[2013 TRC] New Zealand vs South Africa in Auckland (14/09/2013)

Fantastic play! Superb teams!
Awful, awful poster. Embarrassing for SA to have a poster like this on this forum.
Shocker

Great comment by Ian Jones when you play on the edge of physicality sometimes you come out on the wrong side of the Refree.

Tackle by Bismark was absolutely fantastic. Only game I've watched where result clearly fixed.
Well played SA.
Lost much respect for All Blacks tonight.

Lost no respect for the ABs, or for SA. Mistakes on both side, brilliance on both sides. In the end the score reflects which team just pulled together the best. NZ could have foundered early on when they lost Carter - it could have had a psychological impact - but they didn't let that stop their determination. I think that's why the ABs do so well - they are not about just one or two players, but about the team. That's why stuff like Nonu's dyckish moves don't end up costing them more games. It's not about bad referee calls either, because if the ABs relied on stuff like that then the score would have been off the charts. But the Boks also pulled together and didn't let the ABs trampled over them. Sure, they lost, but they certainly could have lost by a lot more had they let a couple bad decisions get the better of them.

Have to say the game probably would have gone down to the wire if SA had to play with only 14 men for 10 mins rather than 50 ought mins. Sucks that the game got ruined by that one call.

Anyone know what was the reason behind Read's yellow? Don't think they talked about it or showed any replays but might have missed it.

And Nonu is an absolute twit. Shame that our depth for No. 12 sucks atm.

This would have been the game of the year if Roman Poite had'nt destroyed it as a contest. He is normally a good referee, but he made many incorrect decisions today, that had a peculiarly one-sided effect on the game. And this was not limited to the incorrect red card decision on du Plessis. He confused the old scrummaging laws with the new, and mis-applied the blocking and free kick laws. He ignored AB professional fouls within 10 m of the AB try line.

Lets hope that the return game is refereed more evenly and more competently that this one.

The game would have been a great contest of contrasting styles. The ABs bring remarkable organised intensity, ball-handling and organisation to the game. The SA team are technically inferior, but bring huge physical intensity, and hope to overwhelm the opposition through power play. No-one represents this style more effectively than du Plessis, who was SAs best player today, before being sent off.

Comedy refereeing....
SA very very impressive. Will be interesting to see what happens at Ellis Park, with a referee on the pitch.
Let's see if there are kiwi supporters who are able to be objective on what happened here tonight.

Read's yellow was for pushing the lifter in the lineout. Can't tell whether it was justified since the game was so chaotic at that point, though I have no reason to suspect otherwise.

I believe Read's card was for pushing the lifter in the line out.

I think we've pretty much all being saying all along SA were robbed what forum have you been reading?? I'll say it again though SA isnt smart enough to beat us at home YET.

I agree with you on some points but not the blocking or scrum rulings. There was some straight up bullcrap going on with SA's NFL style blocking for their halfback I counted probably 10 players all in a line going sideways at one box kick in the first half. It was beyond ridiculous.

Only saw second half as I slept through the 1st and agree with most of whats being said. Saw the "no shoulder" hit on Carter and that was plain wrong to penalise it let alone bin him. His other yellow, was a yellow but because of the refs bad call he was gone. That said though, you'd assume BDP knew he was on a yellow so you'd think he'd try to avoid putting himself in a situation where he'd be sent off so you have to lay some of the blame at his door for being sent off.

THIS: It was just a novice mistake by BDP imo and id be suprised if this is the first time he's done something that stupid. He's a great player but not a smart one thats why Smit kept him out of the team for so long....

:D

We need more backline players like Willie Le Roux, this running head first into opposition backline will never work against the All Blacks. Need to lose Pienaar (thank goodness we have FdP for Aus and NZ at home). I think our forward pack is relatively OK. Duane is a beast and Bismarck is invaluable.

Steyn is also not as effective against NZ as he is against AUS/Argentina/NH. But he is the best we have 'till Goosen gets back to prime form and health (and age). Jan Serfontein is an excellent player, but that style is ineffective against the 'Blacks.

We are definitely the second best team in the world, we just need to figure out a way to beat the All Blacks! Our gameplay simply doesn't work vs them.

I heard something during the game...something towards the end about Steyn, I believe. Wish I could remember - I think it was something about him not liking to tackle. Games like this you need players that are willing to do everything it takes to win.

The Boks have a good team. The ABs, however, are just on fire. But they can be brought down and if any team in TRC is going to do it it's the Boks.

Poite gave a penalty to the ABs in the SA 22 during a ruck, when four SA players were STATIONARY on either side of the ruck, and the scrumhalf cleared with a box-kick. This is a mis-interpretation of the blocking law, which specifies deliberate movement on the part of the side in possession to block defender from reaching ball-player and/or ball. Referee gave ABs penalties for SA pushing early into the scrum, and then penalised SA for not "taking the hit" when the ABs pushed early. Inconsistent application of the new scrum laws against the old scrum laws.

He put in a good tackle near the end, and the ref mentioned it saying: "He doesn't usually like to tackle".

Thing about Morne is, when the whole team is playing well, he'll be playing well. But if the competition is even a little bit intense, he struggles. He shines and looks good when we absolutely decimate the other team, yes. But in a match like tonight he looks average. But like I said, for now he is our best option. Goosen is injured and very inexperienced and I doubt that Meyer will ever play Lambie (who is also average).

I assume it was the commentator, not the ref, who mentioned Steyn's tackling habits. :)
I agree that Steyn can't win a game on his own, but the same can be said of almost any flyhalf - their performance tend to reflect how well other players are doing.
