Oscar Pistorius - Paralypic Gold Medalist, Shoots and Kills Girlfriend

She's Hougaard's ex, right? Didn't know him and Pistorius were friends. That's a recipe for hard feelings IMO; being friends with your girl's ex.

It depends on the calibre of the gun and where it hit. I saw a person who was shot in the head once (He lived after several emergency surgeries) and the bleeding was almost non existant from a .303 round. That may be because the bullet didn't exit, so it would depend on if she had an exit wound or not as to if there was very much blood. As entry wounds tend to be small the blood can be stemmed, while exit wounds are generally gaping maws of blood and skin being torn through from the bullet mushrooming, tumbling or just generally ruining your day.

Calibre plays an issue but also the type of bullet used. If he was firing with a Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) more then likely the bullet would punch straight through and the bullet would not mushroom; however, with something like a Hollow-Point (HP) it will mushroom and cause far more damage. If she was shot at fairly close range the damage witha pistol would be a lot greater athe round would have far more kinetic energy on impact.

The likely hood of him firing an FMJ from a pistol is pretty slim, It would most likely have been a hollow point given it was apparently a self defence weapon, you are more likely to load it with that. Even when a hollowpoint enters it leaves a fairly small hole, so it would have had to have exited to cause blood splatter on the bat, He more than likely belted her with the bat and then shot her to cover it up. That said we may never know what happened.

Edit: From his statement released today the bullet used was a 9mm Parabellum.

Well this is his account:

Pretoria - Oscar Pistorius was emotional when his affidavit on how he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was read to the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

"I deny the aforesaid [murder] allegation in the strongest terms," Pistorius said in the 10-page statement, which was read to the court by his advocate Barry Roux.

Pistorius' version of events was being presented in an application for bail on the same day that Steenkamp's funeral service was being held in Port Elizabeth, about 1 100km away.

Pistorius was arrested on Thursday morning after Steenkamp was shot dead at his home in Silver Woods country estate, in Pretoria.

He was charged with murder on Friday.

The State intends arguing that the murder was pre-meditated.

With his brother Carl supporting him, the court heard: "I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder, let alone premeditated murder, as I had no intention to kill my girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp."

In the affidavit, Pistorius said he would put factors before the court to show that it was in the interests of justice to permit his release on bail, and that the State would not be able to present any "objective facts" that he committed a "planned or premeditated murder".

"On 13 February, Reeva would have gone out with her friends and I with my friends," Pistorius said in the affidavit.

"Reeva then called me and asked that we rather spend the evening at home.

"I agreed and we were content to have a quiet dinner together at home.

"By about 22:00 on 13 February 2013, we were in our bedroom. She was doing her yoga exercises and I was in bed watching television.

"My prosthetic legs were off. We were deeply in love and I could not be happier. I know she felt the same way.

"She had given me a present for Valentine's Day, but asked me only to open it the next day."

Pistorius said that after Steenkamp finished her yoga exercises, she got into bed and they both fell asleep.

"I am acutely aware of violent crime being committed by intruders entering homes with a view to commit crime, including violent crime. I have received death threats before. I have also been a victim of violence and of burglary before," he said in the statement.

"For that reason, I kept my firearm, a 9mm Parabellum, underneath my bed when I went to bed at night.

"During the early hours of 14 February 2013, I woke up, went onto the balcony to bring the fan in and close the sliding door, the blinds and the curtains.

Filled with terror

"I heard a noise in the bathroom and realised that someone was in the bathroom. I felt a sense of terror rushing over me.

"There are no burglar bars across the bathroom window and I knew that contractors who worked at my house had left the ladders outside.

"Although I did not have my prosthetic legs on I have mobility on my stumps.

"I believed that someone had entered my house. I was too scared to switch a light on. I grabbed my 9mm pistol from underneath my bed.

"On my way to the bathroom, I screamed words to the effect for him/them to get out of my house and for Reeva to phone the police.

"It was pitch dark in the bedroom and I thought Reeva was in bed. I noticed that the bathroom window was open. I realised that the intruder/s was/were in the toilet because the toilet door was closed and I did not see anyone in the bathroom.

"I heard movement inside the toilet. The toilet is inside the bathroom and has a separate door.

"It filled me with horror and fear of an intruder or intruders being inside the toilet.

"I thought he or they must have entered through the unprotected window," he said.

"As I did not have my prosthetic legs on and felt extremely vulnerable, I knew I had to protect Reeva and myself.

"I believed that when the intruder/s came out of the toilet we would be in grave danger.

"I felt trapped as my bedroom door was locked and I have limited mobility on my stumps.

"I fired shots at the toilet door and shouted to Reeva to phone the police," he said.

"She did not respond and I moved backwards out of the bathroom, keeping my eyes on the bathroom entrance.

Realisation

"Everything was pitch dark in the bedroom and I was still too scared to switch on a light. Reeva was not responding.

"When I reached the bed, I realised that Reeva was not in bed.

"That is when it dawned on me that it could have been Reeva who was in the toilet.

"I returned to the bathroom calling her name. I tried to open the toilet door but it was locked. I rushed back into the bedroom and opened the sliding door, exiting onto the balcony and screamed for help.

"I put on my prosthetic legs, ran back to the bathroom and tried to kick the toilet door open.

"I think I must then have turned on the lights.

"I went back into the bedroom and grabbed my cricket bat to bash open the toilet door. A panel or panels broke off and I found the key on the floor and unlocked and opened the door.

"Reeva was slumped over but alive.

"I battled to get her out of the toilet and pulled her into the bathroom.

"I phoned Johan Stander ['Stander'] who was involved in the administration of the estate and asked him to phone the ambulance. I phoned Netcare and asked for help," said Pistorius.

"I went downstairs to open the front door. I returned to the bathroom and picked Reeva up as I had been told not to wait for the paramedics, but to take her to hospital.

"I carried her downstairs in order to take her to the hospital. On my way down, Stander arrived. A doctor who lives in the complex also arrived.

"Downstairs, I tried to render the assistance to Reeva that I could, but she died in my arms.

"I am absolutely mortified by the events and the devastating loss of my beloved Reeva.

"With the benefit of hindsight I believe that Reeva went to the toilet when I went out onto the balcony to bring the fan in.

"I cannot bear to think of the suffering I have caused her and her family, knowing how much she was loved.

"I also know that the events of that tragic night were as I have described them and that in due course I have no doubt the police and expert investigators will bear this out," said Pistorius.

His bail application continues on Wednesday.

I believe the guy and I honestly feel sorry for him. Not sure if it's because I want to believe that he wouldn't do it on purpose or because I don't think anyone would be so sloppy in pre-meditated murder. I believe his account and do believe he was just an extremely negligent firearm owner, instead of a cold-blooded killer. Even though the former may very well be the case, his negligence cost a women her life, and he should be held accountable for that. As a gun owner he should know the law regarding discharging a firearm back to front. Warning shots, having a visual on the perp, whether they were armed, etc. It appears his extreme paranoia got the better of him, and as a South African I can understand that to a degree. Understandable but still, firing 4 shots is excessive. Even it was a perp, his excessive amount of shots would of been rightfully questioned.
The jokes are in bad taste, and painting him as a vicious killer is premature but understandable considering the way "facts" trickle from the media.
We heard his side yesterday, now lets see today why the State reckons it's a Schedule 6 murder.

yeah well, the saying goes, innocent until proven otherwise, unless you're a Saffa...

Most people's reactions were first, that they felt sorry for the guy, then as news started to flow, most people changed their attitude towards him and went on a facebook rage. then all of a sudden after reading his affidavit, they feel sorry again for him.

Emotion is a powerful tool to persuade...

As for the bail hearing, I'm quite interested in hearing what the State will use as argument for pre-meditated murder, as Pistorius' attorney quite rightfully asked, "where is the proof that Pistorius woke up, grabbed his gun, put on his prosthetics, walked 7m and then fired shots at the door". to which the prosecution just said, "I will have to use my thinking cap and get back to you". Also the defense asked for evidence on certain issues the prosecution raised, which I think, they either don't have/waiting for reports/are a fishing expedition.

Let's see what happens today...

It's pretty far fetched to be honest. He heard a noise in the bathroom so just let off four rounds not knowing who was behind the bathroom door? If he's innocent he should be jailed for his idiocy. I don't care how violent a country it is, doing what he did is just moronic, it could have been a 10 year old kid that had broken into his house. Irrespectively I think he's trying to do an OJ because with his story 2 + 2 = bananas

It sounds bananas for sure but you have to realize that SA is a crazy place. Try living, for an extended period of time, in a place where.. well I'm not even going to go into it, still too much to do today.

Just going to say that my uncle lives on a farm and his house has a reinforced concrete slab under the roof, 5 high wire fenced camps around the house and some serious outward facing heavy duty steel mesh cages around the windows so that a hand grenade couldn't get caught inside and some heavily redundant security around their entrance. This sounds like paranoia but they have been attacked by groups wielding automatic weapons twice now and they are alive because of their paranoia. He has had to replace 10 dogs already.

Yeah got a lot of mates from joburg so understand what a crazy & violent place it is, my best mate was car jacked and shot 4 times & survived. I just think his story doesn't add up. He's either a ruthless killer or a complete f*ckwit - either way he should be behind bars.

Depending on his paranoia, he should go for medical evaluation before the trial starts... As this could have a major role to play in the case.

As for the shooting part, I can clearly understand his point of view. I woke up one night hearing a sound at my bedroom window (I was 17 at the time). It was 2 burglars busy scraping off the putty from my window to climd into the house. they couldn't see me in my bed, so I called my dad who's room is a far end off from mine, and told him that there are 2 guys trying to break in. He flew out of the bed, grabbed his gun from the safe, went to the sliding door as far away from them as possible, and when he saw them, he fired a warning shot in the air (which Oscar should've done). those 2 guys ran, and jumped over our 6m high wall. when the police came to do the investigation, they found 4 AK-47's, 2 knives, and 3 9mm pistols...

From that day, I can't sleep for more than 5 hours...

LOL, hein. How the **** did they jump 6m!?! I know I 'ran' up walls and grabbed them to pull me up to the gallery for fun at the squash courts but that was 5 meters max and I was pretty athletic back then.

TBF being shot at is extra motivation LOL. My dad shot at 2 robbers a while back (no warning shots) and hit at least one somewhere as there was some blood on the ground but neither him nor me could match their prints on the ground and I'm a pretty tall guy and could run pretty fast in a straight line.

Who fires blindly through a closed bathroom door?
I mean, fair enough he's scared as it's happened before etc.etc. but randomly shoot into a room, which is a room that people get up and use in the middle of the night on occasion, anyway.
If his story is true then he's an absolute idiot. Hearing a noise in your en-suite bathroom, when there is someone else staying in your house, isn't an excuse to start shooting.

My thoughts too.

Though, to be fair to him, it's easy to get irrational in night, especially in a place like SA (from what I've heard anyway).

I don't really feel those of us not from South Africa can judge on just how rational a response that was. Obviously not completely rational, but it is very difficult to judge the mindset of a man who has probably lived in fear since he was old enough to understand it, when that is not your experience.

I believe and understand his paranoia.. I was only in SA for a month and saw enough **** to understand just how dangerous that country is. On only my second day in Jo'Burg I got held at knife point in the middle of the day on a busy city street. The two mates who were with me ran off and left me luckily I was brought up in a rough neighbourhood myself it didn't really take much of a toll on me in my rebel teenage years. That had happened to me before back home, but NOT in the middle of the day up town. The other two had to be sent home within days because they were terrified. We saw muggings, went for a late night walk and saw this naked dude trying to break into a clothes store before charging at us for our jackets and even had guns pointed at us for a laugh. Our guide told us alot of stories about what goes on in SA and since I arrived home from SA I have never taken my own country for granted since.

Yeah I get that it's a violent country and it's hard for none South Africans to understand, but still blindly firing off 4 rounds into your bathroom in the pitch black with your missus nearby seems pretty foolish, even for South Africa!

He's rich, decent legal team + incompetent/corrupt police means he'll probably walk anyway.
