Wales v England

Clontarf is a nice place, have a good few mates from out there. Drico's part of the world.

Its also the site of argueably the most damaging battle in Irish history ...as well as some good rugby :p

WEST: "NO, YOU!"

DORIAN WEST says he was hurt by Warren Gatland's jibe at Saints captain Dylan Hartley, but believes it will come back to haunt him if Wales lose to England.
Gatland fired an astonishing broadside at Hartley in the build up to next week's Six Nations opener at the Millennium Stadium.
In a clear attempt to antagonise Hartley, Gatland accused him of getting Richie Rees banned for the whole Six Nations, of his lineout throwing imploding under pressure and of chickening out of a fight with Cardiff Blues hooker Gareth Williams.
Saints forwards coach West was taken aback by the comments, but says it won't disturb Hartley and is predicting it will only inspire the England hooker.
West said: "Somebody saying something like that will hurt Dylan a little bit - it hurt me listening to it, I thought it was bad.
"Dylan has matured and he has got a lot of good people around him in that England camp, who will be taking the positives out of what Warren Gatland said about him and I think you will see a response."
England have not won in Wales since the World Cup winning year of 2003, which was the last time the Red Rose side won the Six Nations.
But West feels Gatland's comments will be used to motivate not just Hartley, but England as well.
Gatland has not overseen a win for Wales for seven Tests, which included a shambolic draw against Fiji, so defeat on home soil will only intensify the examination of his position.

Warren "I've banned myself from press releases" Gatland with another tactical quote:

Warren Gatland has revealed he was approached by the Rugby Football Union twice before taking charge of Wales.
The former Ireland and Wasps boss claims he met a head-hunter in 2006 about the job that eventually went to Rob Andrew, and was again contacted during the 2007 World Cup campaign.
Gatland's comments provide yet another intriguing sub-plot ahead of next Friday's opening RBS Six Nations clash between Wales and England at the Millennium Stadium.
"I flew to Sydney to meet the head-hunter," Gatland told The Guardian. "He told me about the job but I said I preferred hands-on coaching and that I was not ready for an administrative role.
"The RFU called back again and said I could turn the role into whatever I wanted.
"It turned out I was offered the job that came to be taken by Rob Andrew."
Gatland said he was contacted again, this time about the coach's job, after England made a dreadful start to the 2007 Rugby World Cup with a 36-0 pool defeat to South Africa.
"A couple of agents called me directly. They said Rob Andrew would like to call me and I said that would be no problem.
"He never rang and I don't know if that was because he did not want to or because he was hamstrung at the time," Gatland said.
England rallied in the latter stages of the World Cup, beating France and Australia to reach the final where they lost again to the Springboks.

Has the game finished yet?

until a few generations back yeah.

Ah I see I can claim no Royal blood on my Irish side :/ French side however have links to Charlemange :p

And just so this is mildly on track I am under the Impression that england might nick this one .. They are playing good rugby at the moment and the welsh seem to be in a bit of a slump.

Cannot wait for this one, think this could be the match of the championship straight off. Think we will win due to our supirior, albeit just, backline and a pack that whilst not being at full strength wont get dominated. Im nervous already and theres a week to go yet

These three guys want a word with you:

England should win... we're a better side. Wales have a few great players who are a little over the hill, a few prospects who could be great but aren't yet, and not too much quality in between.

Having said that, it's in Cardiff, this England side is fickle, missing its captain and 2 of its best players. I think Wales will win.

The Welsh back 3 man for man are baked on toast. However, Jones-Roberts-Hook has a lot more to it then Flood-Hape-HMS Banahan.

So the Welsh outside backs will actually be given the ball from time to time (but do f-all with it), while the English outside backs will only ever see the ball when it gets kicked to them but actually be effective in return.

Martin Johnson opts for Mike Tindall to captain England

Mike Tindall will captain England next week against Wales - providing he is fit to play.

Martin Johnson was expected to appoint Nick Easter, who has previously done the job, in the absence of injured skipper Lewis Moody.

But the Red Rose boss has sprung a major surprise during this week's training camp in Portugal by turning instead to his former team mate.

His plan hit a hitch when Tindall, who is engaged to marry the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips (below), suffered a thigh injury on Thursday.

England played it down, insisting 'no major damage' had been done and saying they expect the 32-year-old to rejoin the squad this weekend.

However, the fact they flew him home to undergo an MRI scan in London was a clear indicator of how big a part of their plans he is.

Johnson has kept the identity of his stand-in skipper under wraps, fulfilling England's obligation for the captain to attend the tournament launch by sending Moody.

He says he will reveal his choice on Monday, two days before naming his team for Friday's clash at the Millennium Stadium.

Tindall has never previously led England from the start in his 66-cap career though he has served as vice-captain and previously taken over the armband during games.

In the event that the World Cup winner is not fit, Harlequins No.8 Easter will get the job.

With one eye to life without Tindall, the England selectors will keep a close watch on events at Worcester today, where Manu Tuilagi plays his first match in an England shirt at outside-centre against Italy A.

The Samoan-born 19-year-old, who qualifies for England on residency grounds, has made a major impact in his first full season at Leicester.

And England Saxons team mate James Simpson-Daniel believes he can be the long-term successor to Tindall in the No.13 shirt.

The Gloucester star knows all about making a splash for England as a teenager, having run round Jonah Lomu for a stunning try at Twickenham four days before his 20th birthday.

And Simpson-Daniel, who himself harbours ambitions of making England's World Cup squad, reckons the youngest of six Tuilagi brothers has what it takes.

"Manu is potentially the No.13 England have been looking for," he said. "He's young, he's big and he's got a real good skill set. He's definitely one for the future."

Tuilagi narrowly avoided deportation last year after the Home Office ruled he was not allowed to stay as he had entered the country on a six-month holiday visa six years ago.

But he successfully appealed and is now firmly on the Red Rose radar.

"Manu is so physical and so physically big that you have to remind yourself he is still so young," said Simpson-Daniel. "His legs are like tree trunks.

"The more experience he gets the more his confidence will increase. He's going to be quite a handful. He could be the next guy to pull on the shirt."

ENGLAND SAXONS: M Brown (Harlequins); J Simpson-Daniel (Gloucester), M Tuilagi (Leicester), B Twelvetrees (Leicester), U Monye (Harlequins); S Myler (Northampton), R Wigglesworth (Saracens); J Marler (Harlequins), L Mears (Bath), A Corbisiero (London Irish), G Kitchener (Worcester), C Day (Northampton), J Gaskell (Sale), C Robshaw (Harlequins, captain), L Narraway (Gloucester).
