enough mate we'll have to agree to disagree, i did say it was subjective.

see my first post about Hodgson or someone similar...
Shame that he retired from England duty last year. We don't really have an old head English fly half anymore with Flood and Hodgson out of the picture, Cipriani would be my choice as 3rd fly half. Look how much better Farrell's game has come since working with Sexton. With cipriani Ford and Farrell can learn from him his vision and running game. And Cipriani can work with Farrell snr and jnr on his tackling, it isn't really that bad but it can always improve, with all 3 of them working together it can only help England as a collective. If you bring someone like Slade he is going to learn off Ford who isn't all that use too the Intl' set up, then you are carrying 2 rookies that are going down too New Zealand and are playing the first test. I personally would have Cipriani start against New Zealand and have Ford come on at 45-55 min mark.

Thinking about this more I definitely want cipriani above anyone else as my 3rd flyhalf simply because he has international experience and is the oldest head we have. It makes sense when I think about it like that.

On another pint to scare people what if Lancaster plays 12trees at 10 for the first test!

Lancaster likes to plan - and he has hinted heavily that Ford is starting the first test.

I know he's retired form international duty, but the landscape has changed flood has gone and I always got the impression he stopped because Lancaster said his chances were limited.

For the reasons laid out by just about everyone else, Cips is my choice for this tour, and will remain so barring a miraculous return to form from Burns. I like Slade, but would rather not expose him too early, I don't particularly like Myler, and I think that's just exhausted the list of even vaguely suitable fly-halfs for this jaunt.

hence "or someone similar"

I'm sure if asked nicely he'd come along....

So.....Andy Goode?
They're the only two experienced tens, if Lancaster doesn't pick foreign based players (Wilko, Flood.....Barkley).

I'm not so sure Charlie would. He's been injured a lot this season, which was one of reasons he retired from internationals - he was our 2nd choice 10 when he did as well, so it's not like we'll be enticing him back with the chance of being third choice.

I'd just flat out rather have Cipriani than Hodgson.

Don't tempt fate.

If people haven't seen, rumour is going round that Tigers have pulled out of signing Burns from Glos, leaving him clubless. From an England point of view, wanting him to regain some form, this is very much not good.

Well, at the risk of being pedantic, Flood is still English based. He doesn't leave Leicester for a few more weeks so he wouldn't be breaking protocol by taking him on tour.

Regardless of if Cipriani goes or not, or if he's our 3rd,4th or 5th choice I don't rate him as an international 10 and tearing up the premiership is very different to a cold wet New Zealand.

I just find it laughable that people are saying Cipriani is an experienced old head, he's got 7 caps... Ford has 2, and Farrell has 25. Cipriani is no more experienced than Ford or Farrell and taking him as an "old head" just isn't the case.

Slade is a decent long term prospect and the chances of Cipriani even being on the bench for the first test are slim to none - 12trees will cover 10 - might as well take Slade if we're not going to play the lad.

Surely Glos will try to sign him back as they don't have a fly half next season ? Maybe a move to Northampton as Myler is pretty poor if we are honest, there are a few clubs I could see him going too.

i think the lacks off fly-half's at gloucester is the reason why they signed laidlaw as i dont think he'll be scrum half with Jimmy Cowan or Tavis Knoyle in competition with. btw i do see Burns playing for Worcester or maybe Bristol since they're getting promoted (well i think they are)
