The Movie Thread

It's not a film as such but I've just watched Jeff Waynes Musical Version of The War of the Worlds live.

For those of you who don't know it it's a musical adaptation of the classic novel. Released in the 70's and it scared the hell out of me when I first heard it, it recentley went on tour providing a live show with a full band and singers including Justin Hayward and Russell Watson. It also features an anitamted face of Richard Burton which doesn't look natural but I think it ties in well with the storyline.

Forever Autumn
The Spirit of Man

Two of the best bits imo

Vertigo.

The last forty or so minutes moved this film up from excellent to masterpiece, for me. The twist is perhaps the best I've ever seen. Hitchcock is another master of combining music and picture to sublime effect; it's all about increasing the tempo at exactly the right moment to move you into awe. The imagery was pretty - the contrast of colours catches the eye frequently.
But the story is the key to this one. A masterfully composed mystery from the master of the genre, the film flows easily from scene to scene without ever being awkwardly complicated, though it is entirely complex throughout. James Stewart is excellent, and his character's, John Ferguson's, relationships produce a mixture of emotions.

10/10.

You seem to like your old films speedy, and certainly see the artistic side of them. Personally I just find them a bit boring and dull, but that's my problem. Good reviews from yourself, I couldn't comment on a film in the way you do. I can just say, 'yup I liked it cause it had lots of guns and explosions!!!'.

Oh and bristol-ian, a musical?? Really starting to show how un-cultured I am! Can't stant the bloody things...

Yeah, don't let Sound Of Music and Oliver and other musicals influence, for a kickoff they don't have electric guitar and alies bellowing "Ulla" at you.

Well if you like guns and explosions then good for you; so does my good friend, and he resents me for not liking movies for the same reasons he does. :p

Nah, I don't just like guns and explosins, in fact if thats all a film has going for it I find it very boring (unless it's done in a die hard style way). Was just using it as an over the top example really. My favourite movie of all time is probably The Matrix, closely followed by The Shawshank Redemption, then Dodge Ball/Zoolander/Anchorman in third.

Fair enough then. I love The Shawshank Redemption, and the four other movies you listed are also great. Anchorman and Zoolander especially. Will Ferrell is hilarious in both.

Lawrence of Arabia.

One of my favourite movies. The character Lawrence is probably one of my favourites of all time, aswell.

Not that he was a likeable, character, no. He certainly was for the most part, up to where he conquers Aqaba; thereafter his ego and Messiah-complex became more apparent, nearly leading to his death a couple of times; his blood-thirsty tendancies were another great characteristic, culminating in the spectacular "No prisoners!" scene, which O'Toole conveys to absolute perfection.

Visually it is probably perfect; from Arabia to Cairo, everything is strikingly gorgeous (though moreso the architecture in the Egypt-based scenes). Some shots derived from the desert are spellbinding - most notably where Lawrence crosses back into the desert to retrieve the man who fell off his camel, and also during the 'well' scene.

The score was also fantastic; very rousing.

10/10

Saw Dead Set on tv last weekend. Two and a half hours of Big Brother contestants surrounded by zombies. Very much enjoy.

Zombie stuff is great for satire, but the usual 90 mins film doesn't have enough time to get in to it. Charlie Brooker dun a good job.

I just watched a animated movie called '9' it's kind of like a pinnochio but with little stitch men. Not sure if the kids would understand the whole moral of the story but it's good to watch and the animation is as always these days top notch.

Also watched a Blue Ray rip of 'Up' even thou I watched it about 2 months ago but a stink cam version it's always better watching it in good quality.

Just saw Zombieland. f***ing awesome Cameo. ill say no more[/b]

I saw dozens of movies over the summer out in the states and even though it was a few weeks back now, Zombieland still stands out as one of the best.
Funny, gorey, violent, entertaining, good plot...and yes, a brilliant cameo!!!

I felt it lacked gore. Apart from the clown, I mean; that was satisfyingly gorey. The rest needed more, though. :(

All the Great Movie

The Blues Brothers

Just finished watching Surrogates. I usually don't like Bruce Willis movies but he does pretty good on this one playing a agent that has to solve a murder case but in doing so he unravels more mysteries than he expected. I liked it kind of reminded me of a mix between I Robot and Body Snatchers in a way but without the alien crap.

Great film, as always from Hitchcock. His movies have an irresistable charm, whether conveyed through the gorgeous scenery, excellent characters or his dialogue. I enjoyed the first hour of the movie more; the second half was mostly about survival and that resulted in a lot of things being shoved aside. Tippi Hedren was fantastic. The other main actors held their own, also, but some of the minors ones, especially the children, were diabolical. I mean really. The school scene is an example. I felt like screaming at the television because of them. :x

The terror is built up well through the imagery used and his lack of music.

All in all, a brilliant movie. 9/10.

Nice one Speedy. Have you seen Rear Window yet? I'd say it's Hitchcock's best by far, and that's saying a lot because The Birds, Dial M for Murder and Vertigo are all up their with my all time favourites.

I don't know why Psycho is commonly hailed as his best, it's good, but not as twisted and eery as some of the others I mentioned. People obviously got startled by the shower stabbing scene... also Bates is one crazy schizophrenic mo-fo afterall.

Zombieland f#@!ing awesome movie it's serious like 'Dawn Of The Dead' but with a spice of comedy. I don't know how they even thought of making a Horror Comedy but they pull it off.
