Why is there a sole focus on the bloody world cup!!!!

Try to win every series / competition you go in for and evolve as you go...The world cup will take care of itself.

Personally, i WANT to see us doing well in each 6n, Autumn International etc...not coming 5th because hes "trialing new tactics" for the world cup 2 years down the line.

The world cup is great every 4 years...but the 6n is an amazing tournament every year...the AIs are great series.

Fans are losing interest in England because of the dire rugby thats been played for years now, and 5th place finishes ...all because he's focused on the world cup. Its a croc.

I really think post WC we will see a pretty big turn over in the squad and the new coach will get rid of Mako, George, Lawes, Billy, Youngs, Faz, Manu Nowell, May and prob a few more. Out of them only 2 are still performing well enough to still be here IMO, Faz is at club level at 10 which obv means he is good enough to be an international 12....

But thats not the right answer either. We need Evolution...not revolution.

If players are a good part of the squad then keep them...and slowly build for each upcoming competition.

If the older guys are performing better than the new kids on the block then you cant get rid of them...the new kids have to improve their performances to take the shirt off them.

Its a balance...one that NZ and SA generally have perfectly. They both strive for the world cup...but they dont lose focus on the next upcoming competition or sacrifice it for the sake of building for the World Cup.

Yeah, I'm all for the RWC being the main focus but that should be a peak not an ignore-everything-else (which i don't think is the case as over the course of EJs reign we've had some very good results between RWCs)

It's concerning that that's the excuse this close to a RWC though - we should be building to peak at the RWC atm, not still faffing around with combinations and tactics.
6N will be a better indicator, though

TBH this is probably just down to EJ's media tactics - whenever we have a poor game he is always front and centre in the press talking as much as possible. Whether or not the result lays solely at his feet is another matter, but he clearly does it to take all the pressure off of the players
How many headlines are pointing out the captain throwing a 7pt intercept pass in a 1pt game? How many are pointing out the debutant gave away two really soft kickable penalties in a 1pt game?
With the way the British press is it's a good move from EJ and the players probably appreciate him for it.

I agree its not the right answer but it may have to happen. Right now the world cup is the focus, weve stuck alot with these players at the expense of others and doubt some players like youngs will be dropped so to get us back on track to build and evolve post WC.

We just dont have a settled team at all which is important, we could struggle this WC.

I guess you could also argue that Coles shouldn't have been starting anyhow and also that Farrell shouldn't be at 12 where is doesn't thrive under the pressure there. So both player faults really caused by Jones selection.

The press do go after jones pretty hard but maybe because he talks rubbish most of the time and keeps doing stupid selections or tactics.

Fair.

Individual mistakes happen and no boss should publicly hang out individuals to dry.

The reason why he takes the flak isn't really results (although always a factor). It's much more around the team having no cohesion or shape, seemingly irrational selections and the fact that players seem inhibited in the shirt.

If all that was remedied and we lose then it's hats off to the oppo for being better. What really grates with most of us is that we always seem as a team to be less than the sum of our constituent parts.

No arguments with that at all, I just meant to take any excuses he comes up with in the press with a pinch of salt as it's likely just for the sake of the press

I guess if we just focused on either just winning the six nations or beating one nation in particular we'd be Wales.

Reading this interview (BBC Sport) with Mercer, was confidence building to see he is very focussed on playing for England and was actually asked to tour too. Sounds like there is good and regular contact there.

"I speak to Eddie a fair bit. He came to one game out here and I also met him in Aix-en-Provence during the European Cup weekend in May," added Mercer.

"He wanted me to come back to England there and then, and go on tour to Australia. I said I would love to, but that I had a job to do at Montpellier.

"I think he respected that decision. Ultimately I probably speak to [England forwards coach] Richard Cockerill, who looks after the back row playing group, the most.

"I probably speak to him once a week to touch base.

"I am not naive to say I will walk straight in there - there are going to be Autumn internationals, Six Nations, World Cup training camps that I am going to miss with my contract situation - but if I get an opportunity to go into camp I will definitely take it."

O'Gara signalling interest in the England job.

Saying that it shouldn't take too long for quality players like Smith and Farrell to gel and partly pointing finger at slow ball. In the same breath also saying that a lot of 12s now are more power runners and that he prefers 2 playmakers only for the last half hour i.e Smith to bench.

I think if Mercer is in contention, we dump Billy V entirely and look at an 8 of Mercer/Dombrandt/Simmonds depending on who performs the best / works with the team structure. Billy V has too little to offer now whilst I've rated Mercer's attitude all the way from U20's to present. That's exactly the sort of lead by example we need on the field. Even in dogshit Bath, he stood out for his effort and drive. Billy V on the other hand looks completely disinterested.

Post world cup and hopefully with no injuries, we could have one hell of a back row.

I wondered if Mercer would actually fit Eddie's preferred style of 6. Maybe he fits the type of lock/hybrid shape and style, but without having to actually be a lock too.

Decided post WC id like to see this team be developed, not sure why i made it just bored but still i think its will be a very strong balanced squad.

Genge LCD Sinks
Itoje Tizard
Willis Mercer Curry
JVP MSmith
Anyanwu Lawrence
Murley Steward Freeman

George(Not sure who id replace him with tbh)
Rodd
Hayes
Coles
Dombrandt
Quirke
FSmith
Arundell

Not a lot to complain about there, it would just need a coaching setup to fully utilise it.
