The Movie Thread

Just got on that bandwagon and went to see avatar myself. Complete with a complimentary stupid pair of glasses no less.

Initially I was sceptical about it (***anic put me off Cameroon), but being honest I was blown away. The story was well told and engaging, the acting (when not CG) was superb and perfectly cast, the characters were excellently cast suitably cheesy enough to make the story itself seem plausible, and of course the CG effect were some of the best I've ever seen - Especially the early segments during the night-time stroll through the woods.

I'm not to sure the 3D was necessary however. The computer screens all looked out of place and seemed to be floating above the picture during the human segments.

And I'm also wondering if it's wrong to find an 8 foot tall smurf with big ***s hot...

:ninj:

Most of the smurfs movements was based on motion caption footage of the actors portraying them, you can always just say you got the hots for the actress playing Neyteri. It's the same woman who played Uhura in Star Trek. And she was pretty!

Only saw one 3D film so far (the third Ice Age) didn't think it added much to it and like you say, things didn't seem to blend well (even though there is only CGI in those) so I figured the technology will probably improve, I'll try it out in a few years.

Just remembered the one thing that kept distracting me, the repetition of that "I see you" phrase. The urge to complete it with "shaking that ass" was very difficult to resist at times.

That'd be "... there baby, shaking that ass". Still made me laugh.

I also saw Avatar yesterday, but in 3D. The effects are unbelievable, but the story is cliché and the characters are all typical. 5/10.[/b]

Youre a film student or something, arent you?

LOL! I'm not too sharp today, but yeah we finally got it.

Most recent film I saw was The Lovely Bones. I found the story affecting and Mark Wahlbergs character very easy to identify with, although it was a mixed performance from him. Most times brilliant, sometimes a little average. Stanley Tucci was incredibly good for the most part also, I seriously wanted to do his Mr Harvey in. The girl who played Suzy was also solid for such a young performer, along with the girl who played her sister. Susan Sarandon seemed a little cliched and emotionless in her role, maybe it was the part though. The mother character was also a little bit of a void really.

Still I have a daughter and couldn't help but find some of this a little too worrying an idea for a dad already scared to let his little buddy out of his sight. I'll give it 8/10.

No, just a pretentious **** and an avid lover of movies.

Though I'd love to take a Film Studies course at some point in the future.

The Seventh Seal. - 9.5/10. Interesting film about death and the afterlife, but it's also quite funny, in a cynical sort of way, and heartwarming in places.

I found The Seventh Seal overrated really. I didn't emotionally connect with any charcter in the film, found it too pondering and contemplative without giving any real philosophical response to it's own questions. Bergman achieved something with this film in the 50's as there wasn't much speaking to people about the apparently fruitless struggle of life over death.

Now it's just mostly old hat that some film students rave about to isolate themselves into the catagory of experts.

I give it a 6/10 now and can imagine that it would've deserved a 8.5/10 in it's day.

I agree on the emotional front. It was hard to connect with the characters, but not hard to connect with the theme - which everybody, I think, can relate to.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean that it failed to answer the questions it raised?

I mean that it spent far too much time on slowly raising questions and conundrums about the fears all people have when they have an existential crisis that it never really provided much in the way of theories or potential answers. We all know we are going to die, many have a crisis of faith or feel a futility in living, but this film basically just re-informed us of what we already know.

I didn't hate it, just felt like it was a little devoid of hope which is an important quality to me. It just screamed "the writings on the wall" to me. Which is kind of redundant as most of us have twigged to that.

Wow, who knew that Death from Bill and Ted's most excellent adventure went on to have a career after that most epic of films. Might go watch that actually. Thanks for the suggestion Speedy!

Lulz, somebody else made that connection for me earlier. Death is awesome.

Grim Reaper: I believe Colonel Mustard did it in the study with the candlestick.
Dead Bill: Sorry, death, you lose! It was Professor Plum!
Grim Reaper: I said Plum!
Dead Ted: No way! You said Mustard! Can we go back now?
Grim Reaper: Uh, best three out of five!
Dead Ted: I don't believe this guy!

I'm studying Theatre, Literature and Film sciences (dropped German) and RC is right, my class is filled with pretentious assholes, it's a good example of what you don't want to be. Haven't had any film-classes yet, those start in February.

I watched Spaceballs last night when I got home.
