[RWC2019][Quarter-Final 1] England vs. Australia (19/10/2019)

So got load shed just before the game kicked off. How has the refs performance been? Is there any probability of Cheika having one last go at a ref?

Definitely not Garces' worst game, but Australia got the rub of the green tbh, so doubt he can really complain.

So, obviously England were impressive. Great scrum, solid breakdown and defence, pretty clinical on the counter and... really importantly made decent decisions. The back row was great, front row was great, Young's was average (which is frikkin incredible for Young's) 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14 all performed well with some flashes of genius (Slade's grubber) and Daly dallied... as per when he plays 15.

Australia... holy dumb-f**k! They looked like they had NO IDEA about what processes to go through where and when! If the new directive on refereeing high-tackles has caused the average Ozzie Union fan to question his own support, this performance is the death knell for the game in Australia! Absolute clown-show!

Take nothing away from England though... congratulations on a semi, you looked really really good today.

Well Skeen is a blind TMO good game from rest of team of 3 .
No real controversy was all happy with garces .
Control generally good took chances with little ball.
Defence sound.
Still a few too many pens.
Next tough one to come.
Hope Jonnys hamstring isn't shot.

The only ref controversy is how a TMO doesn't understand the concept of forwards and backwards. Though he is a Kiwi and as we know the Laws are different there......... Garces did as predicted and negated the Jackal. Pocock had a couple of stone dead pens that he was denied.

Overall though Australia deployed a gameplan that I've only ever seen the Scots try before. That being to lob it randomly around in your own 22 hoping it'll somehow lead to miracle scores. With Kerevi it might but it's asking for trouble.

In the end a very professional job and we march on.

And yet. While Aus were v dumb, they also cut us to pieces too often for comfort, esp in the first half and 2 of our tries were from intercepts. We were good, but will need to get better.

I now want Ire to have the biggest 80 mins of their lives. I'm calling it now, if Ire beat NZ, Bill's coming home.

Was that same TMO that failed to card the Aussie winger vs Fiji and called a fair tackle when Hooper took out Biggar?
Absolutely shocking officials, but England did very well avoiding most 50/50 situations in the second half.

Personally, I feel this showed the difference between England and Wales (and also why I feel England will make the final).

Wales racked up the points in the first half vs Australia with the first XV, but tired in the 2nd half and didn't have much quality coming from the bench, struggled to contain them.
England didn't rack the points up as much with their first XV, but in the 2nd half the quality of players they were able to bring on was much higher, negating the Australians and allowing a similar scoreline in each half.

The English bench is incredibly strong, and they've finally found 2 high quality flankers.

(Also loved Sinckler trying to suppress a grin when he scored. First time I've seen a genuine smile from him)

Yup.

Well played England. EJ had Cheikas number and everyone knew it.

How are you going to win a game of rugby if you can't exit your 22? Idiocy.

I hope we get a good coach in because we have a real talented bunch of players that are being held back by genuine idiots.

Well the Irish are confident of beating NZ because they've beat them twice recently,
We've beaten Ireland twice this year so we should cruise it

Not just beaten. Walloped. At their place and ours.

The arrogance has just been refuelled.

Absolutely. On paper, that Aussie team could take it to anyone. But their tactics? Abysmal.

As disappointed as Aussie fans will be, I think some will see a silver lining in Cheika getting the boot.

The Australian game has some huge challenges to overcome, but there is a lot of talent there that a better coach than Cheika could mould in to a very good side.
