A Political Thread pt. 2

only one more week of college football with political attack ads. I have a nice little weekend trip planned so hopefully I'll avoid it.

"A £70bn a year rise in spending - so 2% of GDP - raising the size of the state closer to European levels.

It is half funded by one of the biggest tax raising budgets outside of a recession, and half from a significant increase in borrowing."

I think we can say its not an austerity budget.

Hopefully this turns out to be a worst case scenario and not reality, like the bus fare cap, but doesn't seem like it

Public transport in this country is a ******* joke - 4.6% rise for what? My local line still hasn't put back the trains they cancelled during COVID

Can see the point in the article they should be encouraging people to use trains more not less. The freeze on fuel duty isn't getting people out there cars.

I'm still surprised they reached a deal with Aslef with no modernisation or reforms. I do get the strikes were hurting the economy.

Just seems like increased fares, same rubbish service.

Seems like a vicious circle to me. The more expensive and **** public transport is the less people use it which just reduces revenue and pushes up prices further. I supported public transport workers getting a fair pay deal but would like to have seen an agreement on reform and service level improvement.

How hard can it be to look a similar countries that have good PT systems and learn from it.

I imagine if Labour are going to try and fix public transport it won't be until after the economy is stronger. At this stage, really the only way the government can sort out the trains is to renationalise them. They are never going to solve it through privatisation. However, to do that the economy needs to be stronger.

Badenoch new Tory leader. Looks like the Tories are going to go after Reform and lurch further to the right. I imagine the centrists in the party will do what Cleverly has done and stay on the back benches and wait, rather than trying to break away. No one wants to give up the name.

Well...

Once upon a time there were The Whigs, then the Liberal Party, then the Liberal Unionist Party and eventually the Conservative Party.

Strangely enough, the opponents of The Whigs were The Tories, which then eventually merged with the Conservative Party.

Therefore, they could claim the name of "The Tories" and not step far away from their roots.

It's not the name so much, as the party machinery.
Donations, volunteers, local level councillors, rules & ref.s etc

I read party membership is at an all time low, or very near it.

If MPs are feeling disenfranchised, I'd imagine the silent majority feel completely displaced* (and have been dropping off the radar throughout the Boris/Truss/Sunak era).

*unless the bulk of tory supporters are mindless xenophobic idiots.

Worth it for the tourists who'd go to London anyway though I'm sure.

Can't say I'm massively surprised, did you know that they illegally acquired, and still own part of, my country?
So annoying the tourist argument (I know you are taking the ****)

This idea that tourists will stop going to the UK if we got rid of them is ridiculous. People don't not go to France on holiday because they've not got a monarchy anymore. It's stupid imo.

Bit of an update on the recent Israeli attacks on Iran. Looks like they took out the remaining Iranian long range SAM systems and the fuel mixers for their solid fuel missile systems so in one night they have left Iran almost defenceless to air attack and without any capability to manufacture the weapon systems it's been giving to Hezbollah, the Huthies and what they have been themselves firing at Israel.

I really don't agree with what Israel are doing in Gaza but you have to hand it to them when they need to get military **** done they really do it.
