Western Province v Lions

Ok guys, it's that time again. Jer1cho's pre-match summary, prediction, and interesting facts...

So, first up, let's have a look at both teams:

British & Irish Lions (vs Western Province):

15. Rob Kearney (Leinster/Ireland)
14. Tommy Bowe (Ospreys/Ireland)
13. Keith Earls (Munster/Ireland)
12. Riki Flutey (London Wasps/England)
11. Ugo Monye (Harlequins/England)
10. Stephen Jones (Scarlets/Wales)
9. Harry Ellis (Leicester Tigers/England)
8. Andy Powell (Cardiff Blues/Wales)
7. Martyn Williams (Cardiff Blues/Wales)
6. Joe Worsley (London Wasps/England)
5. Nathan Hines (Perpignan/Scotland)
4. Donncha O’Callaghan (Munster/Ireland)
3. Phil Vickery (London Wasps/England, captain)
2. Matthew Rees (Scarlets/Wales)
1. Andrew Sheridan (Sale Sharks/England)

Replacements

Ross Ford, Euan Murray, Simon Shaw, Tom Croft, Mike Blair, James Hook, Gordon D’Arcy

When looking at this Lions team, i think it's pretty obvious what the coaching staff are thinking. I think the main purpose of this team, is to make sure that the starters get in a last round of game time, and that some players in key positions have a last chance to pull off their best. The centre pair will need to step up this week, although i think it's a certainty that the best either of those two can do is guarantee a spot on the bench. A possible test winger combination has been chosen, so Monye and Bowe will need to make sure they score some tries and are solid on the afternoon.

Vickery has a mountain to climb, but perhaps he is not as unfit as he looks... Jones will be looking to put in another solid performance, as i am sure he knows that he has a very good chance of starting in the test side. The backrow is pretty strong, and Powell should put in a mammoth performance, even though i think his chances are slim at starting with Heaslip being in wonderful form. We should see all of the bench get a run, with Hook to come on fairly early.

It's a decent team, and if they get their structures right, should pull off a win.

Western Province:

15. Joe Pietersen
14. Tonderai Chavhanga
13. Morgan Newman
12. Peter Grant
11. Gcobani Bobo
10. Willem de Waal
9. Dewaldt Duvenage
8. Luke Watson (captain)
7. Duane Vermeulen
6. Pieter Louw
5. Anton van Zyl
4. Martin Muller
3. Brok Harris
2. Tiaan Liebenberg
1. Wicus Blaauw

Reserves: JD Moller, Hanyani Shimange, De Kock Steenkamp, Zandre Jordaan, Conrad Hoffmann, JJ Engelbrecht, Gio Aplon

A pretty solid team here too. The bolded players are the ones the Lions should aim to contain. Tonderai Chavhanga is blisteringly fast, and if he is given any space, he WILL score. Number 15 Joe Pieterson is also a very good attacking player, while Willem de Waal and Peter Grant will aim to keep structure at the back, and provide good ball for the wingers.

Then, on to everyones favorite, Luke Watson. A real pit-bull at the breakdown. He is the most loved/hated and controversial player in SA rugby. One thing that must be said though, is that he is a very VERY good player, and has a lot of skill around the breakdown. He will need to be watched, as turn-overs are his speciality. The other Province star is number 7 Duane Vermeulen. He is a talented youngster, and will definitely be a threat, and a solid player in defense. They do have the team to pull off an upset, but in the end, i think the Lions might just pip them.

It should be another close game, but i think the Lions will take it at the end.

So on to one of the most beautiful cities on Earth, Cape Town. Newlands is the venue, and Kick-off is at 15:00CAT.

Here are my interesting facts for the mother city:

- Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa.
- Cape Town is Africa's most popular destination for tourism
- The original name given to Table mountain by the first Khoi inhabitants was Hoeri 'kwaggo ("sea mountain").
- Cape Town was originally developed by the Dutch East India Company as a victualling (supply) station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East

Enjoy the game guys. :)

You know, I was going to play a game of putting the most amusing quotes during the Lions tour into my sig on a week by week basis... I may now however just put a quick link into this members profile.

Tell me, are you Phil Vickerys mum? That is the only way I could understand such unwarranted praise.[/b]
Sir, I feel that you are clouded by your idealistic vision of 'change' providing the answers to success in rugby. Elsewhere and frequently you have written off half the England old guard - remembering that many of whom have formed key components of our most successful side ever - in favour of mere pups (who've wholly struggled), and I feel that this is the main reason you are so quick to bombard poor Vickery. I do not feel my praise of him anywhere has been overboard, the chap is not as good as he was even in 2007, but I would certainly rank him above what is an essentially quite average player at this level like Euan Murray.[/b][/quote]

Being one of the best scrummaging props in the world is average? Vickery looks about as physically fit as Paul Gasgoine these days..

Lions will probably win this one but they are going to have to work hard for the victory.I see that there might be a 60% chance of rain on saturday afternoon so that may turn this game into a kicking contest(hope not!).

Lions will definitely have to watch out for Joe Pieterson, the WP fullback, he had two excellent games in the Super 14 and will hopefully have another one against the Lions on saturday.

The WP tight-five aren't the best around and I expect Brok Harris to get eaten up by Sheridan for lunch, Wicus Blaauw on the other hand might just put Vickery's granny panties into a twist :p .

Line-out will probably be dominated by the Lions as WP only have Anton van Zyl that might steal one line-out ball and hopefully win his own.

Then there is the back-row, Watson(and maybe Pieter Louw too) will at least win 5 turn-overs as Williams and Worsley will take forever to get to the break down point and Powell will be to busy standing around in the backline pretending to be a center, and while he is busy doing that Duane Vermeulen will be running circles around him.

Oh yes and then there is Keith Earls picked at 13 again for the Lions = not a good day for the Lions in the centers.

WP 23 - Lions 25 (hopefully it will be the other way around)

The only reason that Vickery is getting game time at the moment is due to Gerald Davies flexing his muscle over the Murray-photoshoot incident 3 weeks ago.[/b]
What's the photo shoot incident?

Not looking like the strongest Lions team possible, but they're just trying out combinations etc. still, and they can't play BOD in every match now can they? ;)

From what i've read/heard W.P is going to be tougher than the Sharks, so i would've thought that they'd've played wednesdays side agains WP and tomorrows against the sharks, but who am i to say
I'm HOPING for a Lions win (obv.) but if they do it'll be a very closely fought battle, and i'll be a little surprised if they make it

What's peoples opinions on Vick as captain? Despite being a sloppy player these days, i can't see anyone else in the XV that jumps out as a dif. captain

Northampton refused to release Murray for a sponsors photoshoot the Monday before they contested the ECC final. Gerald Davies promptly threw all of his toys out of the pram and proceeded to call Murray and Saints every name under the sun.

aw luke watson is captain, great

we will hopefully get some great comments from him, to follow up being sick on a springbok jersey

I was just thinking, doesn't Lee Byrne fill in at 13 for the 'spreys sometimes? It'd be worth giving him a run out...or rather, it would have been worth giving him a run out. Hopefully Earls does make a hash of this game like he did against the Royals, although I have considerably more faith in him after his last run out.

The Lions will probably continue to win in unconvincing fashion which they seem to do most of the time.

Ha, I'd rather win unconvincingly than lose unconvincingly. ^_^

EDIT: Interesting that Shane Williams has replaced the injured Mike Blair on the bench. Blair's tournament over; Geech not wanting to risk Phillips after Tuesday's game.

Gives Shane one final chance, even if it's one too many...

Ugh, awful start. So scrappy, so many kicks, so much ball-in-play time.

Ended by that runt Ellis who gives a penalty away. 3 - 0.

Lions penalty now. Offside from an up and under. Province doing well to block players from chasing up and unders... 3 - 3

Another Lions penalty. Dominating the scrum on the Province 22. Vickery doing well in the scrum to win that. 3 - 6. Off the post...
Oh dear me. The Province back three aren't collecting the high ball well at all. Territory galore for the BIL.

A further Lions penalty. Not rolling away at the ruck. HURRAH. A REFEREE FINALLY SPOTS IT. Jones' hardest kick so far. Shouldn't be too much of a problem...
Balls keeps falling off the tee. Happened for the WP penalty aswell. Strong wind... Just short due to the wind... BLOODY WIND. :(

Woah. Great kick Kearney.

^There there Mite... We know, we know.

Poor kick Jones... Nobody really chasing that kick, and whatsit not rolling away...

Sorry, I missed that last three pointer. What happened?

Williams and Jones doing their best to loose the game.[/b]
