Transfers rumours

I thought the same about Ewers TBH. His contract is up at the end of the season and he doesn't look anywhere near as good as he did before his injury. I wouldn't be massively surprised if his contract isn't renewed given all of the other expensive renewals they have.

The rumour is that Chudley is off to Bath.

Exeter's medical team are better placed than anyone to assess the risk of re-signing Ewers, which combined with forthcoming expenses makes it a possibility, but everything else makes it unlikely IMO. He's a fit for how Exeter play and has been around since academy days.

The Chudley rumour has been very widely reported. IIRC I read someone on the Exeter forum saying that they'd heard it confirmed from the horse's mouth.

Edit: Can anyone explain how much wiggle room within the cap re-signing an academy player brings?

Also, given that Ewers was a Saxon when he signed his last contract and now has injury question marks, his new contract isn't going to represent a quantum leap like Simmonds' will. I understand the thinking that extra cap room may be needed in order for Chiefs to retain some who have kicked on since their last contract negotiation, however anecdotally, Tony Rowe said before Christmas that Chiefs have space within the cap and funds in place to be able to use it. As someone else has already said, I'd have thought that Campagnaro would be more likely to go if an axe needs to swing to find room.

I did think about asking how other teams cope if Exeter are struggling with the cap, but thought it might have got me accused of straying out from under my bridge!
A very large squad with many current and past internationals,
60 players with 21 internationals

Compared to say Quins at 49 players, Bath at 44, Wasps with 41, Gloucester with 39 and Sale with 32

But you're forgetting Exeter chiefs get reparations from all the other Prem clubs due to there cultural history and oppresion.

Interesting point, I hadn't realised that Exeter's squad was so much bigger than their peers. Where are your numbers coming from? Sharks' own website reports just 31 players, while the AP website says 42! I suspect that the waters are being muddied by how academy players are listed, but Exeter still seem on the high end whichever way you cut it.

I'm not sure that number of current or past internationals is indicative of anything much. Current tier 1 internationals certainly is, but plenty of former / tier 2 internationals would surely be worth less to an AP club thanks to them not counting towards EQP quotas and / or the possibility of them getting called up.

I took them all from wikipedia - probably not the most accurate in general, but probably pretty consistent across the teams.

Just noticed that,
They don't say specify who's academy on their website either.

Either way, I think we can all agree we can do away with the notion that Exeter are some poor lowly club who are battling against the big boys with nothing more than a few fisherman and whichever lads aren't working down the pasty mines that day.

10000000000000x this.

Exeter could do with getting replacing their fisherman IT guy though and update their website to something more slick.

Alex Dombrandt (Wales u20) signed for Quins. Never heard of him... any idea how good he is?

In 2017, Jason Strange commented on Alex Dombrandt:

'Alex Dombrandt (Cardiff Met) - This shows we are looking out for people at all levels. You can normally make a judgement whatever level a boy is playing. We brought him into camp and you can see already physically he's there. He's an out-and-out carrier.'

The only other story of note is that Alex was punched by a Glynneath player, whilst playing for Cardiff Met.

An out-and-out carrier is what you're getting!

At 6'4 and 119kg it seems like carrying would be his forte.

Uni rugby isn't much of a yardstick, but this super cut has some good moments from Dombrandt:
