The Official Sonny Bill Williams Thread

Firstly it is on a different topic about SBW and therefore I made a new thread; is that a problem? Similar to other members making new threads when they find something interesting, thought that they the point of a forum.
Secondly he is admitting now that he may stay in New Zealand because he could land a big money deal with Adidas. It seems that with All Blacks jersey has nothing to do with his decision in staying. It annoys me that regular All Blacks like Nonu, Smith, Thorn etc. do not get these deals as are they are committed to NZ. I predict that the NZRU nudged Adidas in the ribs to help them make the decision to ask SBW to join them.

Carter and McCaw are on a same deal with Adidas. Also he has a huge market-ability so for companies such as Adidas he will sell products for them. SBW has a high marketability which will make companies go after him with lucrative deals. If you were in SBW boots you would take the deals and get the money because you don't know what's round the corner.

What's wrong with being all about the money. Sure, when you're in the clubhouse, or in the training ground, or on the field your club comes 1st. But when you go home and sit down with your girlfriend, or think about your post 30 life, or decide you want kids, or whatever makes up the biggest portion of your life, your decisions are going to be economic or happiness based. There isn't anything wrong with that.

Most of us are guilty of wanting money, most are in need others in greed. Thats how we do it in the"civilised" world.

I went to a Boxing forum to get some thoughts about this debate on SBW/Hatton and was quite surprised. Although the majority of the responses were in favour of Hatton there was the odd couple that thought otherwise and shared valid reasons other than the obvious and that was the surprising part I thought Hatton would be everyones choice but apparently not.

Others thought it was a joke thread and understandably so. It got to the point where my thread got erased lol. I did however do another thread for the international forum but it wasnt really that popular heres the link for those interested...

Yes Hatton was the choice on both threads I made (not surprising) but now I dont feel happy, vindicated. I kind of feel stupid.

Frank I must admit you did get me frusterated reading your posts even making me smash the enter key to send one of my responses. Ive never been so frusterated from reading of a computer screen. I normally enjoy a good banter but this one was different. Anyway the Super Rugby seasons coming up and I look forward to your views. Lets squash this and move on please.

Gavin, what you have to realize is that it's not SBW's fault. I agree that it's really dumb for Adidas to sign someone who isn't half the player of Lomu, Carter and McCaw, while great players like Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Brad Thorn, Kevin Mealamu, Tony Woodcock, Ali Williams and Cory Jane won't be earning half as much, despite being more loyal to NZ rugby. But if you are offered a crap load of cash, you're going to often take it, whether you deserve it is much as others or not. It really is misplaced aggression towards SBW, he can come accross as a bit arrogant in some of his behavior, but that's because there are idiots out there like Adidas and the NZRU who are willing to spoil him.

Oh get a life Gavin, this is the Professional Era now. The Corinthian Era ended 16 years ago; time to move on.

I promise you that if Carter wasn't being paid, he would be in Europe right now plying his trade; so would most All Blacks. Yes, the Black Jersey is a big draw card for players, but it is not the be all and end all. Its a tipping point, a big factor that players will take into account when considering an offer from Europe or Japan.

Good on SBW for taking what he can get. If I were a Professional Sportsman in his position with his undoubted marketability and talent, I would be doing everything I could to maximise my income within the limit of my desire to play international sport for my country, and set myself and my family up for life. Professional sportsmen only have a limited earning lifetime in their chosen profession. They need to make the most of it.

I for one will be happy to see SBW stay on after the RWC and play some more seasons with the All Blacks, and I'm quite happy for Adidas to pay for it

I don't blame him, SBW is a brand, sell it!
It will be up to SBW to live up to the hype and expectation, if his rugby fizzles out then his deals will fizzle out soon after.

I can only imagine the state of your keyboard now after you get mad at it :P

Another thing similar between Ali and Williams -

He's converted from a rugby league teen sensation into an All Black juggernaut, and along the way become a promising heavyweight boxer.
But Sonny Bill Williams has also made a spiritual conversion to Islam.
While rumours of the 25-year-old sporting superstar's religious beliefs have circulated for some time, the Herald on Sunday can reveal he made the leap of faith two years ago.
He has since become the first Muslim to wear the All Black jersey, and requested halal food during the Northern Hemisphere tour last year.
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when followers are forbidden from eating between dawn and sunset, falls in August this year - when the All Blacks play three Tri Nations matches. It is during the final build-up to the Rugby World Cup.
Williams regularly attends Friday prayer sessions at a Christchurch mosque, according to friends.
Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand first vice-president Javed Khan said his allegiance was commonly known among the Muslim community.
"He is practising the religion and he is a great role model for the youngsters. We will pray to Allah that he will win the World Cup for us. Everyone talks about it you know. The Muslim community, everyone knows everyone, you know."
Williams' manager Khoder Nasser and mentor, league star and boxer Anthony Mundine, are both Muslims, as is his brother Johnny, who lives with him in Christchurch.
This YouTube footage appears to show Williams performing a Muslim prayer in the changing room before his debut for Canterbury against Bay of Plenty in the ITM Cup last year (first 5 seconds only):
<IFRAME title="YouTube video player" height=300 src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ns5PpL8Ne4o" frameBorder=0 width=500 allowfullscreen></IFRAME>
Williams' friend Tairek Smith said he had regularly prayed with the 1.91m, 108kg second five-eighth since he embraced the Sunni branch of Islam during a ceremony at the Regent's Park mosque in Sydney's western suburbs in 2008, where former Canterbury Bulldogs teammate Hazem El Masri attends.
All Black manager Darren Shand said the star's religious beliefs had a "minimal" impact on the team.
He said: "He has talked to us about his dietary needs and we do make some concessions there. We request halal beef and so on but he doesn't make a big deal of it.
"We always leave players' religious affiliations and a lot of those holistic things outside of the game. That's their personal life and they decide what they do."
When asked if his faith clashed with the All Blacks' philosophy for encouraging players to be free thinking and self reliant, Shand said Williams was a "sponge" for information.
"That's why he is so good at all the sports he has been involved in. He just ticks all the boxes. He wants to be the best."
Since converting to Islam, Williams has put a string of embarrassing alcohol-related incidents behind him.
He is in training for the Crusaders' Super Rugby campaign and was unavailable for comment.

Anyone else thinking SBW is being manipulated by Mundine?

I can't say I blame SBW for taking an endorsement deal. Gavin was right that he is an arse. TBH, I don't think SBW is all about the money. If he was all about the money he wouldn't be here. The NZRU plus endorsements will not pay him anywhere near what he could get in the UK. He's a ll about the glory. I think he believe that the world cup will be a cool experience, something which is great to be a part of. He wants to be a part of a winning All Blacks team and then he can jet off somewhere else. The problem for SBW will be that no one will remember him as a great in any sport. He left league when he was 24(?) so he won't be a great there, you can't be a great playing two seasons for Toulon, you can't be a great All Blacks if you only play 20 tests (in this era) and you can't be a great boxer if you're doing it part time.
