Isn't that kind of what is good about a sport like rugby? That it isn't a purely physical sport? In the NFL I'm almost convinced that all you need for certain positions is the requisite athleticism, you don't even need much time learning (I see Daniel Adongo just got signed for the Colts) whereas in rugby there are a whole lot of nuances that can't be measured or picked up in a hurry.

Oh, yeah I agree, athleticism is quite clearly the major attribute needed by most players in most positions.
You just have to look at the rugby players they have signed to see that... and the fact that they generally refer to their players as "athletes".
I'm not really a football fan at all, I very rarely watch it.
But I certainly respect their professionalism in this regard.

What I was saying is that some rugby players are actually quite poor athletes in some respects.
Having a really high body fat percentage should not really be seen as acceptable, yet it is.
For every player that you see that is in really good shape and obviously pays attention to it, you get another that is fat and weak and probably wouldn't bother doing any conditioning work if no-one made him.
The big thing that gets to me, is this notion that a lot of people have, that to be in top condition you have to sacrifice your rugby playing ability.
Which is simply not true at all.

A kiwi called Nic Purcell has just been drafted in to the Philidelphia Eagles based on his rugby background.

Lawrence Okoye, former London Irish academy player, and GB discus thrower.

All very good athletes, Freaks even....

The "Star" players they're made out to be by US journalism? Not so much...

Too many people think that NFL is like rugby due to the ball being a similar shape.

NFL is all about 3-10secs of extremely high impact, intense activity, with a breather between. (you ever notice how many oxygen masks are deployed on the sidelines?)
Rugby is high impact, high endurance.
Most NFL players would be incredible at rugby, but only for about 10 seconds (optimistic duration :p)

Rugby's greatest gift is that anyone of any size can play it, I loved the comment on the final lions game 'Adam jones is no good in the loose'.....'then tell him to sit down on the half way line until the next scrum!'. :)

I love both sports but will forever wind up my American friends with 'NFL was invented to fill the space between commercials'. So many of them say that SKy's coverage is better than fox/nbc etc as they dont cut to commercials every 10 seconds.

Do we have a Fantasy League going?

I've been in NFL leagues for the last 10 years or so, so if nobody else already runs one, or wants to, then I can probably set one up.

There are a few options out there.

SKy run a very very VERY basic league, where you change players each week, and players can be owned by multiple teams. This is a prize league (dependent on eligibility).

NFL run a good one, but it requires Drafting (Live Draft is fun, where you can curse the player before you in the order for picking the player you wanted), and the points have to be set up (I can probably get a hand from an American friend if I set that one up).

Yahoo also run one similar to the NFL, but the 'live scores' system is pretty poor.

When it becomes available I'll start a mini-league on the SKy site, and post details here. ALso, if there's enough interest, I'll see about getting the NFL/Yahoo one set up.

They would hopeless; only one bloke on the team could pass, only one could kick, and the majority couldn't even catch. Hitting a ruck they'd probably be useful but other than that, useless.

Rightio then people. We have a league set up on the NFL.com Fantasy site.

Based on the amount of guys who post in this thread I have set it for a 10 team league, with an autopick draft that will take place on SEPTEMBER 1ST. Those who want to take part PM me with an email address I can then send the league invite to.

Yeah, u are right. Rugby is the king of sports.

Rugby Rules!

Who is the best Wide receiver today for you?

It depends on what you consider beaing "best". Percy Harvin is the most complete WR in the league, but there's a lot of WR's better in the one-dimensional aspect of being a wide receiver.

@Amobokoboko: Seattle Seahawks!!!

Percy Harvin*= 1.80 m and 83 kg.

Many backs of rugby could play in that position.

This ad is crackup.

Like others have said, depends.

I like the stronger not as fast WRs - Andre Johnson from the Texans, ANquan Boldin formerly of the Ravens, Brandon Marshall of the BEars, are all good in my book.
