[June Tests 2018: 1st Test] South Africa vs. England (09/06/2018)

I'm not sure I agree with that assessment. "Running with the ball" is actually a fairly broad criteria when applied practically. You have "ball carriers" for the purpose of wearing down the opposition and providing continuity in phase play - Itoje, Isiekwe and George are all international standard here if not consistent line breakers. Mako and Sinckler are freakish in their ability to make line breaks from stationary positions against set defences and are probably in a club of <10 tight five players that can do this globally. I'll agree that we are missing this type of player in the backs, but actually with the consistency with which forwards find themselves dotted around the field these days, this doesn't tend to matter hugely other than 1st phase off a full line-out or scrum.

Then you have "strike runners" (I've made these categories up, but hopefully you get the gist) who are tasked with picking of gaps created in the defence, exploiting turnovers and initiating counter-attacks/line-breaks. Here we have - Daly, May, Youngs, Brown (I don't like including him but he is difficult to tackle and frequently steps out of or ducks under tackles). Slade is also capable of putting in a good step and fend, although I'll concede he is more of a distributor than a JJ/Marchant/Daly/Te'o in that channel.

That leaves Ford, Faz, Curry and Robshaw. Both Flankers will carry all day if asked to, albeit with limited gain line success, but they are predominantly there to provide link play and support breakdowns. Ford is a pure distributor, but Faz has been hitting some lovely lines of late and I'd be very surprised to see him without a line break after 80 mins vs SA.

In essence, what I'm saying is, whilst not perfect, I don't think we will be short of options of people who can make an impact ball-in-hand. I'd happily be proven wrong, but I'm trying to think of successful sides that are significantly more slanted towards out-and-out runners than this and am drawing a bit of a blank. Conversely the Saracens side that dominated the final month of the premiership is arguably less blessed in the ball carrying department and didn't seem to struggle at all.

"Running with the ball" as a broad criteria is precisely my point, I've invluded Billy V alongside Ben Youngs which I think should show what I meant. Given the broadness if thecwfinition, my point remains that 6 is far too few. The others you mention IMO do not qualify, they're no better than "do a job" in running terms, players who can catch a ball and run with it without embarrassing themselves. I'm applying a higher standard, which I think is reasonable for a team with ambitions to be the best in the world - players you'd consider a danger, who defences would always try to keep an eye on.

We don't have any ball carries in the whole
Squad for midfield. Manu, Teo both out and no one else brought in. All we have left is guile and Binny to punch holes. Half the reason we have struggled is lack of bulk in this area, but it is what it is.

See above. I'm deliberately NOT just talking about "bulky" ball carriers, as there are many different ways to be effective ball in hand. But you need tuning threats (of whatever style) across the park; and the midfield is a key area for this.

Well Solomona's on the bench, I'm not his biggest fan but at the very least it would mean that all of our back three offer an attacking threat (which should be bare minimum IMO)/allow Daly to step into 13 and have some danger there.

Are you saying that, given the options, you're happy with the 10-12-13 combo? I'm a real believer that a distributor is a real waste if he doesn't have enough players around him who attract defenders and/or use the space. I think what we have is the extreme end of that - who are the SA centres going to be keeping an eye on, to stop them drifting out and cutting down the space for May/Daly?
This is a really good point. With no hard ball carrier available won't the Saffers just drift us into touch? I suppose some fancy footwork would help, but if they get a decent line speed and chew up the space then we are going to need to attack from very deep, and I can't remeber the last time we did that?!

I also agree that Solomona on the bench could in theory be a real threat to tired second half legs, but that's only if the back three are actually working well. If not he's going to have a very hard time.

I love some of the players selected for this, but I'm afraid I can't see this England side doing too well against the Bocks, especially at altitude. Can't put a score on it but I say the Bocks will take this one.

At the time I was sympathetic towards Fearns but the way he has behaved since changed my opinion.

I dislike Burgess more though.

Post World Cup, I would have liked to have seen him suck it up, establish himself as a 6 and really earn his call-ups. I think he would have made it if his ego hadn't got in the way.

Some are saying brown to the wing is just incase daly at FB doesnt work out but isnt more of a risk having solomona on the bench, bring him on and if he defends like in argentina we'll be screwed. Start him and daly with brown to come on if his defence is bad or come on at FB moving daly to 13 for last 20.

I don't get the "Brown is there to make Daly's life easier" line,
He was so so bad vs Barbarians, he's gonna be making Daly's life harder if anything

Just got tickets via a friend, gonna be awesomenessnessness

I'm going to the Newlands one with some English family, very keen, hopefully South Africa is still in it by then!
