The Official Sonny Bill Williams Thread

He does prove what he's worth, he played well during the EOYT, now he's doing quiete well in the S15 and if he wins the WC with NZ he actually won everything there is to win in NZ this year. ( Guessing the Crusaders will win the S15).

He is still young and looking for new challeneges.

Well fella. I am a bit old fashioned eg: I think that Ireland should go back to the days it was like under DEV and Lynch. And I would be discuted if a Muslim put on the Ireland Jersey and went out there reprenting this glorious nation of Christian heritage. He is a very good player(maybe the best around expet Carter) but I would not like him playing for my country. That's it.

Reading the thread, and then this little gem popped up. Nice it got such a responce.

I don't care if he is Muslim or not. He has not openly rejected my religion (that Olyy is god), why should I object to his?

Apparently SBW is now NZs number 7 ranked boxer. Thats pretty cool on one hand, and a depressing indictment on NZ boxing on the other

Due to some number fudging system, similar to world cup matched count for double the number of ranking points in test rugby perhaps?

Dave Chappelle is Islamic does that make him any less funny.

No. The way he fancies himself as Richard Pryor but comes off as a poor mans Eddie Murphy is what makes him less funny.

Due to boxing being **** in NZ more probably. That being said Tua should have been given another ***le shot by now..

Number 7...that is pretty grim.

David Tua should be, but probably won't be, untill at least next year. He will need to beat Monty Barrett and maybe a top 10 challenger for him to be given his shot (although I think he is still ranked 3rd in the world). The problem is that there just hasn't been enough interest generated by him for a big PPV to be run. There was talks of him vs the anciant Holyfied, which probaby would go some way to help gain interest, but the money Holyfield wants is more than a majority of top 10 boxers. I think the only way we'll see him given a shot, will be if he knocks out his next two opponents, as the general opinion is that he has lost it.

Is SBW actually any good at boxing? I would of thought any semi-pro boxer could take him down.

Or does his athletic ability really work that much in his favor?

Correct, not fought anyone of any real threat to him.

Thats a relief, there is still hope for NZ boxing :D

I hope he eventually decides to pick a fight with a serious boxer. Especially if he is ranked #7 in his division.

52-3 43 KOs. 1 ***le shot in his career.
This is the reason why i dont like boxing, the whole system is so convoluted.

Completely agree!!! Tua has an incredible record, yet struggled to get the fights he deserved...

He's ok for a guy whos learnt late in life. He's fought guys that look like they too have learnt late in their lives. Bottom line, no he is not that good of a boxer, maybe if he started out as a youngster fighting a lot of amateur fights he might've been something.

Yes his atheletisicm works in his favour, although his muscle mass is too much for his boxing, overall...yes his athletic ability helps him out in the ring.

What's worse it the boxers who he has beaten. Hasim Rahman (Former WBC, IBF and IBO champion), John Ruiz (Two time WBA World Heavyweight Champion), Michael Moorer (Former IBF and two time WBA World Heavyweight champion and WBA Light Heavyweight Champion), Oleg Maskaev (WBC Heavyweight Chamption) and he has a better boxing record than all of them.

Tua was terrible against Lennox Lewis mind. But his record speaks for himself. Pity about the problems with his manager and coach which has ultimately cost himself a chance of a world belt shot.

Yeah, although it wasn't suprising seeing as he is about 6 inches shorter. Mike Tyson got K.O'd by him in the 8th round, and he's a similar type of fighter with similar height and reach disadvantages, so I think against a different fighter, he would have done better. Tua never got knocked down by Lewis, Tyson got knocked out.

Tyson was also sadly 15 years past his prime and washed up. Tyson without Kevin Rooney is like New Zealand without Mccaw and Carter, they can still win but the differences are obvious.

word!

I do not like SBW he reflects what this beautiful game nwith strong values is becoming. His conversion to Islam, constant attention seeking do not impress me. He is one of many other players who re taking over the game and destroying it. I enjoy more watching John Hayes carriyng the ball, takling and giving everthing than a flashy, cocky and talented player play for his own pride and money.

Who ever told you that Sonny Bill was flashy, cocky or attention seeking.
He's actually the complete opposite.
Sonny Bill is very quietly spoken and humble and always trying to deflect any praise onto his teammates. He has always been respectful and if anything tries to avoid the limelight which is thrust upon him constantly.
His next boxing fight has all proceeds going to the Chch Earthquake Fund and he is giving $100,000 of his own money as well...

If your gonna rundown the character of a young man who came from nothing and made his way to the top - at least find some semblance of truth to base your rant on.
<_<

Ye true, but to be fair he stayed the full course the fight was boring mind. I watched it the other day on youtube.
