[EOYT] England vs. Argentina 09/11/13

It isn't about one game you are right Henry. However, it is about building the fear factor for teams visiting HQ as we move towards our home WC and for that reason I think these Autumn Internationals are of huge importance. I seriously doubt we can beat NZ but if we can it would be massive for this England side. Beating Argentina is a must.

New coach, new hope. I really don't know what to expect for this Puma side. They could be trashed easily or get an heroic win. I think it will be 30 -15 or something like that for England.

According to that the team will be:

1. Corbs
2. Hartley
3. Wilson
4. Launchbury
5. Lawes
6. Wood
7. Robshaw
8. Vunipola
9. Dickson
10. Farrell
11. Yarde
12 Twelvetrees
13. Tomkins
14. Wade
15. Brown

16. Youngs
17. Marler
18. Cole
19. Parling
20. Morgan
21. Youngs
22. Flood
23. Foden

All reports suggest that Ashton will be dropped unless Yarde fails a fitness test.

That's about as happy as I can remember being with an England squad. (Presuming it is the squad.)

My only gripe is that I don't see why we'd pick Farrell amongst a back line which looks like it could do damage. Flood/Burns would get so much more out of it.

Looks to me like there's a better half-back pairing on the bench.

Yarde and Wade look like the most promising England wingers in a while - very pleased to see them start.

15 Mike Brown (Harlequins, 19 caps)
14 Chris Ashton (Saracens, 35 caps)
13 Joel Tomkins (Saracens, 1 cap)
12 Billy Twelvetrees (Gloucester Rugby, 6 caps)
11 Ben Foden (Northampton Saints, 32 caps)
10 Owen Farrell (Saracens, 17 caps)
9 Lee Dickson (Northampton Saints, 10 caps)
1 Joe Marler (Harlequins, 13 caps)
2 Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints, 48 caps)
3 David Wilson (Bath Rugby, 29 caps)
4 Joe Launchbury (London Wasps, 12 caps)
5 Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints, 23 caps)
6 Tom Wood (Northampton Saints, 21 caps)
7 Chris Robshaw (Harlequins, capt, 18 caps)
8 Billy Vunipola (Saracens, 3 caps)
Replacements
16 Tom Youngs (Leicester Tigers, 10 caps
17 Alex Corbisiero (Northampton Saints, 18 caps)
18 Dan Cole (Leicester Tigers, 41 caps)
19 Geoff Parling (Leicester Tigers, 17 caps)
20 Ben Morgan (Gloucester Rugby, 13 caps)
21 Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers, 34 caps)
22 Toby Flood (Leicester Tigers, 58 caps)
23 Alex Goode (Saracens, 11 caps)

No words....

Christian Wade was in contention for a start but his hamstring tightened up in training and unfortunately he hasn't recovered sufficiently in time to be considered for Saturday. Maland Yarde failed a fitness test on a hip injury sustained last weekend this morning so Ben Foden gets his chance with Alex Goode on the bench.
Dylan gets a deserved chance at hooker with Tom Youngs on the bench after the safe arrival of his first child this morning. Rob Webber remains on standby.

Wade and Yarde failed fitness tests this morning; that's why they're out.

Why is Corbs not straight back in the team? If he's not fit he should not be on the bench.

Goode... a plague on the house of Lancaster. The personification of all that is **** about England's backs.

So we choose Foden, Ashton, and Goode over Wade? I give up. Apparently being the last season's joint top try-scorer and second highest try-scorer so far this season isn't good enough for a wing. Being a fullback is though.

Three fullbacks!? What ****ing for!? We only need two in the EPS for God's sake. We could have put out some backs with some attacking threat, but instead we'll sit and butcher the three opportunities we make and wonder why the crap players keep playing crap.

England by a multiple of three... if we're lucky.

****ing Goode...

---

EDIT: Oh, he's injured. Change Wade for any other winger in the English game. If Lancaster was worried about injuries (he mentioned Yarde earlier in the week) why didn't he call up some Saxons wingers?

Ok... So I was in the process of exploding with anger over this team announcement:

1) Using Foden on wing
2) No Wade or Yarde
3) Goode in squad
4) Marler starting

Until I saw about the failed fitness tests... So I guess there's actually very little to say. Except that I'm disappointed to see us fielding another poor back-line, even if it was out of Lancaster's hands to an extent.

Marler starting isn't that big an issue for me.
Corbs hasn't been as dominant as he was under the old rules IMO and Joe is, as ever, improving consistently.
That may yet change though.

Would much rather have had Eastmond in the 23 shirt to cover wing, as it's extremely unlikely that both Brown and Foden would be injured.
Then you also have centre coverage too.

Oh my Lord, THIS!!! It's been this way for years!! This really does sum up post 2003 England. World cup Quarter final 2007 (single tear down the cheek), Ireland 2008 6n, France 2009 6n, Australia 2010 tour + Autumn, All Blacks 2012 - It's all been when they've taken such a shafting in the media! We should viciously beat them like dogs constantly. 'Beat the All blacks? Why didn't you get another try? You're sh**' 'Won the grand slam? Wales have been doing that for years you ba******'

Haha! Well kinda. :) I do hate it that we seem to have to play "special" rugby and get absolutely panned for it before there's enough fire in the belly to let rip. You just don't see that lack of intensity with the Kiwis. England do play better with a rocket up their backsides. actually that'll make a good signature... If they start to prove me wrong I'll be well happy.

Fair play, that's the most disappointing squad announcement in a while.

Yes, my totally unbiased opinion is that Flood is waaaay better than Farrell and that all the Saracens fans are incapable of leaving their club allegiances at the door when discussing England selections. Actually they should not be listened to. At all. Ever. UNLESS.... they put on some fluffy tiger ears and put their hand up and wait for someone to acknowledge them. :)

Apparently Youngs' wife gave birth this morning, so it seems they're playing it by ear as to whether Webber will be on the bench.

Wow. I feel like a deflated balloon. I know this is largely forced by injury but wow, how very disappointing. The only positive is Wilson starting.

Also, we are now well and truly boned for the New Zealand game.

I bet he brings Goode on at Fly-Half and Flood on at centre. I am seriously starting to loose my faith in Lancaster here.

Why Goode? Why?

This. New Zealand are going to kick six shades of **** out of us, after what we did to them last year. I genuinely think the only possible way might be to pack the field with the fatties and ball carriers - Vunipola's, maybe even Billy at 6 and Morgan at 8! Just bull-doze the ********!

Anyway, I despair over Goode because Elliott Daly is better in every single way. Even returning from a long injury he's in top shape. And Jeremy Guscott recently said that Goode is the most skillful full-back England have - WHAT!?

Just been watching SSN and apparently Corbs has not taken part in a full training session this week, so it makes sense just to start him from the bench.

Pity Wade and Yarde are out. Wade felt tightness in his hamstring on Tuesday and did not even take a fitness test this morning; only Yarde did and of course failed it.

Exactly. Daly has been the main reason Wasps have started to look less lost in attack over recent weeks. If Yarde was carrying an injur why not call up Daly? In fact, Watson trained with the EPS as part of the policy of introducing young players to the senior environment, why not bench him as a wing/full back cover?

Seems to me that while Lancaster is all for getting younger or less experienced talent involved in the 'environment' he can't bring himself to fully commit to them unless he is forced to.
