England v Japan - 24/11/2024 (16.10)

SB's reported as saying "We anticipate a tough challenge…..Japan are a dangerous team, so it's important we execute our gameplan and maintain focus throughout the full 80 minutes".

What you actually mean Steve is that given Japan's last few performances against semi decent opponents anything less than a stylish 35+ points win will be unacceptable. By picking what's largely his first choice he's actually just ramped up the pressure on himself.

While we ought to win easily it wouldn't surprise me to see a repeat of the 2018 shambles either. Who would be the 2024 villains to supersede Mercer and Lozowski?

Disappointing, but unsurprising. Sign of a desperate coach under pressure. Reminds me of under Jones when we barely tried anyone against weaker opponents.

i guess we'll not be seeing Ted HIll in an England squad again then.
Why do you say that? He was always an outside shot for being selected given he wasn't in the original squad.

Absolutely, but with no Chessum, Curry really needing a rest and playing against these, it was the perfect time to see how he goes, with CCS off the bench if it doesnt go well.

Just makes me think hes really on the outer and once players come back etc he'll not be fancied.

Fair enough. I love Tom Curry but I wish we'd just leave him to recover from his hip surgery let alone this latest head knock!

We beat Japan 52-17 away, so reality is that anything less than that means either we've regressed or made less improvement than Japan.

I get what you're saying, but I'm not sure it's simple as that.

That's a bit like saying NZ best Ireland by more points than they beat us by so we must be better than Ireland. Different days, very different conditions, different stage of the season, different lineups … just too many variables to make that kind of comparison.

Agree with your point although I reckon England as they played NZ beat us this autumn so far tbf.

We're likely in a trough however, tough to tell where ye are.

Weather's going to be absolutely rotten tomorrow, it's up the jumper stuff

Possibly, but on the other hand if England want to say they've made progress they need something at least similar while looking good in attack and defence.

I am very disapointed, but not surprised at that team. A chance in a meaningless game to actually see how untested options go? No, lets go underhill cury. Let curry get back to his best at club level not risking him in a rubber.

Wouldnt blame ted hill if he went to france tbh, kid has killed it for years and gets messed around at every turn. Props on the bench are atleast interesting, maybe finn smith will get 5 mins at the end.

Danny care said he didnt think willis would get into englands team if available, as he isnt a borthwick type of player, he was trying to frame it as if he wasnt an upgrade, but he might actually be right, plenty of talented players get overlooked.

It should be. Time to move on.

Memories fade quickly, but for quite a while he was a very high quality player. The game's now moved on, but overall a very good career.
Agree, exceptional player and person, clearly the best prop we had for a period there and sadly scapegoated, good on the initial comeback but he has lost it for international level now.
