A Political Thread pt. 2

Just a thanks for the Ukraine updates guys its getting very lost in British media.
Yup, just when we most want updates from trusted sources with good fact checkers - they're all too busy with other things.

Like arresting republicans (though, TBF, most of the media are completely ignoring this - and plenty of other examples)

Seems like the UK bank holiday on Monday 19th September for the Queen's funeral is going to cause a storm.

Caller on LBC claimed her mother's funeral has been cancelled and that she was told all crematoriums are closed.

Whilst I get why yeah there's a huge amount of knock on effects from it. It costs the country billions.

Yeah not good stuff...

Idiot who is doing very little for the cause but this shouldn't be the response to it by any measure.

Still can't believe how precious some people are about swearing as well.

Yup, it's tactless, and I don't support the actions - but arrest is massively OTT and an abuse of power.

But then, they brought in a law to silence Steve Bray - and this is exactly the sort of thing they wanted to stop - and it's an abuse of power.

I'd really like to know which specific criminal offence she has committed? A public order offence presumably which could incite violence. Hatred speech?

Surely you can't be arrested for that. It's not section 5 public order act or whatever and it's not hate speech. Would have to see the entire details until passing judgement.

Yeah, It's the one thing I'm envious of America on and one way they certainly are more "free" than us. Your average American probably thinks our hate speech laws are wild. This is political free speech though. Start attacking that and you're on a slippery slope. Sad times.

Randy Andy just copped some unambiguous 'negative feedback' from someone in the crowd on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

While he likely deserves such comments, there is a time and a place. Making fun online is one thing but heckling at a funeral procession is just out of order. Even if he thought Andrew deserved it, the others don't. I'm not in favour of the royal family at all but they are still human and these people have still lost their mother.

America? Isn't there a law in Florida where you are not allowed to use the term gay when refering to single sex couples?

Mmmmmm, not sure. Political free speech is protected under the constitution. I don't think you'd get arrested for holding a sign with a political comment even with a swear word or 2. Pretty sure you can say "**** the police" to police officers and not get arrested. Over here you just have to fart near a copper and you'll get arrested under section 5.

It's beyond a joke if that report about the person being arrested is true. Crazy.

Hard to comment without knowing the facts and you're of course right that we should be respectful and all that but if it's just a case of protesting/holding a sign on public property it shouldn't matter where it is and who's feelings you're going to hurt, that is not a basis for which someone should be arrested. Tasteless and crass, yes, but you shouldn't be arrested.

Interesting. Not heard of that. I'll read later but first paragraph outlines how it's not quite the same thing that I was talking about as it appears this specifically relates to education in young children. Don't get me wrong, doesn't sound great at a cursory glance but a bit different, plus I'm assuming this is just one state?

While all free speech is of course important there's something about censoring political free speech via the police that is very concerning. Mind you, I'd be concerned if I was sending my children to school and they weren't allowed to learn about people with different sexual orientations.

Here it's political over there its down to religion

Yeah agree. Religion is a much bigger driver over there than it is here. I feel, on the whole, with regards to free speech, they have it better than us, though. But I've never lived in America and I'm certainly no constitutional expert so happy to be corrected by any of our resident Americans.
