A Political Thread pt. 2

Britain isn't remotely involved in the Ukrainian war any more than in any other war where British arm sales have been made to one of the sides. Every nation is still having elections. Hungary just had one (of sorts), France is having one currently. If, as is entirely possible, the Ukrainian war goes on for years, do the Tories suspend the next election?

Britain plumbs new depths by the week and it is potentially very dangerous when combined with the lack of constitution.

In other war news there are signs the Saudi/Iran proxy war in Yemen may finally, after 8 miserable years, be thinking about drawing to a close. It seems Iran bombing Saudi Arabia just before the Grand Prix has focussed a few minds amongst the Saudis. It is one thing to have a scorched earth policy in someone's elses territory, but when it hits your own backyard suddenly you don't think it is quite such a jolly idea.

So Sunak has supposedly paid the fine but made no statement. That's umm interesting from a political point of view.

Not from a moral one.

Even the Daily Fail readership are turning on Johnson. Only the most ardently partisan hacks still make excuses for this.

Apparently the fine is more likely to be between £60 to £200 each for Boris and Rishi or more if more fines were imposed on Boris. But of course, it's not the amounts but rather that they both broke the law and lied to Parliament. Staying would just be corrosive.

Yeah it's fundamental question of why should we obey any law they set.

I recall people saying the birthday cake one was the least offensive party. How the hell are there no fixed penalties for the Downing St flat party to celebrate Cummings departure and the cheese and wine. Surely there are more fixed penalties to come. I also recall people saying Sunak happened to walk into the cabinet office while birthday cake was being eaten and was fairly innocent in it but who TF knows.

Happening in order of reporting (or some other order) so more to come.

Didn't matter why people were there for the public - just being there at all is enough

I don't think there's a reason for the ordering but they are doing it event by event there are another 5 Johnson is associated with. It will be continuous shitstorms for weeks.

Well from Johnson's statement it seems that his one is for the birthday cake one. So yes there could be more.

Wasn't the big one for him and Carrie Johnson the meal they had in their flat in Downing Street as that certainly wasn't work related and wasn't a spur of the moment event that he wasn't expecting.

Winder at the next PMQs how many will do a Blackford.

I think some MPs should just outright stand up and call him a liar. The rules are absurd if he can lie in the Commons without consequence but to point out he is doing it is punished. You cannot have a "gentlemans agreement" with a lying scumbag like Johnson. Every MP who has a question should stand up and outright say Johnson is a liar. I think the farce of kicking a load of MPs out for speaking the truth whilst Johnson is allowed to continue lying will make people even more ****** off the with government.

It won't happen but it would be the stunt to end all stunts. I'd love to see that level coordinated effort on the opposition benches.

I'm not a fan of that sort of thing but I do think a protest of that order is called for.

I'd love to see a reporter ask him how it feels to be a lying hypocrite who has less morals than a seven year old about how to celebrate their birthday during a national emergency.

Pretty much what drove me to the LD's in the early 2000's (that and being born in Ashdown's constituency where Labour were a non entity).

Daily Heil, so pinch of salt etc. but a meaty headline

Rishi Sunak 'had to be talked out of resigning over Partygate penalty because it would have pressured PM do the same' - while Sue Gray report on scandal 'will be published next week and will NOT make comfortable reading' amid fears of MORE fines for Boris

Well, I've written to my MP - it won't make a difference, but if a few hundred of us do, he might decide his future is better served by doing something (actually, he might, he was VERY ****** off with Cummings breaking lockdown rules, but was also very much "let's wait and see what the Met decide" on BJ).

Anyone ****** off about this, really should write to their MP - even non-tory MPs can have their say in Parliament, whilst Labour / LibDem etc can call a motion of no confidence if they refuse to go.

Messrs Johnson and Sunak have now both been found guilty of breaking the law – laws which they made. They have admitted guilt by not appealing, which confirms that they have both lied to parliament.

In any functional democracy, the latter would immediately bar them from parliament, at least until they have corrected the record. The former would automatically bar them from parliament in perpetuity or at least trigger an automatic by-election in their constituencies.

As we don't live in a functional democracy, and the individuals concerned have no capacity to feel shame, or to do the honourable thing, then every conservative MP must write letters to the 1922 committee calling on their resignation.

EVERY conservative MP who chooses not to do this, is choosing to side with criminals and liars, is actively supporting lawlessness, and worse, lawlessness in the House of Commons.

I implore you to write, demanding their resignations, expressing no-confidence in this Prime Minister (and his cabinet); and to support or even propose a motion whereby any law breaking by any MP triggers an by-election in their constituency, preferably with said MP barred from standing.

In the words of Lady Thatcher "The first duty of Government is to uphold the law. If it tries to bob and weave and duck around that duty when it is inconvenient, if government does that, then so will the governed, and then nobody is safe."

I don't see how more fines aren't coming as noted the birthday cake party was the one we had most detail about that could even be considered in a legal grey area. It was deemed not to be, Johnson paid the fine which doesn't mean he officially broke the law but then he admitted it on TV which means he did.

Makes sense about Sunak he waited a **** ton of time to release any statement, my view is he thinks the heat is essentially off him now so he can mount a leadership bid (which is doomed).
