[2014 EOYT] England v Australia

Off topic

Taking advantage of many Englishmen in this thread.

What does mean "Poms"? And why Aussies and Kiwis use that nickname for you?

Yeah yeah whatever blah blah blah English club rugby, yaaaawn, how about telling us if you can beat the convicts or not this weekend because a loss against Aussie would represent a monumental step backwards for team England.

Comes from the days when we used to send our prisoners down under. Started out as "pohm" and meant "Prisoner of His Majesty" and was what new prisoners had on their clothes when they arrived in Australia.

Now it's just a xenophobic term meant to cause offence, but really just makes the user look like a dick. Like if people constantly referred to the French as "frogs" or the Irish as "micks" etc.

You learn something new everyday. I just had it down as some ancient comment that become quite xenophobic over time. Doesn't bother me though.

Pretty sure that no-one quite knows what it actually means. Several theories but nothing concrete.

Thanks for the info. But if the word means: "Prisoner of His Majesty", they are also prisoners of his majesty IMO :p

aye, also heard it as short for pomegranate as that's what they used to eat on the way over it's a fruit that keeps at sea.

Ton's of different things it could be.

it wouldn't be ideal, but it wouldn't be as big a deal as people are making out.

I heard that it was supposed to stand for "Prisoner Of Motherland" - as in, Australia's so great actually we're the lucky ones, you guys are "imprisoned" in grey, miserable Britain.

Like ratsapprentice says, I think no-one really knows, kinda like "chav". It's not that offensive a name though, I certainly wouldn't get offended by it.

Absolutely, why not start Stringer at 9 and drop Brown for Watson, I suppose we could leave May in there, but why not bring Banahan or Woodburn in on the wing? In fact, why not replace Lancaster with Mike Ford and throw Henson in as Mascot for good measure....

Very funny. Are you going to seriously argue that Ford and Eastmond have made England worse or that they aren't good together at club level? I think JJ deserves a go because Bath do have one of the best partnerships at 10, 12 and 13. If that could be transplanted into the England squad, we could see our backs being utilised much better. Roko hasn't really done anything wrong in his short time with England and has also been performing very well at club level. I'm not saying it will be the best England can put out but I think it's worth a try. It's not like that lot could be less creative and less able to bring in the backs than the current setup.

I think what he's saying is that club centric backlines have seldom worked well for England.

Not saying the Ford/East/Joseph combo won't work but as we've seen on many an occasion a strong domestic 10/12/13 combo/Backline doesn't always translate - you'd hope it's the best from everywhere and the coaches can pull players up tot eh level they need them at.

probably all the other idle trolls/WUMs that seem to have popped up over the last couple of months... just use the block button, it can really make a difference.

I literally did not know you could block people...!
Do their posts just not appear?

They don't appear in the new post feed; there is a small post notifying you that there someone you have blocked has posted in the thread, offering you the choice to see it if you want.

kind of happy this is the last game of the season. i'm a little over it. hopefully the dressing room gets hosed out with a firehose after the game and all the crap gets washed away, flight home and start from scratch. it's been a horror year for us and I wouldn't be surprised if England beat us convincingly.

as for the nickname POM, there is no offensive connotation whatsoever. We have a nickname for almost anything in Australia including ourselves.
england = poms ireland = the paddies nz = kiwis french = frogs italians/greeks = ****. although **** was once offensive it's now used as a term of pride by those from that descent ie. "we're **** and proud"
aussies with a UK background even refer to themselves as "skips" "can eaters" etc.

however when English refer to us as "the convicts" I find it offensive, i'm not from a UK background, none of my ancestors are criminals and they all came to our fine country to seek a better life.

Yes, that would be me - not that I need to justify giving rep, but I gave it because he was trying to keep a thread on track.

Can I just ask what business it is of yours, or what it's got to do with the Australia V England match? ... Rhetorical questions obviously as it's neither your business, nor is it relevant to the thread
@goodNumber10 - no, not given by a WUM of a Troll, although it does seem that if you disagree with an opinion or the ability of certain players that are the favourites of certain other posters, you can certainly be labelled that way.

If we are concerned (collectively) about the quality of posts/posters, maybe look at who doesn't post anymore, and look to the quality of our own posts.

If anyone has a problem with any of the above, feel free to PM me, as I don't want this thread to derail further

As to the topic at hand, I think England can probably smell blood in the water, and will take this one, adding to Australia's misery

lol how can W0GS be offensive?

It must have different connotations on your side of the globe, but it very much has negative/racist on this side.

Anywho, let's try and get this fully back on track.

England side (or at least the 1-23 order of the 23 players) announced later on today - fully expecting Wood and 36 to start, and no other changes.
