The Movie Thread

Sinister gave me a good few scares but the hype it's getting is probably enhanced due to it being of the better mainstream horrors. A casual movie goer wouldn't waste time looking through endless lists of what good horrors are out there. Even so, it scared me good and was a fun watch. I was holding my gf throughout instead of the other way round lol but then again I'm a big pussy when it comes to horrors even though their my fav genre. I watched insidious 2 tonight and agree it wasn't great. Although the ending makes u wonder what's going to happen in the 3rd.

:D that's one lucky gf !!
cool man. Well, I'm more of the intellectual type (as you can tell from my subtle humor or avatar for e.g.), and I like my horror deep. But wtf are the odds of a true horror masterpiece coming out...of Hollywood especially...we just like to turn the lights off and put the volume high enough so that we get a bit of a thrill, and if there's an okay story and development there, I'll take it. But they're really for fun, disposable if you will..
Most oooh twists you'll see in movies nowadays are shytty, rehashed ideas and everybody around is like "ohhhhh !!........" like it's smart, but it's totally crap. It's just about buying into the whole thing and hope it's not TOO stupid.

And uhh Insidious 2 ? the ending made me wonder where the remote control was so I could shut the damn media-player. yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....

???......

....aaaaawn.

This could possibly be the best 'worst' movie of the year. Not seen it yet, but it looks like it has potential! (I watched 'A good day to die hard' earlier, and have to admit ANYthing is going to look good after that).

EDIT: yeah that spider thing looks gooood, thx for posting. But it's a parody movie, not really a good bad movie, though I see what you mean...

I'm going to see it again with a bunch of friends Febuary 1st and maybe New Years Day if I can ifnd a screening in Auckland (only plays first day of the month). I think it will be my 7th or 8th time seeing it. Best movie experience I've ever had and continues to get better.

ah ha ha ha !....water store remark !

Hey just saw Sinister after all...half assed, not a good horror. Entertaining, somewhat, but not a good horror...check it out, Ethan Hawke plays very well in it, great 1st hour, then it just wanders about...loses intensity..

"Keep your STUPID comments in your pocket !.."

Watching 'Pretty Woman'. Call me whatever you want, it's a bloody great movie.

The Hunger games 2: didn't see part one and not really sure what's the hype about.

The Thing (2011). Remake of the 82 Carpenter classic. Don't bother, decent but still a waste of time if you saw the original...cute lead actress, damn them Southern (American) girls are fine.

Watched 'Oz the great and powerful'. Cracking film, highly entertaining and lots of great 'references' to other movies/The Wizard of OZ.

Elysium....meh, not sure if they wanted to make a social commentary sci-fi film or a straight action movie, ended up doing neither very well, still watchable particularly the first half hour and the final 15 minutes. I give it a 6/10.

After Earth....dreadful, horrible acting, no one involved seemed to care, bland plot along with bizzaro thinly veiled Scientology references. Only given a tiny reprieve by me because the visual department worked their butts off to at least make the effects look decent. 2.5/10 (maybe higher for kids like a 4 perhaps).

Oh, also watched 'Star Trek - Into Darkness'.
Not what I expected, but really enjoyable. Incredible Special Effects, and the cast are really growing into their roles (Quinto is an excellent Spock, no matter what Sheldon Cooper says ;) )

I've just watched The Enemy Below after weeks of trying to hunt down a copy... It's about an American destroyer and a German U-boat each trying to outwit the other. Surprisingly optimistic tone but I enjoyed it.

12 Years a Slave is absolutely phenomenal. I saw it at a preview the other week and am still blown away by just how good it is. It's the kind of film everyone needs to watch at some point in their lifetime; not just sublimely made, brilliantly acted and impossibly well directed, but it's an important story in our recent history that deserves to be told. Please make a point of seeing it as soon as possible.

None of what I have just said goes for American Hustle. A vaguely entertaining but largely vacuous experience.

Very much looking forward to watching this.

A few I've watched recently:

Gravity. Saw this a few weeks ago. First film where 3D makes real sense (to me at least), basically because they didn't take it too far. The acting was top notch, and I enjoyed the story line. Very little I can criticise tbh. It was quite an exciting experience for me, as I got to see my brothers name in the credits (he designed and digitally modelled part of the space station, one of the ships, and some of the tools). 9/10.

Pacific Rim. A little late watching this, but I've gotta be honest I really enjoyed it. It had the potential to be another run of the mill action flick, but instead it ended up being totally awesome, and huge fun (transformers eat your heart out). 8/10.

Rush. Been looking forward to seeing this for a year or so, and I wasn't disappointed. One of the best racing films to date imo. 9/10

Elysium. Just watched this tonight, and it's OK. I wouldn't say there's anything new in this film, but it does most of it pretty well. I think it had the potential to be so much better though as Little_Guy commented above. I suppose it's very much like District 9 in that regard, trying to mix social commentary (particularly South African social commentary) with action. Personally I would have preferred it if they left out 90% of the action, but maybe that's just me. 6/10.

Grown Ups 2. I quite enjoyed the first Grown Ups film as a throw away comedy. However Grown Ups 2 just tries way too hard to be funny imo. 3/10.

Fast And Furious 6. This series has had its ups and downs for me. At the age I was at the time, I loved the original, and some of the other since have been ok (not Tokyo Drift). This is carrying on from the last movie, where the cars have taken a little bit of a back seat to the main plot. I'm still a little undecided how I feel about the completely over the top action sequences, they aren't usually something I like too much, but I think they just about pull it off here. 7/10.

After Earth. I usually love everything Will Smith is in, I think he's a great actor, but this was a slight lowpoint for him imo. Jayden is living off his dad, and this role shows that more than any other. The premise was interesting, but they didn't do too much with it imo. Visually it was good, so that redeems it somewhat. 4/10.

The Wolverine. I've always quite enjoyed the X-Men series, and Wolverine in particular. I think Hugh Jackman fits the role well. I am starting to question when enough is enough though, it's dragging on a little now I feel. If this film was released 5 years ago, I think I would have given it a good score, but I'm getting a little bored of X-Men now so it's dropped a couple of points because of that. 5/10.

This is the end. Plenty of comedy stars packed into this one. It started off quite promisingly, with some very funny scenes early on (the scenes involving Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Watson were good). Overall, it certainly kept me entertained. 6/10

The Internship. Wasn't expecting much from this film, but it was OK. Not great, but it had its funny moments. The stereotypical arrogant guy was maybe a little much, and too generic for my taste. 6/10.

Man Of Steel. I'm really not sure about this movie, it split me in two really. Some of the action sequences were great, with some stunning visual effects, and the kind of destruction that hasn't been seen on film before. However I found some of it a little hard to follow at times. I also thought they tried to pack too much into the move, doing the whole origins thing as well as a big enemy. They didn't leave any time to develop some of the characters, such as one of the daily planet workers who get's trapped, we're supposed to feel attached to her? We hadn't even seen her before! 6/10, 7 at a push.

World War Z. Always been a fan of zombie movies, and I enjoyed this too. I loved some of the special effects, with the hoards of zombies crashing through cities, throwing themselves off rooftops and scaling walls. 8/10.

Lone Survivor: 2/10. I didn't know Mark Wahlberg was still trying to be an actor.
Berberian Sound Studio: 5/10. I dunno, I liked the dark feel of it, I just felt it was a bit limited. I feel as if they could have explored his spiral down a bit more. Scene was set but never took off.
Compliance: 3/10. Acting was OK, but it failed to really bring me in. Obv based off a true story which limits it, but they might have tried to make it seem too dramatic, with the ending seemingly being a letdown. Tough material to translate to a movie.
Intouchables: 7/10. OK, story was a bit typical, but the acting was top notch. The leads worked well together, they seemed a natural duo working together. They looked comfortable around each other, and the supporting actors worked off it superbly. Excellent cinematography as well, joy to watch for that alone.
Simon Killer: 7/10. Great performance from Corbet, seemed unhinged without going overboard. Very bleak and disturbing without getting gruesome (for the most part), letting the situations do the talking. Didn't really have a main plot, but there was enough going on to keep your attention.
The Worlds End: 5/10. Didn't really do it for me. Can't explain it, but it didn't really have the 'feel' of SotD and HF. Missing some of the subtleties.
Side Effects: 6/10. Jude Law was solid, the the rest were pretty bland. Story was interesting but nothing exceptional.
Iceman: 5/10. I wanted to like this, I really did. Feels liked they were very constrained making this. Michael Shannon is an excellent actor, but not allowed to shine. The movie really cold have gone deeper into Kuklinski's life. I felt as if they skipped around too much, not allowing any scenario to develop. Hard to get grounded. Some criticised Zodiac for being too long, but this is a story that certainly could fill that timeslot without boring audiences.
Antichrist: 2/10. Lars von Trier. He tried, he failed.

Lone Survivor: 2/10. I didn't know Mark Wahlberg was still trying to be an actor.

I do quite dislike him. He works for big budget Hollywood shhit, but he couldn't act out a calm, gathered role to save his life.
