who does everyone think will be the next irish captain? i'd personally think that ferris or kearney would make good captains.

Heaslip has his name on the armband (if they do that, which they don't). Forwards are usually the preferred choice for captain and, while Jamie isn't that inspirational before games (he used to take an hour nap to get himself in the mood!), he does his talking on the pitch. A great leader and quite possibly our best player. I hope he further enhances his reputation over the summer but it's a big ask with the men around him.

Heaslip easily as he's experienced enough and a great knowledge too and as said already a captain really needs to be in pack.

Fullbacks don't really make good captains. Too far away from the action. Ferris and Heaslip are good shouts.

Heaslip is 26. I agree with dullonien that Ferris would be another option but Heaslip is the standout candidate once O'Driscoll quits.

It's always tough to judge who'd make good captains imo. We only really get to see what they're like on the playing field, not behind closed doors. It also depends on what kinda captain the coach is looking for. Ryan Jones for exaple wouldn't be alot of coaches natural choice, as he's quite a quiet guy who instead tries to lead by example. This goes for O'Driscoll in alot of ways, whearas someone like O'Connell is in peoples faces telling them what to do.

Heasilip is the standout player, but someone else might make a better captain in the coaches eyes. Being certain of your place is an important starting place though.

Has Heaslip captained at club level before?

its heasilp for me ..his work rate is second to none he is irelands stand out performer day in day out ...

i dont think ferris will be picked as he will not sing the anthems though ..class player but a man who wont sing the anthem will not be in the running for "inspirational leader"

True. Willie John McBride was a shite captain for the same reason...........

Why should an Ulster unionist sing the anthem of the 26 counties?

Yup that's the biggest load ofshite I've ever heard. It's not the 70's anymore. If he doesn't want to sing the anthem he doesn't have to.

he is as irish as all the other players
the team is ireland as a whole which as not one national athem for it so we have irelands call he doesnt have to sing the soldiers song
would drico or paul o'connell sing god save the queen if ireland played at ravenhill? probaly not
also before playing a game i think the last thing on ferris's mind is singing he is more thinking about killing people and stuff he's a nutter

Another part of it is saying and doing the right thing. Ryan Jones isn't easily lead astray by the media and is good with refs. Also, you saw what he did with Tiatia at the weekend- Heaslip strikes me as a bit self-centred and hoteaded. O'Driscoll is a great captain because he leads from the front and thinks things through. He's always calm, and suits the captaincy. The Munster-Northampton game where O'Connell got sent off showed how it's not always good to have a confrontational captain.

Tommy Bowe should be captain, because everyone loves him. I'd do whatvere he asked. Even if I was a ref.

You're not far wrong. After the Ospreys proved party poopers in the RDS on Saturday, they did a lap of honour. While half the stadium had emptied by that stage, those who stayed were almost all chanting Tommy Bowe's name - this after he scored a try which proved crucial in beating Leinster!

As far as i have seen he wont sing either irelands call or amhran na bhfiann apologies for spelling .

but for leadership i always prefer a captain who will do everything with his team on or off the field . just my preference

and i am not a biggot if thats what any of you are thinking ..got many protestant friends **** it my girlfriends one i just feel that the outstanding reprasentative for any country should sing its anthem .

I disagree with this but I see where you're coming from. I think a cpaptain should lead by example andrepresent his team well. My main specification for the role of captain is to be able to bringthe best ability and attitude out of the team and idividual players.

a lot of players don't sing the anthem because it's to emotional, i can understand that.
