The Movie Thread

I've just watched The Killers - Live From The Royal Albert Hall. This should be mentioned in both this (video) thread and the what am I currently listening to one. It is an incredible concert. In terms of production, photography, sound editing, vocal performance and atmosphere. With the right big screen LCD tv (or Plasma) and a great sound system, it becomes almost like being there. This should go down as one of the top 20 or so concert films of all time.

These guys are a band that aren't necessarily in my top 5 bands, but somewhere further down the list of bands that I enjoy, so bias isn't part of my reasoning for claiming this is a must see.

First time I have a band live, yet this concert film is actually better. Even putting my sceptical hat on I still give this a solid 8.5/10. Check it out.

I just watched Paranormal Activity. Creepy as ****! Slept with one eye open after that one... Scariest movie i have seen i reckon.

The Darjeeling Limited.

Has poor pacing for the first half but picks up greatly for the second. It's a story about three brothers trying to become closer during a journey through India to see their mother. It's more complex than that, though that's the gist of it. The ending is lovely, as it feels that the movie is building up to that point.

I love the way the camera is moved in an almost snarky, deadpan way, to convey some form of humour, and the repetition of certain lines to comedic, or emotional, effect is warming. In its humour it feels like a Coen Brothers movie, just not as good. 7/10

I'm watching it now, it's very good. I tend to agree with you about The Killers, who seem to be a "2 good song per album" band. One or two massive its a la Mr. Brightside Human, Somebody told me etc. I saw their set at Glastonbury a few years back and actually thought it was rubbish. This concert is good but I prefer Green Day's Bullet In A Bible in terms of Gig DVD's

Yeah I've seen some of their other live stuff and even the bonus live stuff on the Royal Albert Hall dvd. Most of it seems really flat. This one really grew on me with repeat viewings, Green Day's BIAB is another that I'd put in the top dvd concerts of all time too, kicking ass in terms of overall sound production.

It'd be an interesting thread, top concert dvds of all time wouldn't it?

Dial M For Murder.

Hitchcock just doesn't make a bad movie. Ray Millard as the man who wants his wife murdered is very good. His character, Tony, is devious, very clever and his plans are brilliant. Tony's scheme is genius, and allows for a very tense movie. The dialogue is constantly outstanding. It never really stops being interesting, though there is a lot of information to take in. I love the dramatic irony used in the latter scenes. Added humour is never a downer. I didn't like the use of music in some of the scenes though. It didn't feel appropriate. 9/10

Hardly remember seeing it, should watch it again since every time I hear the plot-line I get stuck with a Gwyneth Paltrow film.

Watched Pan's Labyrinth for the first time a while back, really should see it again, was fascinated by it.

I watched Inglorious Basterds last night mainly based on the good reviews it got.

The first hour was good but the last 30-40 mins I didn't enjoy at all, not sure exactly why but I had a sudden urge to turn it off and watch something else.

Plus points. Pitt is very good in it, good to see a war film that the actors speak in French and German, adds a dose of reality to it. The soundtrack is good too but sadly those points don't make it a good film in my book. 5/10

You should see it again.

And that confusion may come from the fact that the Gwyneth Paltrow film, A Perfect Murder, is a remake of Dial M For Murder. :p

It didn't work for everyone but it kicked my sorry arse out of the cinema and down the street. Who would have thought a static camera could have been so effective. First time I've been in an Aussie cinema where the audience have screamed throughout the movie and people got up and walked out during the intense parts. Still slightly freaked to be honest.

Zombieland - lags a bit in the middle but got some laughs out of it :) Not as good as Shaun of the Dead imho

I know, I remember that film better than the original, which bothers me :p

Possibly watching Avatar tomorrow, not sure yet, getting 8 people to decide what to do on a Friday evening requires more skills than I have at the moment XD

Two Kubrick movies:

Spartacus - 9/10.

Dr Strangelove - 10/10. Peter Sellers is a GOD.

All I could see was sexual activity haha. So next time I watch it I'll take my perv eyes off and try and put some serious ones on because I know some people that said they walked out of the theatre crying hahaha. So it must of freaked the hell out of them.

The Ring.

I saw Ringu ages ago, got freaked by THE MOMENT but thought it was pretty dull overall and expected a hollywood knock off to be even worse. But no - excellent film. Just behind Blair Witch Project for creepiness. Problem is that once you've seen the girl coming out of the screen, you've seen it.

Didn't get the moment when the kid looks up from under the umbrella. Is that his father? And maybe the horse death was a bit over the top.

Watched Avatar in 3-D yesterday. Wow.

The story is a cliche, and if anyone remembers the animated film 'Fern Gully', then you will see the similarities. It's pretty much the EXACT story (Except of course the Avatar not being him physically.)

Otherwise, the visuals are truly the next step in film. Never seen anything like it. It's not ground-breaking 3-D, but it is the way this film needs to be watched. I also found the music a little corny in a lot of places. They went beauty and the Beast a little too much i think.

It's a must-see though, and it sticks with you for a while. 9/10

It really is. Probably my favourite horror of the decade. The closet scene, though brief, scared the hell out of me.

Avoid the sequel.

The Ring 2, (Us version), was a successful film. Made a lot more than it cost and got plenty of bums on seats. Most of the film was very good. Some parts really let it down. Most notably, the ending and a million full on, king-sized plot holes. It's so weird and just derailing, that no-one has tried to make a third. It's not because there is no japanese third movie to copy, as the americans will make their own up for the money. The question is really "what the hell do you do with the story now after this"?

(Goes to wikipedia. Only to return and discover that they are making a third one now, lol).

Fast pace up to about 50 mins, but I was thinking how do they fill the next hour on day 7? The contrast in the parent-child situations kept it bubbling.

Mind you, horror is mostly about the music and sound effects. Maybe they just did a better job on that than the japanese original.
