Hogg as captain doesn't strike me as the most thought out choice.

I'd have had Jonny Gray as a better candidate than Hogg.

I'm no fan of the captain having a number above 9, let alone the player that is/should be consistently furthest away from the ref. Weird choice.

I agree ive always said a forward should be captain but unless an exceptional leader i wouldnt have a back 3 captain.

I can see where you're coming from but he's had a stint as co captain before and he just isn't vocal enough nor has natural leadership skills (calling the line out is about his limit). TBH, there is a shortage of obvious candidates now Barclay and Laidlaw have retired from international duty, Grant Gilchrist is probably the most natural leader but isn't a nailed on starter.

I would imagine Hoggs appointment will be in tandem with a lieutenant in the forwards also, Scotland really need someone in the forwards to look to for direction. J Gray had a good crack at it a few 6N's ago but hasn't really shown the same since. Captains are usually best from hooker or second and back row or SH IMO. Right now a calm head would be enough!

Finn Russell has left the Scotland camp for unspecified reasons - could miss the whole tournament.

Oooffttt.

So is the loss of Russell balanced out by the "loss" of Laidlaw?

Unlikely - Adam Hastings is still too hot and cold.

I guess it could be legit personal reasons, but the report reads like its some kind of bust up. I reckon he's discovered an English grandparent....

STATEMENT | Scotland team spokesperson: "Stand-off Finn Russell will play no further part in preparations for Scotland's Six Nations opener against Ireland, having been disciplined for a breach of team protocol during the week's camp in Edinburgh. He has returned to his club."

Totally without anything to back it up but I just have a feeling he's rocked up and tried to head coach the whole squad... Toonie probably put up with it for about a day or two out of necessity but couldn't take it anymore.

Heard all about what Wilson did to annoy the English... I'm guessing Hogg was part of that too?
