Transfers 2015/16

Well, that, and the fact that Johnson has repeatedly stated it in newspaper articles, on Rugby Tonight, and by actually playing there. And Dai Young has stated that Johnson will be playing there.

But if Lindsay moving is what it takes to convince you, fair enough :D.

BJ Botha has signed a 6 month contract with Munster. I love the man dearly but he's on his way out.
We need him here though. Depth isn't great and well experience is very low in front row. Archer still has little injury ****les so can't take on all the workload himself. It has been recommended that we go after 1 of Leinster's lad so well guess it's wait and see. Hence it only being a 6 month contract and murmurs around the training paddock there is definitely something in the works.

haha... nah, I knew it was pretty much a fait accompli but didn't realise Dai had actually talked about it publicly. And yeah, Ash covered there but sometimes you can't separate necessity from intent, as at times we've really been left bereft of options with both Festy and Shervington have been out.
How do you feel about this move, Raggs?

Shame Lindsay never became the player we thought he could be, but I guess he's still young ish.

Ash approached Dai at the start of the season about moving to hooker, I'd guess when he played there it was less necessity and more letting him have a few run outs and seeing how he felt about making it permanent.

As to the move, which?

Ash to hooker could be inspired if he can do the basic hooking skills. I always felt our backrow was a little imbalanced, leaving us exposed at the breakdown, with Ash at 6. He's a fantastic player, but if he can make the move to 2, we keep his strengths and are able to boost our weaknesses.

Lindsay to Glaws, good luck to them, I like Lindsay, but he's never going to be a serious AP hooker, not even a bench option, unless his throwing improves, now maybe Glaws can make that happen, but I have no doubt that Lindsay and Wasps worked hard on it, but it's never happened for him. I actually wondered if he'd take the chance to move back (since I think he was briefly there) to flanker, in a sort of exchange with Ash. Seems like a waste of a very powerful guy, playing in a position where he simply can't master the basics, especially when it's such a specialised position.

Laurie Weeks is a stickler for the basics, bet he gets a decent spell of form out of him...

I agree with what you say about Lindsay but unfortunately I feel it goes deeper than that.
On paper, his physical attributes suggest a very powerful carrier with real impact. It doesn't happen because his technique is quite poor...he carriers upright, loses momentum in the tackle and even gets turned over quite often. His workrate can't seem to rival that of other hookers either.

I hope he comes good, but if not I just feel it's been something of a wasted career. Wasps have worked with Lindsay, I've been told (and I'd trust the source) that England were looking at him for a while and worked with him, Wasps have recently had Andy ***terall (who's basics were good) coaching part time, and this season working mostly with our hookers (I guess a lot with Ash). Some skills just aren't that easy to master if you don't do it at youth level, and not everyone is able to adapt easily.

I'd imagine all his time is spent on hooker basics, if he'd not spent time on that, he'd have been working on his workrate, breakdown and carrying. Perhaps he'd still have not got far, but it's frustrating to see him struggle for so long, especially now there's another player switching positions.

I don't think he moved to hooker until he was about 18, played all over the place before that - back row, wing and prop.

hahahahahahahaaaaa

Tom Lindsay (Wasps) -----> Gloucester Rugby.

Gloucester aiming high I see :p

But this pretty much confirms that Ashley Johnson will play Hooker next season.
You mean McAllister-Lindsay-PDJ doesn't make you a blubbering wreck, at the thought of facing them next season? ;)

So basically, when Hibbard gets tired, we can bring Hibbard #2 onto the field?
:p

Hibbards throwing is better than Lindsays :D. Tom Youngs is basically a good example of what was hoped for from Lindsay. Acceptable hooker skills, and fantastic around the park, but without those acceptable skills, they go nowhere.

Lindsay isn't fantastic around the field either though. He does nothing most of the time. Youngs on the other hand carries very well and, if tackle isn't quite the word, makes attackers trip over him very well indeed..

He does nothing most of the time.

It's true, but he is good when he does do stuff.

He'd be even better if he actually got the ball more often - I hope a change of scenery works for him, it seems as if he's been stuck in a rut for a couple of years.

It's all a conspiracy so Dai can play his son in the back row without dropping Johnson or Haskell!

Young the younger has certainly impressed.

For sure. My terrible banter aside, Wasps have a lot of depth in the back row. Hughes/Hask/Johnson make a hell of a starting set of loose forwards but behind them they have Young, Sam Jones (think he's had a lot of injuries this year?) and Guy Thompson. In that light Johnson playing hooker is a smart move if it comes off.

Sam Jones has serious issues with concussion, we then have Gus Jones, who's received ringing endorsements from our ex academy coach, and potentially one or two others.
