Rugby Championship: South Africa - Argentina (18/08/2012)

There is only one thing I know for sure, Kirchner man of the match, used to ruin Argentina.

P.d: Where is the pumas, cough, south america - SA of the 82 topic? ;)

Looking forward to this match, and seeing Argentina enter the fray ... I don't expect miracles from them this season, but I'm sure they'll be more than a hand full for all of the other sides.

... It's a moot point now, as the teams have already been named, but the Boks management probably didn't have enough time to negociate Kanko's release from the Japanese club, based on how long it took to attain SBW's release

Creevy is indeed out injured. Argentina desperately need Postiglioni to become a solid test player, as Guiñazú is rather average.

As for Imhoff, he's perhaps the best attacking winger they have, but he sometimes gets shown on defence by bigger players. So does Amorosino, so it became an either or situation, and as Amorosino is a more accomplished fullback, he was given the spot. And then, in a 5/2 split, his lack of polyfunctionality played against him.

Thanks for that. Guiñazú is capable of playing prop too isn't he? I assume that means he should be a strong scrummager (for a hooker). Out of curiosity, who do you think will be Argentina's 1st choice goal-kicker? In the RWC they used a number of different players to kick at goal, but none were overly successful...

Right, onto the South African side. No real surprises there. I quite like the balance of the loose trio, I just think they have the wrong numbers on their backs!

I would agree with you, but that won't change their roles. Granted, they are all versatile back rows, and have very likely started in all loose forwards positions at one time or another.
Oh, to see Jacques Botes in a Springbok jersey.

JMH liked to boot the leather off the ball, so I can see him as first choice goalkicker.

My bets on Juan Martin Hernandez. He was injured during RWC '11, but I think he kind runs the show when he's healthy. Martin Bustos Moyano has a pretty solid boot with Montpelier, but he's not in the 22.

Just put all my vcash on the Pumas by mistake!!! Argh!!! GO ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!! :p haha!

JMH was the goalkicker against Stade Français, so it'll probably be him. He's a very talented goalkicker, but I feel that he hasn' worked it enough to be as effective as he could be. Bustos Moyano is the only "serious" goalkicker in the squad, but is not part of the 22.
Besides them, Fernandez, Martinez Gurruchaga and Bosch are decent goalkickers, but definitely not international level. Bosch slotted this one against the All Blacks:

You would think so, but Guiñazú isn't actually that great when it comes to set pieces. His lineout throwing is dire and struggled scrummaging against Italy and France (although the addition of one of the best scrummaging second rows in Albacete might help for these matches).

Watch the video from the link below, and his failure to do a simple job in hooking the ball cost the Pumas a try against Italy in June.

To be fair Italy and France are probably the 2 strongest scrummaging nations in the world and use it as a weapon. Maybe he'll fare better against the Sanzar sides

A while back I was excited to hear that Argentina may join this competion, but then I just lost track. I haven't been following Argentina at all, and the last I heard (perhaps around World Cup time), was that Argentina had an aging team. I see the odds aren't good for them, so just a question - are they up to playing against these three powerful teams, or will they turn out to be the [6 Nations] Italy of Rugby Championship?

They probably won't win a match in this RC, but they will be very competitive at home. Our record there over the years is not exactly great; we were lucky to win on the last two occasions we were there.

I don't think they are destined to become the "Italy" of the Rugby Championship. IMO they are capable of much, much more than that, and I can see them knocking over all three SANZAR teams some time in the next few years. Italy have only ever had nine wins in twelve years of the Six Nations, and they have still never beaten England, Ireland (in 6N) or any of the SANZAR Countries. Argentina have beaten Australia four times (although only once in the professional era), and have had 33 victories over 6N sides since 2000 (more wins than Italy or Scotland!!)

x 2 v England
x 6 v Scotland
x 4 v Ireland
x 4 v Wales
x 8 v France
x 9 v Italy

As an interesting aside, the SANZAR countries have played in Argentina a total of 20 times between them, but ALL of the matches have been in Buenos Aires. None of the teams have ever had the intimidating pleasure of playing them in the interior, at places mike Mendoza or Rosario. South Africa and Australia are going to find out about that soon......very soon!

As I see it in use, the Argentina shirt is nice if a little to bright shade of blue.

Decent start, Bismark off with an injury and a SA pen from an Argie infringement at ruck time.

Nice little set of phases there by Argentina, didn't go that far but ball retention and not panicking was good. Some of these Gary Owen's have been fantastic.
