England 6N 2016 - General Chit Chat

Use the other thread for this topic - there's no need for it to sprawl over two.

As a point of reference*, last season's penalty stats

9 to France's 11, 10 to Scotland's 8, 13 to Ireland's 8, 7 to Italy's 10, 9 against Wales' 9. We have already given up 3 more penalties this year despite having a game to play.

Break down by player

7 - Haskell*
5 - Cole
4 - Billy
3 - Hartley, Marler, Burrell, T Youngs
2 - Haskell, Mako, Attwood, Croft, Robshaw, Brookes, Ford, Easter
1 - May, Watson, Lawes, Parling

Note - stats may be a bit inaccurate, the 6N site and ESPN both fail to say who gave all the penalties for the Wales match, 6N site fail to say for the Italy match.

Looks pretty fair to single out Haskell and Cole as the main menaces to society.

Johnmac - We won - but is that us improving our performance levels on last year, or other teams dropping theirs? Would our current performance level beat Australia away?

For me, discipline is very clearly something we could do better.

Would our current performance level beat Australia away ?
This may provide a clue !

David Pocock has recommitted to the Brumbies and Wallabies until at least the 2019 World Cup.

It's difficult to say . Dare I say it without jinxing us but this England team has been under pressure for 15 minutes of the whole 6N campaign (10 vs Wales at the end and 5 vs Ireland after Haskells yellow) they could respond well to it but they might not . Only time will tell

I'm bored so....

The three things I'd say to that

- An awful lot of coaches seem to be going to their damn'est to ensure there are no decisions, only the instructions. They'd remove the players' brains and replace them with software programs if they could. No one ever got dropped for following instructions, but decisions? Not saying Jones is that sort of coach, this is more of a general point - but then, I'm not saying he isn't. He does have a reputation as a micro-manager for what it's worth.

- In an ideal world though, these things *are* player decisions - just the players collectively made the decision on how to respond to certain scenarios collectively in a calm environment, rather than when stressed and tired as individuals. Which I think is a lot better. It's, say, the difference between discussing what car you want with your wife at home, and getting in a row at the car dealership while the salesman tries to sucker you into a bad deal.

- Obviously you can't cover everything, but perfection is worth aiming for, even if you can't get there. They should certainly be doing the major scenarios and I'd argue defending a 5m scrum/lineout when on a final warning from the ref is one of the major scenarios.

There's still individual decisions to be taken at the time, but every sensible team's looking to reduce the number of them taken, and in most cases the individual decision is on how to pursue a particular goal, rather than what goal to pursue (i.e. how to prevent the maul getting from across the line at all costs, rather than should I be trying to prevent the maul from getting across the line at all times).

I make these points more as academic points on the issue rather than arguments, as we seem mainly in agreement on the specific situation.

We now return to your daily schedule of laughing at Haskell.

All good points.

Always nice to end a discussion with broad agreement rather than one calling the other a stupid ****.

A pleasure agreeing with you, sir.

Now let's get back to calling Haskell a stupid ****.

SCW on this weekend match and EJ.....

"It’s a big day for Eddie as well. He will want to add to his cv. Australia under him lost the 2003 World Cup and soon after he lost his job.

Japan were great, we loved them, but they didn’t reach the quarter-finals of the last World Cup as he wanted. He was an assistant to Jake White at the 2007 World Cup when South Africa won, but that won’t have felt quite the same. In Paris he can be the main man."

My thoughts exactly!!

Would we beat Australia away right now? No. We are not clinical enough when in the 22 and we take 3 points when we should be pushing for 7. An above poster made a long comment but I agree with the jist of it. Decision making is key. Those players are on the field, and they have to be held accountable for the decisions they make. For all the domination England had against wales, we only scored 1 try. Not good enough. We have shown spells of brilliant attacking rugby, with quick ball and good lines. Final decisions (such as Brown not going for the corner) are letting us down.

If we went to Australia today, I would expect a similar score line to the WC game.

Everything's perfect. Haskell will be dropped. Thread close please.

I don't think either will, and I don't think Brown should.

His limitations are really starting to show. Ball in one hand and poor decisions making in attack. Also a slow back 3 with him and Nowell. I think that watsons ability in the air has come on a lot and he should be moved back.

It's difficult to drop Brown, because he's done some really good things for England, but as above - his limitations are really obvious now that the rest of the team is actually playing some rugby.
