Gatland confirmed there is no release clause in his contract that kicks in after the 6N or any clause at all.

You couldn't make this **** up.

That, along with the fact he seems defiant now and saying he's not resigning this is a big problem. I'd still like to see Gatland moved upstairs. ****, as this point I'd be over the moon if we sacked Nigel Walker and replaced him with Gats. I think Gats' ego would get in the way, though.

Maybe it's all bluster on Gatlands part and he's just playing some mind games with the WRU. You'd think 50 odd thousand turning up to watch another 50 plus point loss will surely force their hand, though. Break clause or no break clause.

To be fair it's been coming for a while. Getting to this point was clearly avoidable but the general malaise of Welsh rugby less so.

Its crazy to hear that we will have fielded a total of 52 different players this year but I've had an argument with my brother in law that we aren't as deep in quality everywhere. To some extent utility players make up for it but to some degree its more a case of we have fielded a few pedestrian players and/or though our 4th choice is not a huge drop off from the 1st its more a case of our 1st choice not being a worldie.

The short answer to this is yes of course they do. Whilst it will be expensive the WRU have the financial ability to release him and pay someone at that level. The harder question is who might want to take the job given the obvious systemic issues at most levels.

I actually think if we have to pay out Gatlands contract then it's a big ask that we then have to pay out someone else's contract so I think we'll be looking for people out of contract but this is all guesswork.

I swear I'm not trying to be dense here, but is £600k really an astronomical sum? I've heard this figure repeated ad nauseum and honestly, it's not that much money to me considering the importance of the role.

For example, Kolbe was on a £1m in France and he's a winger. A top-tier coach should at least be making what the top-paid winger is making.

I find it bizarre that a top lawyer, doctor, engineer here makes more than head coach of a £100m organization.

In Rugby it makes him one the highest paid coaches in the world. I think, for a time, he was the highest paid international coach at least.

A lot of doctors and lawyers aren't on £600k pa either. I know you said "top" and you're probably right, the best doctors/lawyers etc are on more than that but the bulk of those professions aren't on that kind of money.

Then if you were to expand to another sport for example football, Southgate is on £5 mill versus Kane on £20+ million.

I don't think you can tie a player's compensation to a coach's compensation.

That's shockingly low. I would expect the England Soccer coach to be on at least $15 million.

I get your point, but Im not sure it'd be good for anyone at the top of their career, or about to get a break to come here as the risk is massive.

I get the sense we'd be more likely to be targeting someone on the way up rather than someone currently at the top. Might end up being a bit like 00's Italy for a while.

I wondered if Dai Young might be a quiet outside bet. Someone who has links to the clubs etc.

I'd put Dai Young in the Tandy category to be honest. A bit uninspiring but I agree that we may target an up and comer like a ROG (though he would be expensive)

I still think Jospeh makes great sense. Roughly same age as Gatland 10 years ago when he was good, great experience, plays good rugby, used to dealing with a squad without great front 5 players, makes teams competitive and would be relatively cheap.
