RWC Semi Final: France - Wales (15-08-2011, 21:00)

The worst of it is that there are still people on internet forums (including this one) who will argue that it wasn't red card.

Well sorry to rain on your parade, but that was a red card all day long. For the removal of doubt, here is the relevant extract from the Spear Tackle Memorandum

[TEXTAREA]To summarise, the possible scenarios when a tackler horizontally lifts a player off the
ground:

► The player is lifted and then forced or "speared" into the ground. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle.

► The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player's safety. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle.

►For all other types of dangerous lifting tackles, it may be considered a penalty
or yellow card is sufficient.[/TEXTAREA]

This memorandum was issued in June 2009. That is over TWO YEARS ago, and yet people still haven't learned.
Just quoting this so that it's on here more and people are less likely to skim over it....

The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player's safety. A red card should be issued for this type of tackle.

This is what Smartcooky said and it is right

glad the ref gave a red, it was dangerous, from the earlier penalties and the penalties missed i was starting to think the ref was biased towards wales ;)

i support france coz i enjoy the type of rugby they play, and it would be the perfect final if it was nz vs world cup rivals france, beating them in the final would be the perfect ending

Nah what are u dickheads talkin bout. Refs are ruining games yo. Need to get some old school mad-dogs to re-write the rules ay. Stuff insurance companies and all their safety demands, we need justice.

As an England fan you will not have heard me say this before, nor will you again probably, but Wales have been hard done by here. If that is considered a dangerous tackle these days then I may as well go and watch a man's game. Anybody know where the synchronised swimming board is?

The regulations described by Smartcooky do seem to make it black and white. The red was justifiable

Even if it could be argued it was on the harsh side, Warburton should know that you lay yourself open as soon as you take a player off his feet. Was it wrong of the ref in a RWC semi -final. No, if he thought it deserved a red card, then its exactly the right place. Help to stamp it out.

But it has really emphasised the problem we have in Britain. ITV are just not in the same class as the BBC in covering rugby. The one-sidedness of the coverage is just ridiculous. Mullins is a muppet.

We should have run away with this, now we cant win a lineout, surely if a ref has French parents he cant be allowed to ref a game involving France, or maybe i'm just crazy.

What is Hook's stats for the game, must have missed three or four by now.

france are playing like retards, they can win this game easily if they just spread it out wide and stop kicking so much, they have the numbers but they aren't using them

Taken fromva post from another forum:

"The IRB Council has reinforced its zero-tolerance stance towards all dangerous tackles by approving an amendment to the Law relating to the spear tackle.

An amendment to Law 10.4(j) has been approved to recognise the defensive actions of the tackled player when the arms are outstretched to break a fall and to further ensure the consistency of application of the appropriate sanction for offending players.

The amended Law 10.4(j) will now read: Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.

Player lifted from ground - check
Dropped while feet off ground - check
Head comes into contact with ground - check

Sanction: red card"

Glad to see Wales are still hanging on, but those passages late in the game when fatigue has set in will be telling, if Wales go through it will be a great testament to this teams abilities.

It's been a poor quality game so far, red card was thoroughly deserved it was just in the heat of the moment but he could have broke his neck. Hook was the wrong player for the game, France have been average Wales worse. Every time I look at the screen I imagine those red jerseys are green. :(

Did anyone see Yachvili's pass off the lineout France stole in the Welsh 5 metres around 7/8 minutes ago? It was quality

Mike Philips is such a c**t - swearing the French players faces after scoring

Kick, kick, kick the ball
Kick it all day long
Merrily, merrily, merrily it's a Kick-a-thon

Not! Phillips with yet another decisive try.
