2012 IRB Junior World Championship

You need to worry about one man - no 12 (Jan Serfontein) for the Baby Boks, reminds me of a young Danie Gerber
and
the rest of a very well rounded and determined young Bok side

I will have to keep an eye on him. Gerber is a bit before my time - is there a modern day player you would compare his style of play to? :)

I've just seen that his midfield partner (and captain) William Small-Smith has been ruled out of the final with injury.

Fixed!

Yeah it's a pity he got injured because man he has some wheels on him and an eye for a gap!!

Jan Serfontein is a big guy, quick with a good step, solid hands and loves to tackle... Glad he's a Bulls player... :D

Danie Gerber is the best centre ever in my opinion - He had the power of a Frank Bunns and the flair (sidestep) of a Walter Little - combine the strengths of those and you got Danie Gerber

See here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHS10Kg9cHY and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTrghhVgBII and no 17 in this fine compilation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VY1RjEMQhE&feature=related

This new lad Jan Serfontein even have roughly the same look - http://www.zimbio.com/photos/Jan+Serfontein

yup, sad about William, class player and good leader, replaced by a lad who would have pushed him for a place but got injured early on

Great videos. I didn't realize he was playing into the 1990's - I remember the 1992 AB's v South Africa test at Ellis park, and I see he played in that match (so I have seen him play...).

Back to Serfontein.... It should be an interesting midfield battle, as arguably New Zealand's best player this tournament has been Jason Emery (though he will likely be playing at 13 rather than 12...). He probably lacks a bit of size, but he is incredibly elusive, and has some very slick handling skills. Given Small-Smith is out injured who do you think will start at centre for South Africa? I thought Paul Jordaan was more of a centre than a wing (where he has been playing all tournament), so I suppose he could move into centre with Rhule coming onto the wing...

Yeah I think Jordaan will move to centre, just hope he doesn't do any crappy things like in the Ireland match.

I saw this Morning that Jan Serfontein, Shaun Adendorff (SA) and JJ Hanrahan (Ire) have been nominated for player of the tournament.

Why only 3??

It does seem a small number. I think the bigger question is: why did they announce the nominees before the tournament is even over? Surely performances in the most important matches of the tournament should be taken into account for this award!

Why are did you try to take the Grammar award for 2013?

don't be so tough on grammar dude, you sound like Kaplan and Markgraaf at a tea party

Typical backs bias in the picks.

Also, Darwin is right, albeit while abusing the Queen's English.

Seriously hate the Bulls right now!! With the likes of Adendorff, Pollard, Serfontein and Small-Smith in their set up.

Token. Henderson and Furlong have been better than Hanrahan this year, just like Launchbury and both our props were better than George Ford last year.

Glad to see there actually is an Irish player but although he's played pretty well he wasn't our best performer.

Both teams have been named for the final. I'm very happy with the NZ team - two changes to the starting lineup, with Keresoma and Akhi named on the wings, replacing Ambrose Curtis and the injured Matt Proctor. Keresoma was initially named to start versus Wales, but didn't end up playing (minor injury?) so hopefully he will be fully fit for this game, as New Zealand really need his game breaking ability. Akhi is an interesting choice on the wing - he is usually a mid-field back, but has looked sharp this tournament. He probably lacks the pace to be a genuine wing , but is very powerful and has a great step on him. My only concern is on the bench, where we have no genuine halfback cover. I'm hoping this is simply because Kitto is injured, but we did go into the Fiji game with Eade covering halfback, and when Eade came on at halfback he certainly looked like a first-five trying (but failing) to play halfback!

A few changes for South Africa too: Paul Jordaan William Small-Smith are out, and have been by Raymond Rhule and Kobus van Wyk. Captain Wian Liebenburg returns at 6, replacing IRB Junior player of the year nominee Shaun Adendorff...

Going to be a cracker, let's hope the weather plays along, not optimistic though

Ireland beat France 18-7 to earn fifth place in the Junior world championship. Its been a very good tournament for our lads. If it wasnt for 20 mins or so lapse of concentration, who knows how far we could have got. Maybe it would have been us and New Zealand in the final;)

Wales are leading Argentina 19-3. Welsh scrum has been on top all game.
